Excellent job on this video. Hope Congress "gets" that their wasting time is only endangering our survival. You should send a dvd to every member and who knows, maybe they'll grow up and do some work.
Sagan wanted peace. Amongst the comments of his videos, I see people of various backgrounds, especially Christians and atheists. But are they getting along? Are they making peace? No. Come on, guys, let's just get along: for Sagan, for humanity.
A third of it is simply stating what is on Earth written in thesaurus barf. The also looks cheap and is somehow stating that space solves the evils of mankind.

@darkmagicianawsome : i dont know if i have to point this out to you but first of all how can a youtube video be " the dumbest thing alive"? and the point of this video is not to say that space solves the evils of mankind, its saying that no matter what we do to eachother, no matter how "evil" or "good" we are. in the grand scheme it means nothing. and the only way to get out of it alive is to work together and stop trying to be better than the next guy... we all live on the same speck.
We need to go beyond the petty limitations of race, nationality, political persuasion, religion, sexual orientation / preference before we think about seriously exploring or colonizing the planets of our solar system. & we need to gain a new level of respect for the environment of our own world, as well. Otherwise we'll return to the Moon, travel to Mars, the asteroid belt & further out, & just repeat the same stupid mistakes that we made & are making here on Earth.
I love how you mixed the images with the tracks of my favorite anime series, I am 25 yrs old and I remember when I was a kid I watched series like Macross and other stuff, at the same time I dreamed of a promising future for mankind in space colonies while watching the series "Cosmos", I was like 10 yrs old when Sagan died, I remember that day was like losing my father, I felt terrible, yet I never met him in person but he was one of the few humans who changed my life, I owe him a lot.
If we dont get along we will never get off this lonley Blue Dot. This is where we make our stand. Carl has been my inspiration and hero from the the first moment I saw him and heard him speak, he should be on all education programs world wide, Ha, like that will ever happen.
It may at first seem that cynicism is a sign of sophistication. It is usually more an indication of self-absorbed immaturity.Any fool can criticize, find fault with life, for there is no sublime skill needed to tear things down.Negativity is always self-limiting,for it surely, eventually consumes itself. The loving, creative, positive side of life has no limitation, for the more it grows, the more possibilities it creates.
@DrComptonCompton Just because you're rich doesn't mean you're evil. Hitler was poor & homeless before WWI and look where he got. Also, my father owns a large nationwide business, but he is a supporter of peace in our species, and only supports war if it is necessary. Lesson: Do NOT assume things, Compton.
Carl Sagan's early death aged just 62 was one of the greatest losses imaginable to the human race. Few men in history have ever said so clearly why we should put aside our petty. childish and self centered passions and work together, not like the Borg but as a free, united collective of individuals all pulling in the same direction. Politics, religion and ethnic division keep us in chains and anchored in all the follies of our primitive past.
In our current day in age when negativity veils everything seen or heard, this speaks a message of hope and probable prosperity of the future. Maybe not seen by our generation, but with a stroke a luck, the next will see a future of cohesion and unity that brings about the best in our race. I hope, I dream, and I imagine this future, just as Carl Sagan did. I just hope I live long enough to see this future.
@TheMandymegan Anything that is not constantly challenged will grow weak. If any hazardous event(s) do happen on 2012, the effect will not be what the Mayans "foretold", as we have grown since then, changed. If it does happen, any tragic event(s) will only unify us, and lead us to overcoming that challenge, or die trying. If you truly believe that we will ALL die on that day, then you have already given up.
@Proph3tTroyer I don't think showing this to people who are drunk/ drinking and wanting to watch more football would really take the time to understand it. But showing it at schools, public events such as lectures, and science channels would be much more effective. Place where theres not electricity pose a challenge as do countries spit by war.
@william526 No, if we were able to travel at the speed of light we would experience severe time dilation on the ship. We would reach the center of our galaxy (also there is no center to the universe). But of course those that stay home would experience it as 27,000 years due to time dilation. Read the special theory of relativity by Einstein.

