Tell me again how a thieving murderer who smuggles illegal materials and raids merchant ships makes a "good guy". In case you haven't noticed, disobeying the government is illegal - "bad guy". To say not all pirates were bad guys indicates you have NO idea what a pirate is - and you probably base your interpretation of this movie.

@7Epitaph You have absolutely no idea from where I base my idea of what a pirate is. People don't always do bad things with bad intentions. I know what pirates are known for but that doesn't exactly make every single one of them 'bad people'. Who cares if disobeying the government is illegal? The government isn't some super intellectual body of morality experts. Truth is, you can only assume why a pirate may have done bad things. You should judge people by their intentions not their actions.

@Bocomarine If a person means to do well and in the process does a bad thing then that doesn't make them a bad person and for that reason people should be judged according to their intentions. What if someone is trying to raid your home and you accidentally kill them whilst protecting your family? There are some grey areas of course, when you judge people by their intentions, but only in extreme circumstances (e.g where the person is mentally unsound, like crimes motivated by religion)

@privateabstract I would agree with what you said... And invading your home ... mm in Arizona we have the castle rule which if someone Breaks in you can Kill them with your gun :P. That is why we have due process to find out what they intended to do and build a case against them. the NDAA does away with that and basically turns america into this video trailer here.... Sending people off to be executed.

@Bocomarine Unfortunately in the UK, these laws have so many technicalities. Obviously, we can't have guns for a start.. and if we attack someone from the rear in our own homes, there is no way to prove that we weren't attacking them while they were trying to escape (having changed their mind), in which case we (the people defending our home) would be in the wrong. :(

disobeying the government not necessary makes you a bad guy, if the government is bad (lets say WWII nazi's) your not a bad guy for disobeying them by for example hiding Jews in your house.

The government is in this scene taking away some basic rights from there people and hanging a young boy,

so there pretty much bad guys themselves.

Jack is kinda a bad guy too but not that bad, and very funny and cool.

@BloodyFlesh626 If you had heard them, they said "associating". Which means that boy could have had something to do with helping a pirate.

Will does die, just not in this scene. And if you had watched the previous movies, you would then realize that Will, Jack and Elizabeth were sentenced to be. Jack escaped. The only reason Will and Elizabeth were not was due to the fact that Commodore loved Liz, and Liz loved Will.

It's confusing yes, but it all makes a brilliant movie series.

I think one of the most perfect experiences I've ever had seeing this movie in theaters was when a baby (yes, a BABY) started crying after the hanging and the screen goes to the falling Piece of Eight. Don't ask why anyone would ever bring their infant to see a movie like this; they just stupid, but that was still kind of...fitting, because it accented the moment so well.

During a hanging, you wouldn't always die once the rope went taut. Sometimes the rope would be too short, which wouldn't cause the neck to break. Thus, they would suffocate to death. So, people had to add "Hanging by the neck until death" during the sentencing process.

I suppose it's scary in the sense that it depicts the stripping of all civil liberties and rights, to the point where you're even 'suspected' of being a pirate, you die.
