  • This video was made in early 2008, long before every cell phone came with EVDO 3G built-in. Fast-forward 3 yrs, and bandwidth is severely constrained in many areas; thus the 'glory days' of getting 2.5mbps peak downloads are now just a fond memory. Sad, as "mobile broadband" is now down to dial-up speeds for many users.

Bill makes a reference to EVDO speeds "being 20x faster than dial-up", but 480kbps is about 4-5x faster than dial-up (typically 100kbps, on avg; limited to 140kbps, max).

  • Most wireless card internet plans say unlimited, but in the fine print, unlimited is up to 5 gigabytes. Is this plan different.

  • @backwoodstech The alltel / verizon data plan is currently unlimited, but is subject to change.

  • internet anywhere? what about in the ocean? yep not anywhere :P

  • @THEScottishFURY Anywhere there is a cell phone signal. Which would also mean it wouldn't work on the moon.

  • @guerillabill dang't there goes my hopes and dreams

  • is that card working in Europe too?

  • That laptop needs to lose some weight

  • @rickyman1234 That Laptop is Dell Studio XPS, with 3.4ghz intel extreme processor. Very fast and ideal for video editing. That was two years ago. These days I carry a netbook and android phone, and do my video editing on my desktop

  • does it have to be a certain plan? i have month by month wireless charter

  • @ithaley I had the month to month data play with alltel - now Verizon.

  • The title says "Internet anywhere" the later on he shows you where you can get internet on the map, hardly anywhere in the west... make up your mind BILL MYERS!!

  • @littlemacho8 Using this or cell phone tethering, you can get internet anywhere you can get a cell signal.

  • ugh i thought it would be free dammit!!!!! anyone one know a internet thing where u can get any internet conncections

  • @korn11000 If you have an android phone, you can tether to your laptop to get internet

  • do you have to pay per month or once (for the card only)??

  • @MarcVetter You can choose to pay on a month to month basis, or subscribe for multiple years. Or you can just tether you droid phone (if you have one) to your laptop and use that to get internet on the laptop

  • is the unlimited wi-fi still available?

  • @xxloveandconfusionxx When I recorded this 2 years ago, I used alltel as my cell provider. They have since been purchased by Verizon. You'll have to contact them to see if the unlimited data plan is still available.

  • i have an acer

but it sucks its very slow and hardly get good connections

i have installed alot of programs and i think its that

and when i connect to a wifi it say is connected but it dont work

  • Nice Laptop

  • @spanishatown It was a nice laptop. A Dell Studio XPS with quadcore and hyperthreading. But it died last year, and cost more to repair than to replace.

  • @guerillabill

    quad core AND hyper-threading?

    i7?

  • Is this the Bill Myers as in My Life As series?

  • @zeldanerd5 No, not him. I do know him though, and he is a nice guy

  • got alltel today, live out in the country...i though it might be a pretty good service costing 59.99 a month, but speeds are not great for me, want to play xbox live, but not even going to attempt....good for people on the go, not for gaming....maybe better in the city, but idk...usally city has even better ISP's....im getting different ISP, alltel failed me :( waste of time.....

  • you would be better of with a dongle

  • verizon card work much better and faster. it's even cheaper. orr if you live in my area you could buy CriKet and thats cheap to.

  • Bill's on the 3G network.

  • Thank you so much! I like this, its cool to have internet WHEREVER you go!

  • i like this video

  • thx, i never knew about those

  • get verisons phone card better reception

  • Verizon does have wider coverage. Now that Verizon has purchased and manages Alltel, both should do well.

  • Thanks. Very helpful and informative vid.

  • it was helpful thanks for the post.

  • this is cool....of you could use a pda cell phone with a $30 data plan and teather it to your laptop with either a usb cable/bluetooth/or a wifi connection

  • So this can work anywhere even in the desert or jungle or in the middle of nowhere?

  • This works anywhere you can get a cell phone connection. I've used it in the middle of the Florida Everglades.

