Cats are very aware of time, so make sure that you put them on a feeding schedule that fits yours. If your kitten isn't one that eats just because food is there, you can leave dry food out for them to snack on. If you get a female, get her spayed because she will meow and be a lovable pest when she goes into heat. But other than that, just lots of loves and cuddles and patience. And just remember, cats generally name themselves. They'll respond to which ever name they like best.
Right from the very start, gently but firmly teach your kitty to stay off the table and kitchen counter-tops, unless you enjoy finding cat hairs in your pancake batter.
I have 4 cats! Get at least one litter tray, put it somewhere that if they make a mess it doesn't matter. Be prepared for little accidents on the floors and ready to clean up.
Food designed 4 kittens is available, I recommend this as it has all the nutrients they need.It wil tell you on the box how often to feed.
Get lots of toys, things that jingle, shake or slither, balls, bells etc. Lets them get rid of lots of energy. give loads of cuddles. Make sure they have a designated sleeping place. :D
I would always give a home to two cats, particularly when you are away a lot. At least they have each others' company and you def will have double fun. I am the slave to two males and it is heaven (and hell).=) However, have them neutered and all will be fine. Good luck and lots of fun.
I don't have any pets -- err scratch that, human pets, one 13 year old, one 6 year old and a 18 month old, and a male cat. No he's not neutered -- which is why I have all these little human cats running around. Oh right, you asked for advice -- love it, be friendly to it and keep it warm, safe and happy. and have a name for it's behaviour not because you like the name. So don't name it poppy -- but a good name. like Fred or George.
xD You're funny. Unless you have a male that's neutered, I'd pick a female as a first cat. Male cats can be annoying when they spray. Although, I find that male cats are more affectionate and loyal toward women. Could just be the cats I've had though lol. Shelter cats are good to get too - don't know for sure since I've never had one from a shelter. First thing to do when you bring it home, scratch it's paws in the kitty litter box a few times to show them where it is. I hope you enjoy it! :)
Lastly, figure out a good place for the kitty litter box where the litter that gets kicked out isn't going to be TOO big of a deal but put it in an area where you will have an easy time scooping it every day. No, srsly, do it EVERY DAY it will smell better and your cat is much less likely to go outside the box if it is kept clean.
Yay for you, adopt from a rescue or shelter. I know that Kittens are adorable, but consider an older cat, they are much easier since you will probably have a better sense of their personality, they are easier to have as your 1st cat, and there are many who need homes. I would get a female, as males can have problems with spraying.
A cat is not something to stress about - but to be joyful about. They're sooooo easy. Just wait!! Training?? Ha. Cats train you. They know what they want and when. Just be attentive and listen. Speaking as someone who has been owned by cats his whole life - really, just relax. Cats are known for their self-sufficiency. :)
