  • I just love a good murder ballad!

  • I first heard this song sung by the Louvin Brothers. Doc and Monroe sing it a litle differently. Great "golden age" stuff. I love it.

  • Their voices blend great together!

  • why do i always teary eyed when i hear such awesome tunes

  • The "Father of Bluegrass" I grew up listening to him and all the old masters. Todays Country sounds more like rock & roll

  • tear jerker for Ms Ohio to hear......

  • Beautiful song! The harmony is great. Thanks so much!

  • two of the best of all time

  • ricky skaggs is playing the watseka theatre watseka illinois on aug 26

  • Well you are a bit closer than the other fellow, but let me see if I understand you. That Mt Music came first and that is folk, Bluegrass is next then Country and then Blues and then jazz, folk, rock and the remainder. Are you saying that each one came from the one before it? A simple explanation will work. I will answer your explanation. Thanks for writing.

  • Ohio touches theBlugrassState, that's close enough!

  • Ohio touches theBlugrassState, that's close enough!

  • Немного напомнило "Это было давно..."

Хотя, по-смыслу, скорее "Отцвели уж давно хризантемы в саду..."

    Спасибо!

    Billy Monroe & Doc Watson - ... !!!

    ARIGATO!

  • To Md65000, I kindly suggest that you study the diff in all the standard works, LofC web site, etc. This tune has a history much like Oxford Girl, Knoxville Girl and other tunes that came to America which are folk based and might have later because bluegrassed. Folk is always the first in American music history. Or perhaps that is what you do not know, I do not accuse you of anything, but keep your opinion to yourself. Because it is an unlearned opinion.

  • @stanleybadams I suggest you learn history, Bob Dylan is folk. Lets see Mountain music formed from Settlers. Then first American music Bluegrass = MR.BILL MONROE, COUNTRY, BLUES, JAZZ, FOLK, ROCK, DISCO, POP,METAL,POP COUNTRY. I believe that covers it. Learn you're history.

  • @bluegrasssingingman By the way this video is Bluegrass not folk. Take you're Liberal made up history and shut up. I bet you're one of the Liberals that say Blacks invented Bluegrass Music, aren't you.

  • @bluegrasssingingman Of course you cannot even spell, teabagger!

  • @NelsLindquist Hey you Liberal Homo Democrat, I can't spell? You are one to speak. cannot- can not, teabagger - tea baggier.

  • This is not bluegrass in style, it is American Folk music that came from those of before. Bluegrass is more of a style of American Jazz but this is simple Folk music.

  • @stanleybadams You obviously don't know anything about Blugrass or Jazz

  • @stanleybadams

Jazz is american jazz lol. You're right about folk tunes/fiddle tunes/whatever you call them being different than bluegrass. Bluegrass is like folk/fiddle tunes sped up, with the "High Lonesome" (AKA Bill Monroe) style vocals, and bass and mandolin and banjo. The fiddle tunes would have been played to dance to, sometimes solo, or accompanied by guitar.

  • i keep coming back to this version , cuz i think , as is so many times is the case, the Bluegrass version is far better than the others you'll find on youtube . But why is this beautifully sung duet cut so abruptly at the very end ? ... i guess i have to finsih it off then . Classic!

  • Listen: Neca Falk- Dravski most / Banks of the Ohio

A singer from Slovenia. I think its very good!

  • Aint nothin like a good ole murder ballad

  • Just perfect!

  • Any idea what album this is?

  • @ImperialLegoStudios It's from Monroe & Watson's Off The Record, Vol. 2: Live Duet Recordings 1963-1980.

  • @zany2x Thanks

  • very creepy. and damn good! why dont people write more murder ballads these days.

  • @sharqi666 bahahahaaha yeah, have you heard "where the wild roses grow" ? its reletively new its by kylie minogue and nick cave

  • @sharqi666 haha check out "hounds" by split lip rayfield

  • If someone wrote this same song today with a rock beat, it would be criticized and censored. Bill Monroe was singing edgy songs way before parental advisories were even thought of.

Great song too, it's so awesome to be able to find original bluegrass at the touch of a button! Thanks!

  • @dpotter79 Murder ballads have an honored place in our Kentucky / Appalacian musical heritage. Songs like Pretty Polly and Down In The Willow Garden are other ballads that feature the murder of their lovers. You are right... edgy songs like this one have really been a part of music for time out of mind.

  • @webbyter And Knoxville Girl was a big one

  • @dpotter79 Yeah it's all because of 9/11

  • @dpotter79 -- As others have said, this is not Bluegrass. It's much older. It's not even played Bluegrass style. Nobody's taking a hot licks solo break. No high lonesome. Just a good old traditional song. Lots of folks sang this long, long long before Big Mon and Doc came along, long before Bluegrass evolved.

  • Listen to the way their voices melt together. Amazing to think that perhaps the two greatest innovators of this music would melt together so PERFECTLY. This is just so smooth!

  • I heard a man sing this during a recital. He went full out on the acting. It was AMAZING. Scared the crap out of the audience, but hell, it was great!

  • Great recording! Great Song!

  • this is just beautiful

  • Yeah the whole album of them together is fantastic--I used to sing this one when I went to the old-timey/bluegrass jam sessions years ago...love it!

  • When I was a little girl my grandmother used to sing this song and tell the story about it. I can still hear her voice and see her in her rocking chair. Such a tragic song but with such fond memories for me.

  • I have always loved this version... Bill and Doc both loved brother duet music, and one Doc's first loves in music were the Monroe Brothers.

They could sing their way to the soul on this number!

  • I love these guys solo! but together they are almost magical!

  • wow..beautiful..

  • yeah, love this one. Gotta love youtube, I wouldn't be able to hear this anywhere else.

  • except of course, you know... on the album that contains it. If you like this, you should check it out! Bill Monroe and Doc Watson Live Duet Recordings 1963-1980 by the Smithsonian. I listen to it about as much as anything I own.

  • I love this song :)

  • this is great!!!
