  • if you make min rage its for a reason, you have no skills or experience. if you are a skilled worker you set your own pay. if not i hope you enjoy flipping burgers

  • FACT: Minimum wage kills jobs.

  • I think that this petition to raise the minimum wage to $10/hour is quite fishy. It seems as if the BC Federation of Labor is supporting the Business sector that exploits the workers in BC. This Federation should be asking for a raise to at least cover the lost purchasing power of the wage (30%) to $12/h. Now taking into account that this wage is reviewed every 10 years the Federation should be asking for $17/h. Federation! Help the workers, not the exploitators!!!!

  • We know that the government has been taken hostage by obscure forces and those forces wants to squeeze all they can out of the population. That is the reason why we have not seen an increase in the minimum wage in 9 years. In real terms, the purchasing power has fallen by approximately 30%. So, if the minimum wage is increased every 10 years then it we must be asking to increase it to at least $17/hour, and then we will review it in 2020. So, $10/hour is just to low. $30/hour is more realistic.

  • You know what you get when wages are low, you get consumers buying less things and more credit card debt. That's supposed to make things better?

  • People think nothing of raising CEO's salaries by millions, but heaven forbid a worker (you know, the person who actually creates wealth) get a couple of more bucks. If you're making less that $12 and hour, you might as well stay home. POWER TO THE WORKERS!

  • @thoughtsurfer1 Workers are scumbag.

    Fuck you socialists!!!!!

  • @SuperBanneduser

    your argument was incoherent.

inflation occurs because government bring wages up artificially. wages had nothing to do with purchasing power you idiot. you dont understand economics at all

  • @jumboshrimp09

Where did you study that? FYI we experienced of about 4%/year in the last 9 years and, guess what? the government did not increase minimum wage. Wages provide purchasing power!!! Inflation causes a reduction in the purchasing power because prices go up. If your wage does not go up accordingly then you can buy less with your wage.

An increase in the minimum wage affects prices but it is not the only determinant of inflation.

  • @SuperBanneduser

basically you just told me that increasing minimum wage would cause inflation, thus negating the raise minimum wage employees got in part and decreasing the REAL value of other workers wages and decreasing the REAL value of all workers. take an econ class sometime kid

  • Here's a wild idea: create a new piece of legislation that would require all elected officials/legislators/senators salaries to be calculated as the average wage earned in the province, or better yet, fixed to the minimum wage. We'll see how long minimum wage stays at $8/hour then. I wonder how many money-grubbing politicians would still keep their job after that.

Political leaders are not elected to be seat-warmers. The people who really care about their jobs, don't do it for the money.

  • People really don't understand how wages are determined on the market-place; that much is apparent---if they understood, they'd be decrying the minimum wage as a tyrannical piece of legislation that creates unemployment and stifles on the job training for a young people.

  • My dad has been a cabinet maker/carpenter for probably 30yrs and now he gets laid of every job he finds within a couple months because the companies can't afford it. Also, in about a year my mom and dad will probably be moving to Alberta for better pay and more available jobs.

Also, increasing minimum wage would help the economy out by letting people have the money to possibly afford luxury items.

  • $ 30

  • Scrap that "training wage" bullshit too

  • ofcourse the proles want a wage hike, but unfortunately in our capitalist society we need a "slave class" to do all the crappy jobs that no one wants to do and that pay nothing.

  • why did campbell get voted back in again? please remind me of the non existent pros while i dwell on the cons.

  • Now you understand why there is so much grow ops and prostitution in B.C ? Who wants to work for minimum wage ? Take a look at east hastings! I'm glad I moved back to my native Poland. Here I pay car insurance $200 A YEAR and have a NORMAL family life.

  • If you were to increase the minumum wage by twenty percent you would loose about one forth of minimum wage workers

  • Interesting figures, as this has not been the case elsewhere in Canada. Are they based on some published research or is it your own gut feeeling?

  • well for one i wrote that quick and should have said that if you raise the wage by twenty five percent, not twenty. This is a rough estimate, it would likely be less, but its simple principal. If the cost of labor goes up the quantity of labor goes down. Look up a labor market curve

  • raise the wage!

