  • i believe JP Montoya

    will make Gnassi

    proud, entering

    the Sprint Cup chase

    again this year.

  • The race was full of nasty crashes that year

  • I remember watching this live on T.V. As I recall, Al was arguing with the rescuers because he was worried about Chip and wanted them to pay more attention to him.

  • I swear at 1:32 I can see Ganassi's (big, helmeted) head on the other side of the armco amongst the support poles. If there was another sensible layer of armco, or concrete wall, well...

Who would have thought at that point in time that Chip would be the big winner in life?

  • Congratz to chip on the Indy 500 win and then second in the Coke-a-cola 600 yesterday!

  • let alone nearly ended his career, the docs thought he was a gonner at the time

  • Reminds me of Greg Moore's accident.. Ganassi was lucky to hit the wall with the rear first. Shame they didn't learn much from this accident and still kept making those grass edges in the run-off areas.

Great to see Dan Gurney near the wall at 6:56!

  • i know. too bad they didn't learn.

  • Does anyone have the whole race on here??????

  • I believe this might have been the accident that ended Chip's career as a driver.

  • It is.

  • Not exactly. Chip Ganassi actually raced in 4 more Indy Car races after this accident.

    5-26-85 Indianapolis Started 25, Finished 22

    7-28-85 Michigan Started 27, Finished 22

    4-6-86 Phoenix Started 22, Finished 14

    6-1-86 Indianapolis Started 25, Finished 21

  • Really? I didn't know that.

  • @charlesintestine -- Correct. Chip told me (grins) that he doesn't consider this crash to have been the reason his career ended.

  • It was the accident and the first time I saw that was on SPEED in 2007.

  • Cool.

  • All Unser Jr' appears to be one of those trouble making Sciavo twins....

  • You don't know much about Indy Car or I just don't read sarcasm very well...

  • this accident looks similar to greg moore's accident off of two, on the backstraight. Unfortunately those access roads that fontana used to have is what caused moore's car to turn over just prior to hitting the wall

  • yeah, now the whole back stretch is paved

  • I remember this as the first Indy Car (Or CART back then) race I ever saw and it still stays with me. An in credibly competitive race, this bizarre crash, plus the final lap crash with Pancho Carter, and then the race to the flag between Tom Sneva and Mario Andretti. This was the race that really got me hooked to auto racing. Boy do I miss these days.