I met Carl Sagan at a book signing in Atlanta in 1992 - I was installing a computer system and he came by for a book signing! We talked for about 2 minutes about time travel - I asked if a rocket were going 1 mph less than the speed of light - and I ran from the back of the rocket to the front - I would be going faster than the speed of light!! He disagreed saying from whose perspective. He also swiped my Sharpie as he came without something to sign with!!! I let him keep it!!
this makes you wonder, after so long, DOES space end, what other life forms are out there, space just blows my god damn mind apart.....

it will take us 27,000 years if we were able to travel at the speed of light lol
Maybe, when people realize, that it is far more rewarding to conquer new territories in space, instead of conquering them by war on earth, maybe, then, we will know peace on our pale blue dot!
I dont care how pathetic this may make me sound. But I cried listening to this. I cried in joy. That there is still some hope on this small blue dot. That we as a species want to understand. Thank you Sagan. For restoring my hope in humanities want to achieve, to grasp the unknown.
This is nothing special, if you go far enough in distance, heck, of course it will appear small. And you can barely see VY Canis Majoris from Earth and would you call it Pale Red Dot? Of course you would. And if you compare Earth to VY Canis Majoris, you'll see my point.
@candidfellow And how many humans live on VY Canis Majoris? Oh that's right, NONE, seeing as it's a STAR! Way to miss the point of the whole damn video.
Every time I look at the sky, I think about how insignificant all my problems are on a scheme of things. It puts me in my place, but I absolutely love it.

But if we can not agree to this common goal, then we all must be happy with seeing out our lives/species on this Blue Dot...

@british123able True and we might not even be here as humans at that time anyway. We humans tend to think that we are so important to this world and reality is that we are not!!. We are such a conceited bunch...
The Pale Blue Dot should be read by all school children every day. It just might make us a better place and better people, it certainly cant hurt. And this video should be shown to children in schools at least twice a year, every year to make them think. What wonderful world it might be???
@zencat999 Peace is just around the corner. World Peace isn't here yet, but think about it; Europe has only had one war since WWII, and that was a civil war in Yugoslavia. But now those former Yugoslavian countries are allies, and it was ironically through war they became who they are. Lots of the corrupt leaders in the Middle East are now being challenged, and by aiding those civilians, the new leaders, if from the revolters, will not want to kill us, but to work with us.
Human species needs to forget it's petty grudges and start thinking about human expansion to space. The whole galaxy is waiting for us and we can get there, if we only so wish.
First we need to send migrants to Mars, we already have technology needed for this task. Also we need to start developing more powerful spaceships and engines and start exploring Alpha Centauri in the next hundred years. It is the closest star after all.
Thank you so, so much for uploading this. The word "Awe" is so overused today but Carl Sagan's work and indeed his hopeful voice has always inspired that emotion within me.
@ATSMaster"We are the problem" did not occur naturally. Were you ever concerned that there maybe someone or 'something' out there that want us to think we are? You say we are the disaster to the world and yet you keep cooperating with those above, who give you your rules, your knowledge, laws, believes. Ask yourself who is responsible for thought in your head. How do you think it's relevant we are the problem while we choose to give our power away that is being used for our own servitude?
Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977. Sagan had pushed for Voyager to take a photo of the Earth when its vantage point reached the edge of the solar system.[3][4][5] [6] On February 14, 1990, having completed its primary mission, NASA commanded the spacecraft to turn around to photograph the planets of the Solar System.
Between February 14, 1990 and June 6, 1990, one image Voyager returned was of Earth, showing up as a "pale blue dot" in the grainy photo.

one planet...earth
one race...human
all else is irrelevant

The word "Awe" is so overused today but Carl Sagan's work and indeed his hopeful voice has always inspired that emotion within me.

fuck humans on earth, we ARE the problem in the universe! seeing all that is happening on earth just gives me little hope for the earth to be stable.
ATSMaster 1 year ago
@ATSMaster"We are the problem" did not occur naturally. Were you ever concerned that there maybe someone or 'something' out there that want us to think we are? You say we are the disaster to the world and yet you keep cooperating with those above, who give you your rules, your knowledge, laws, believes. Ask yourself who is responsible for thought in your head. How do you think it's relevant we are the problem while we choose to give our power away that is being used for our own servitude?

You should have showed more pictures of where Earth is, to accent the dialogue.