  • thats the reason were in a a fuking recesion these basterds dont want to pay shit and were the ones making them the money aint that some shit theses damn wetbacks make wages lower as well

  • herohumper, you wouldn't be on the vancouver sun's editorial board now would you?You sound a lot like the fraser institute dickheads who write for that paper."Poor, you are not poor-poor in canada is having only one cell phone or not having cable tv".herohumper, willful ignorance should be a crime, and in your case, they should throw away the key.Nobody is poor by choice.BTW,what do you do for a living? You sound like one of those little trolls working for the BC liberals putting their garbage here.

  • "...throw away the key" that is how you fascist solve all your problems trying to quiet all who don't agree with you. If someone offends you let's use force to quiet them....you liberal-fascist.

Like I said, I have seen poor and you are not them.

  • So you can feel all self-righteous and claim that "society" owes you, but what you are really saying is that you deserve to have someone else wait on you--you are the king and everyone else is part of your private serfdom whose lives are forfeit to your own very special one.

That is a fraud and you are but a common thief. Maybe worse than a common thief, for at least the common thief is honest and doesn't go around acting all holier-than-thou about how he deserves the stuff he's stealing.

  • Equality???? Everyone has the right to be unskilled and therefore paid very low salaries.

You are living in a fantasy world of entitlement. No one is treating you as a slave (I think you don't know the definition of the word).

Why do you keep trying to blame others or your life?????

  • Somebody has to do the work. If you get the service, pay for it!! And even $10 an hour will not pay for rent, hydo, food and transportation. EQUALITY????Love your fellow human beings and dont treat them as INSIGNIFICANT slaves.

  • The first half hour buys a pond of butter, but that is a luxury itm. The next half hour buys a quart of milk and some cheap bread. How is it that so many people can rely on our work and accept the fact that we EARN so little to serve them?????

  • So, if everyone got off their ass and got a nice stoic, unfulfilling and thankless job, who would pour your coffee, or clean the caviar stain off your tie? For there to be rich, there must also be poor. At least we can let the poor fucking survive.

  • Poor, you are not poor - poor in Canada is having only one cell phone or not having cable TV.

Save you tips and travel the world and see REAL poor people and then see how much they DON'T whine about how much everyone else owes them.

  • People keep spouting this nonsense that people who make $8/hour are "lazy" or "unmotivated". I don't know if they're entirely aware of the fact that these minimum wage jobs are absolutely necessary for them to lead their cushy, comfortable modern lives. I'm also not too sure if they're unaware of something called "inflation" but there has been plenty of it in the past 8 years, and minimum wage needs to be adjusted accordingly.

  • Thank you!!!

  • Not lazy or unmodivated - but unskilled and uneducated and have no right to complain - or an education and does not beget a job that is in demand and thus a low salary.

  • $8 an hour is pure bullshit.

  • Oh, I just read...the average wage in BC is $21 per hour. But, this does not include the higher waged salary workers. Puts your salary into perspective.

  • I can't drive more then a kilometer without seeing a sign of employment...and ALL more then $10 per hour. If you are only making $8 then maybe there is a reason.

  • I just saw a sign at Wendy's...$11 per hour... is their skill set that much more then yours????

  • For goodness sakes! I made $10 per hour in 1986 for an entry-level clerical job. They're still paying $10/hr for those same jobs, and rents and fuel have tripled in that time. The rich get richer on the backs of the poor.

  • My wife came over here 20 years ago from Vietnam and didn't speak english. She learned and went to school. She is a CGA and makes $70K!!!

    She didn't whine and complain.

    What is your excuse again???

  • gordon campbell is a piece of shit

  • RAISE IT TO $15!

  • that's just unrealistic.

  • well $8 is bull... i'm makin 8.35! how am i suppost to pay for gas, food and beer off of that!

  • Take the bus, eat less and mooch off people. =]

  • If all You Dull Witted Idiots hadn't Noticed

There is Many people in that Video who are making near minimum wage.

If you don't live it, don't say anything about it.

$8 an hour is Bullshit, You Can't live with that.

Vancouver...B.C. is too far gone for living prices, especially Victoria.

  • You can in Regina.

  • we all can't move to regina....it probably would cost a lot, and i'm only making $8 an hour!