  • @guerillabill hey man can i use this on macbook pro

  • Yes, they offer a mac version.

  • whats pcmi...?

  • Its the card slot on laptops.

These days I use the USB version of the data card. Works the same way but easier to move from computer to computer

  • He means PCMCIA

  • I am so going to do this, already ordered the inverter. Gonna be riding in a supercoupe with a 15 inch screen showing me mapquest. 160 gb thinkpad. anyone know how to wire the laptop into the car like they do on the movies.

  • How much do you have to pay per month?

  • $50

  • wow nice vid

  • Thanks for this post.

  • will this work on a netbook because o have one of them if does work im subbing

  • Yes, this will work with a netbook. I use a USB data card with my ASUS eee pc tp get internet anywhere.

  • How about a dest top. Will it work with a desk top is what I'm asking?.

  • Yes, it will work in a desktop. Get the USB version of the data card for easier use with desktop or laptop

  • i have one of the alltel wireless broadband usb devices with an unlimited data plan but i was wondering if i could have it connected to two laptops at the same time, i mean having it in one laptop and being able to connect to the internet on a different laptop

  • Thanks! Wondering if ONE Alltel plan works on TWO laptops at the same time. (one in GA, one in NY).

  • The Alltel plan is locked to the USB modem device. So while you can use it on different computers, you have to reinstall to use with different USB devices.

  • is there a way to do this with an ipod touch?

  • u have a big laptop...

  • I also have a netbook I use with a USB datacard

  • How bigger- How better..

  • These devices connect to the internet the same way your cell phone transmits and receives calls

  • Great video, Bill!

  • Thank you for the advise, I've been trying to figure out the most cost effective solution.

  • i used my mobile sony ericsson k800i for internet on my laptop im on o2 and all i have to do is get a bolt on for a month for free internet so i connect it up to my laptop to use the o2 internet

  • good deal! thanks!

  • do you think i can get if aff amazon for 65 dollars and then not even pay for a month by month plan and still get interrnet anywhere

  • you think i could use this in Norway as well?

  • what is the process to get wireless connection.....please let me know...

    THANKS...............

  • After you install the usb or datacard, you use the Access software to install your contract codes from your cell provider.

Then you can connect to the internet.

  • hello, can i just buy that usb or that card

in a pc store.....just the card

i broke that usb adapter ......

    please let me know

can i buy that in a pc store...

  • I've never seen the card by itself without a subscription in a retail store. Plenty of them on eBay though, without having to buy the service.

  • We generally get a 480k download connection. Fast enough to view YouTube videos. Haven't used it for online games.

We did have a Verizon card at one time, and it was very slow.

  • Hi Bill,

Is there any way to connect ones cell phone to a laptop or home computer to get internet? I have internet on my cell, but why pay for it on my cell and at home right? :) It would be cool if someone made a connector using a cell phone to get internet.

    thanks

  • On some older cell phones you can get a data cable to connect to the USB port of your computer to connect to the internet.

But most cell providers will disable your account when they detect high cell usage that way.

  • Is this international as well?

  • Check your cell phone carrier for their data plan rates and coverages. Many do offer international data plans

  • Works almost anywhere, Just dont go swimming with it, bad idea (;

  • great thanks!

  • hey will this work in another country like jamaica

  • Most cell phone carriers offer data plans for devices this. Check the coverage map of your cell carrier.

  • yes if you have international

  • thank you for the Video

where i could buy this ?

    how much is each month?

    thank you

  • Most cell phone carriers now offer data plans, usually $59 a month.

Find out from your cell carrier which USB modem they sell, and then find that modem on eBay.

  • thanks dude now i get wifi while my mom is driving me place like utah

it worked great for 5 stars

  • if you car has a power port in the back or where the lighter goes in you can buy an adapter that plugs in to it. you can plug you power cord in and charge your laptop

  • Go to walmart, buy a 110 volt inverter that plugs into the cig lighter of your car.

Plug your laptop into the inverter.

As long as the car is running, it won't run down the car battery.