  • Hey pokerboy, are you that guy standing on the street corner smoking a cigarette begging while behind you is a large "Help Wanted" sign?

  • I have been lucky enough to travel for my work around the world and I have seem poor people - YOU are not poor. Canada, especially Western Canada is the easiest place in the world to survive - if you can't make it here you can't anywhere.

The Poverty Line is not real - man made by the folks who brought you welfare. Canada's poor have less but have more then enough. You are not starving like many people are in the world.

    Stop whining.

  • Hey pokerboy....FYI, most of your education IS paid by the Taxpayer (me!). My family makes $150k and we live in a $1M house, as many people do, why? because we have an education that begets a good paying job - not a PHD in the liberal arts and then a job a Starbucks.

Vancouver living is not a right - if you can't afford living here move to Regina.

The government doesn't set your rate of pay...you do!!!

  • You make $150K a year but your screen name is Herohumper. And in response to the good education you need money to get one and its hard to pay the cost of a university education when your making $8 an hour.

  • The education system in Canada is one of the best and cheapest, thus a lot of people have degrees. There are government loans, grants, burseries, scholerships to help. Don't waste your (and my tax) money on an Arts degree. Get a degree that begets a good job.

If this does not help, nothing will.

Go get a good degree, a good job, and contribute. Take it from me life is a lot better.

Oh, if I can do it anyone can. Stop whining.

  • Yeah and then you're spending the next decade paying off the student loans. Everyone I know who has gotten a loan has told me it's not a good idea. And not everyone is technical or business, scientific etc. minded. Some people ARE really good at the arts and such (besides what you might think. And who cares about your tax money there's the next Emily Carr). I have friends that were basically kicked out of their house and have no choice now but to work a min. wage job.

  • "next decade paying off your loan" What do you expect?

"Some people are good at arts" Great for you - but don't complain about not having skills and therefore no good paying job.

"Kicked out of their house" how sad

  • "What do you expect?"

How about a way that MOST people (not just the rich) can afford unversity degrees without having to pay back hundreds of dollars a month for years to come.

"Great for you - but don't complain about not having skills and therefore no good paying job."

Who's complaining? I'd rather be happy and living moderately then unhappy and rich anyday. And so many people can get a boring degree but much fewer can actually create a great work of work. That is SKILL in itself buddy.

  • *sorry I meant 'work of art'. Just deleted something, moved it around but totally forgot to change it.

  • But honestly. Just TRY living in a world with no creative minds and see how BORING it would be. I don't get the scientific/technical minds and you, obviously, don't understand the value of artistic ability. And you go on about taxes. We all pay them, so we might as well do what we want. And who's to say what you will fund will pay off? How many people drop out of univerity or trade school. And how many end up just sucking at their jobs in the end. You're taking a change no matter what.

  • *chance not change

  • You know what, I have worked a few jobs and have realized, I would rather work at a job that I am passionat about and that I love, for a shitty wage. Than work at a job where I can make that 150K and be miserable.

Right now I am making 11.03, but I have to do graveyards at a Timmies.

Oh, and th job I will have someday, doesn't pay well, but I will be helping the world by educating ppl about animals and conservation.

So you can take that 150K job and shove it.

  • Good for you...sound like you have a very rewarding job - my point is, if you complain about your salary, STOP.

Anyone can make what I do, ANYONE!!!

Many people I see feel like the world owes them something....we don't.

  • Anyone can, if they are willing to chase th right career, ut what about the people that can't have a career yet? What about the university student behind the counter at Timmie's working for $8.03/hr to try to cut down on student loans. It is going to get harder too, funding for post seccondary has been cut, my college is out 2.5mil, so who do you think is going to pay that extra money? The students. Gordon can give himself a raise, so he can give us one to.

  • First of, funding was not cut - it was redirected to programs that society needs: nursing, trades, etc. Second, that is not the governments money, it's mine, the tax payer and I have no problem with seeing my money going to programs that will benefit society.

As for your student loan, buck up, we were all there.

And third, Gordon does not set your wage, YOU do.

  • Well guess what hotshot, I am a taxpayer too, we all are. When you are in the hospital, who do you think pays for your treatment? Us, that is the beauty of this country.

It is true, we set our wage, but most high paying jobs are not open to students. And yes, we have all been there, but post secconary education was cheaper.

And it is just not me, my parents were stuck raising my sister and I on $400 a month.

  • Well, "hot shot" when you are in the hospital, who do think treats you? Do you think if 100% of YOUR taxes went to 1 visit to the ER it would be covered - No, it takes the rest of "us" to pay for it.

Why would a high paying job be open to a student, they were not when I was one.

You should be proud of your folks - I bet your dad did not whine. What would he say if you whined to him about your pay.

  • the real reason they're not raising it to $10 is because the fuckin government is giving themselves a raise.. out of OUR tax dollars i might add

  • that woman at 2:39 is HOTTT!! your wife is hot!!! YEAH!

  • I don't think what you said is "the exact opposite" of what he said. Furthermore, if we expand the debate to include any laws that make hiring or firing workers more expensive or difficult, one can discern a rather strong negative impact of such laws on the lower classes in countries such as France and Germany.

Oh, and you know, the average German was better off under the pre-war Hitler regime; those pesky Jews simply took one for the team, I guess.

  • right now im 17 im going to school and working full time i have a kid on the way and ive worked at mcdonalds for a year and im still only getting paid 8 65 an hour yes i am trying to better myself but a 10 min wage would make my life o so much more managable

  • join the last union and take a raise

  • If there was a higher minimum wage, businesses would hire less workers to save money. It's a lose-lose situation for everyone - the business owners and the poor.

  • A minimum wage is a barrier to employment. The higher it is the harder it is to get a job. A minimum wage hurts the poor and unskilled.

  • A raise in minimum wage seems like a means of bettering the living conditions of lower-class workers but that's not the case. The raise would lead firms to hiring less workers because the marginal cost of hiring an additional worker would be greater than its marginal benefit. This would lead to less job availability, more layoffs, and increased unemployment. Sure, there will be some individuals better off but in general, a raise in minimum wage would lead to a worse off lower class.

  • be realistic.

    that won't happen.

it's called push yourself for what you want.

the world is harsh, they won't just give you the extra two dollars.

imagine how that would affect the economy.

  • why dont u lazy fuckers jsut get a better job???

  • hey there! some people don't have the skills and are trapped... that's all they can get. lay off them! they deserve better than that. they work hard and get so little in return. it's not fair.

  • it is 10 dollars and hour im pretty sure but if not they should defintly do it

  • re: get an education

checked tuition costs? making 8$/h brings you in about 1k$ after taxes working 40hrs/w. A single 3cr course /starts/ about 300-400$ in my experience.

Try applying for a student loan with little savings (as a hs student you were making 6$) and a current income around 8$.

Hell, i was a restaurant manager making good money elsewhere, with excl. references. I moved to Van, with a booming market, expecting good money. Not so. No responses to job apps, other than 8/h "jobs".

  • for everyone complaining about $8 an hour. why dont you go walk up to a construction foreman and ask for a job as a labourer. youll make 10-15 dollars easy. and for everyone wondering about the 90% of your tution being paid for; go look at the tution prices for foreign students. as for the guy complaining about working two jobs. why do you have a TV if you cant afford it. why do you have a car if you cant afford it? people need to figure out what they want and what they need. stop complaining.

  • I agree with you.. but our dollar is going down with the american (due to inflation) so people need to get paid more or else more people will go into poverty. Or we can go back to using gold and silver and screw inflation in the ass.

  • because most of the employers will rather hire skilled workers if they have to pay higher wages to the unskilled workers.

  • rising the min wage will increase unemployment. some of you may even lose your current job.

when the min wage is increased, there will be more people willing to work than jobs that are actually offered, as result unemployment will be increased. It will be harder to find job. when you ask for increase min wage, ur asking for more unemployment.

  • Basic economics. People need to understand that.

  • yes i know...

so i dont know why those people are asking for higher wages...

  • You are paid based how many people can do that job...anyone can make coffee (though in Vancouver most have a PhD) and thus minimum wage. Living in Vancouver is not a right, if you can't afford it, move (you may get a better job elsewhere).