  • On some laptops you use a 110 volt inverter that plugs into 12 volt cig lighter plug in car

  • alltel/verizon doesn't have an unlimited plan...most they have is 5gb

  • why not a uy a card from alltel card you didnt tell us

  • If you buy the card or usb modem from Alltel it will cost you $200 or you have to sign a 2 year contract.

If you buy the usb modem off of eBay, it will cost under $50 and you can sign up for a month-to-month plan at Alltel.

The plan price stays the same - regardless of who you buy the card from.

  • Wow I wonder how heavy that XPS is. This is just another reason I'm a Mac user.

  • If you want to see my lightweight computer, check out the ASUS 1000HA.

Lighter than a mac, 1/4 the price of a mac, comes with XP, 160gig, 1 gig ram, 6 hour battery, weighs under 3 pounds.

  • "while im driving down the motorway at 70mph my wife is next to me browsing the inernet watching youtube videos looking at porn..." only joking :) nice vid thanks

  • arent the cards free?

  • No. Not from Alltel, AT&T, Verizon or Sprint.

  • O2 do good deals on mobile broadband.

  • Anyone know where to get software for the Franklin 550?

  • Axcess Quicklink - it is available on CD with the Franklin card

  • I bought the Franklin Modem on ebay and have no CD. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Contact the seller, he should have the CD that came with the modem. If he doesn't, you may have to buy another modem and make sure it includes the cd

  • me :p

  • Thing is, Verizon bought out Alltel, so I'm not sure what will happen.

    I got an alltel phone.

  • work with ipod touch?

  • Good video

    Easy to follow

(JUST UR EXCUSE TO TELL US UR LIFE HISTORY)

  • i was wondering how to make a usb modem on at&t network work faster mine works sooo slow if anybody knows how to fix my problem let me know oh i have vista if that helps any

  • look ive got 2 laptops and the password of wireless internet connection is saved on it because we moved house but i want the wireless connection on my computer... how can i unmask the password from my laptop and put it on the computer

  • I use snadboy revelation to unmask passwords.

It is a free program. Find it by searching google for snadboy revelation.

  • i have the same thing for my laptop except its not alltell. its sprint and its really fast!!

  • Very helpful and informative. I've been wondering about this, how to stay connected to the Internet while on the road, and all the other options I've researched seem too expensive. This one is do-able and the seems uncomplicated.

  • tasty computer collection

  • could you play a ps3 online with one of those if you plugged it in to a laptop, and plugged an ethernet cord into the laptop and plugged the other end into a ps3?

  • wow, seems a bit complicated

I don't think LAN connections with ethernet work backwards, but maybe I am wrong.

If you can hook up a ps3 to a computer with internet, and i guess it would work...

  • yes just make sure u allow sharing with ur pc

    internet sharing

and the other network cart set up its ip to

    192.168.0.1 and thats it

  • mad hax sir!

  • He goes fast Dam 70mph

  • Is there a website link for this month by month plan? This looks like something I need. I checked Alltel's website, but I just see WI-FI plans. Am I not looking in the right area, or is this just an instore special only?

    Thanks,

    Love your vids!!

    Ponti

  • You can sign up for the month by month plan at the Alltel store - for data and / or phone.

The monthly price for month-to-month is the same as the monthly pricing of a long term contract, but you are not locked in, and can turn it on or off with a phone call to Alltel.

They probably offer it on their web site, but have it hidden away.

  • Great information Bill! Plus I love the picture of the View/Navion in the background!

  • We love our Winnebago View motorhome - we've travelled from coast to coast in it. And usually we continue to produce videos, do software support, write articles, and carry on our internet business, while on the road in the motorhome.

That's why we depend on internet anywhere tools.

With the motorhome and internet anywhere, we are no longer chained to the office!

  • I learn so much from your videos. Thanks Bill for being so generous in sharing information. I will try this.

  • That's awesome!

  • nice i enjoy this i might try it when i go to florida next month

  • Cool!!

    5/5

  • So thats how its done! Great tip as usual!