  • uh yeah it actually is a right to live in vancouver, or wherever the fuck I wanna. god created me, not you or the fuckin government. and until god says otherwise, it is my RIGHT to live wherever I want on this planet. and the only reason that it wouldnt be a right, is because it was taken away from me by the FUCKING GOVERNMENT. BUT I WAS BORN WITH HUMAN RIGHTS GIVEN TO ME BY GOD YOU MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT

  • This was a great video. It's so true. Families working on $8/h are over working and most young people after high school don't even have sufficient rent or down payment for their own place.

  • half the ppl on the vid are dumb fucks

they should raise it to 10

but some of them were saying u cant raise a family off of 8$ or u can live on your own for 8 $ but if your working full time its easy to find a job thats more then 8$

the 10$ is made for students n immigrants

  • There's no reason not to do this... cost of living now is ridiculous

  • I've supported this project from day one! And I will support this this time by rating this video 5 stars + puting it into favorites! Spread the word!

  • also, some of us are in these jobs by no other choice - you think we wouldn't want a better paying job? I've been applying for a very long time for them - it's not for lack of trying, ya know.

  • so, I'm reading all these posts - raising minimum wage would increase the cost of living (were you born yesterday or something?), that there ARE other options out there (what, not enough oxygen to the brain?)The cost of living has steadily increased over the last 6 years, dumbasses!!!!!! Or did you not have to buy gas, insurance, groceries, pay bills 6 years ago??????

  • Why do you get a 54% raise, but you can't raise us to what we need to live on everyday. Does that sound fair? No.

Campbell, I honestly don't think you'll make it through the next election if you don't. You have to start caring for your people and not just a cushy seat in office and making a few other sources happy which I believe you are doing since your stance is so strong on this issue. Did I also mention that it is also illogical?

  • We need some political change across the board, both Provincialy and Federally. We're slowly selling our Sovereignty off to Large American Corporations and their Interests. People are falling asleep at the TV but not seeing what's going on around them. Watch cbc the denial machine and sticks and stones for a perspective on our southern neighbor.

  • I also agree that the minimum wage should be increased. I worked for my first 500 hours at 6.75 an hour. It went up to 8.25 an hour. I have to scrimp and save for university.

You know what Gordon Campbell? Why are you so worried about raising the minimum wage? It would help with the poverty level which I know is a big concern. And if you don't believe in that, then raising the minimum wage will also give these people more buying power which will help boost the economy.

  • I love how the Liberals voted themselves a huge pay increase, but refuse to raise minimum wage. What a bunch of hypocrites. How can anyone afford to Live in the Lower Mainland with $8/hour?

  • the fuckin gov. and politicans all give themselves a raise, but they're already all rich and are living in fancy mansions and have luxurious cars. and yet poor people still live on $8 an hour. and we are paying taxes on every paycheck.. to give the government more money so they can fuck us in the ass even more. nice!

  • Let's go with the few who offer the example, take out loans and get an education. OK EVERYONE does that. Who's gonna wash the toilets now? Who's gonna be your slaves now? Toil at the tasks you were too proud to consider? It's not the peoples fault it's the system and until you truly "educate" yourself you just won't see the flaws in that thinking. Even with a college education you are still going to be stuck trading wages for labor. Just better wages for less labor.

  • My daughter has to work (first job) 500 hours at $6.00 an hour in order to get $8.00 an hour down the road! Woo hoo...lots of incentive there! You know how long it takes to get 500 hours in when you are going to school and working? Yes, months and months and the employers "love it!"

Come on "Gordon Campbell", get with the program and recognize a problem exists. If you raise the minimum wage, maybe people will want to work as there would be a little light at the end of the tunnel!!

  • $6?? holy shit. wow, at the end of the day if your lucky you might be able to afford a ride home!! with the skytrain/bus fare increase of 2008, it'll be a miracle!

  • wonderful video

  • Raise it to twenty dollars an hour for everyone and thirty for essential services.

Wage Labour? Wages for your Labours. Our capitalist society takes the skills and monies of the masses and funnels it all up to a minority of elites and wealthy who record record profits. The money never flows back down to feed clothe or house the very people that make their outrageous lifestyles possible.

  • I think that it is great,

In Williams Lake you can't even get a full time job. Graduates not attending post secondary are looking for two jobs. It is a real sad situation. Also some places will only hire family and friends so it's not what ya know it's who you know.

  • Great video and I hope he cares.

  • Yes I agree they should raise the min wage the people that you work for I would like to see them work off of min wage.Or these people who sit on their %^&&^ and eat bon bons all day.we need more money.

  • Hey Gordon we have lots of jobs right? TOO BAD THEY ALL PAY $8 AN HOUR YOU FUCKING LIAR

  • O he didn't lie my friend, there are "lots" of jobs out there if you want to wash toilets and scrub floors for $6-8 an hour!!!( Just hope you have 500 hours in before you accept the toilet washer position, otherwise you get $6!!

  • comments about laziness and education are ridiculous and show your arrogance. we need workers to staff our gas stations and convenience stores and retail outlets. imagine going to get some gas, but there was no one to keep the store open? in rural BC, we are starting to see this. PEOPLE DESERVE A LIVING WAGE FOR WORK. i support this campaign 100%.

  • Min. wage should at LEAST be $10 an hour... think that in a crap area of the lower mainland rent for a 1 bedroom is 600$ and if you have kids forget it... lookin at $900 if not more a month then factor in food, utilities, laundry, clothing, school costs each month, daycare... it is insane to think ANYONE could survive on $8 an hour.

  • I do agree that it should be $10/hr, but remember that if you work 40 hours a week at 8 dollars an hour, you net around $2300 a month. That's quite a bit of money, assuming you don't blow it all. As well, as I stated above, loans are an excellent way to get through school. At least in BC, the government forgives quite a lot of money through the Millennium Scholarships.

  • Do you realize what you just said?? Working for 8$ and hour for 40 hours a week only nets $1280 a month before taxes, you could only make $2300 if you were getting paid $14 an hour. $1280 is not quite a bit of money.

  • In Victoria rent for a 1 bedroom can range from $700-800 and more for fancy ones, I'm lucky and I only pay $640 but say I had 1 kid, 2 bedrooms here can go up to $1200 even there's no way a single parent could live off 8$ an hour around here, possibly if there were two parents but it would hardly leave any room for savings and what not. Maybe we wouldn't force so many people into low income family housing if we had a higher minimum wage.

  • and where do you suppose we get the money to pay this tuition from? I have so many friends that work and go to school full time. and still have trouble making ends meet!

  • I don't agree with the original poster, but I thought I should point out that if you are in a situation where you feel the need to have a minimum wage job, you should just take out loans.

I would have felt like a moron if I had worked for 3 years and then found out that all my friends were having large portions of their loans forgiven. That, combined with the fact that you can defer them when you graduate, is a win-win situation.

  • these people still need to buy food and pay rent, I have a friend with student loans who still has trouble making ends meet every month. He's single and has nobody relying on him and is going to have to cut back on classes next semester so he can make a living.

  • Ya ok buddy, and what do you do for a living????

Have Mommy and Daddy paid your way in life to get those skills you talk about?

Not all people have the ability to get the skills you refer to....... if you think being a salesman or furniture mover require skill, than I hope you spent your money more wisely!

  • Yes, but we live in BC, not Africa. We'd be pretty damn well off in Africa, but the living expenses in BC are not the same as Africa. So, your statement is only applicable to a certain degree.

  • that is the most ignorant piece of shit I have read in a very long time.

  • Way to go BCFED! People need to make enough money to get by with. I love your idea of tying it to the Cost of living.

    Keep up the good work!

  • People who point out that those making minimum should educate themselves usually ignore the actual meaning of a "minimum wage".

I believe what a lot of people blatantly ignore is the fact that the "minimum wage" was in fact intended to be a "minimum living wage". OR to define it a little better "a wage high enough to provide a single income earner a sustenance living". IE Food, Clothing, Transportation, Rent.

  • The fact that the "minimum wage" was never indexed at all to inflation allows the wage makers to completely disregard cost of living increases. Never implementing a law demanding that the "minimum wage" be re-evaluated on a per annum basis has ensured that the "minimum wage" is only increased with hard fought efforts by the people who are most directly affected.

  • Most of these minimum wage earner spend so much time working multiple jobs to support their families and loved ones they simply do not have time to bring the needed political pressure to the politicians.

The poor do indeed stay that way and the minimum wage has only risen far enough in the last 20 years to prevent outright revolution. I urge all who sign this petition to FORCE politicians to index the minimum wage to cost of living in some manner.

  • Fighting to keep the minimum wage above the poverty line will have to happen every year unless laws are implemented to keep the minimum wage an actual "minimum living wage".

Apologies on the length.. Discussion on this topic is needed and is impossible with a 500 char limit

  • I was reluctant to sign this petition, because if minimum wage was hiked to 10 bucks, wouldn't the cost of everything else eventually inflate with it? It wouldn't stay matched for long. There's no point. $8/h full time is enough for one person to get by if you're smart about it. If you're making $8/h and you want kids, or you find that it's not enough for your "wants" (not needs), you're going to have to start looking at some other options, simple as that.

  • if you cant afford some of your "wants" as well as "needs", whats the point of even living!!!!! get up go to work, come back go to sleep. get up to work to work, come back go to sleep. repeat!

  • Then START SAVINGS. You're never going to get what you want as well as need if you expect everything to just COME to you. I really am baffled that we're having this conversation. It's common sense.

  • hard to start savings at 8 loonies an hour, with rent being in the $700-800 range (cheaper places are located in slums, like hastings or downtown eastside.. no way am I living in those crackhouses) with 2008 transit fare increase, along with everything else like groceries and various bills.

I dont even make minimum wage, I make $11 at one job, and $12 at another. and even so, I still struggle. I can imagine how far past rock bottom those making 8 bucks an hour have gone

  • This is not exactly true. There are two kinds of immigration: professional and family. All professional immigrants who I know are the real professionals and hold much better positions than an average Canadian. Simply because they are motivated, energetic and got nice education back in their countries. Family class is not that successful as they were not that good even at their origin countries. Canada exports poor people by family immigration.

  • Your salary is based on your lack of education and lack of skills ONLY. You are paid what the market states for your job.

  • Your wage is based on your lack of education and lack of skills. You are paid what the market states.

  • if they raise minimum wage to $10 whos to say the price of living wouldnt go up with it?

  • I think its more to get the minimum wage caught up with the rising living prices.

  • It would not stay matched for long. Other prices would eventually inflate with it, and therefore ruin the economy even more.

  • minimum wage sucks guys sign the damn thing and stick it to Gordy so that he can realize that housing costs are off the hook and that 8 bones and hour is as stupid as his drunk driving in Hawaii.

  • If you're choosing to work a minimum wage job, then what are you doing thinking of living in a house? If you want bigger and better things, get a better job. You just have to look. My boyfriend works at Merit furniture for 17/h, and formerly worked at an Auction house for 15/h. They're down in the same category with the 8/h jobs, neither require education, so why are people bitching when there ARE other options out there?

  • Lots of people out there don't have a choice honey. where I live your hard done by to come by an open position and when you do if it's 8 bucks an hour, you snap it up.

  • Well you know, condoms are free. 8/h is enough for one person to live off.

  • I'm guessing you don't make 8/hr. So why don't you go quit your job and work somewhere and see if you can live off that much.

  • Actually I work at Pizza Hut. I started at 8.25, like most businesses in BC, and now I'm making 8.33 after 1 month, because I do a good job. I'm expecting regular raises. And no, I don't live off daddy's salary either, as you might be compelled to assume as well.

  • You don't have a wife or children, therefore maybe it is possible for you. Also, depending on which neighborhood you live in, the cost for rent may vary.

  • If you work 8/h then why would you have children when you know you can't provide for them? If you decide you want a child, you'd better have a way to take care of it. If you didn't plan on having a child, then it's just plain carelessness; it's not the government's responsibility to pay for your mistakes.

  • You dumbass go read my comments under LloydHollywood ... PoS

  • You may not live off Daddys salary but sure you dont help pay any of daddys mortgage do you, except maybe your cell phone bill.

  • I do not own a cell phone, and my father does not pay mortgage anyway, as he is a smart man and went to school for 7 years after he graduated and makes 80,000 a year as an electrical engineer, and built his own house. He actually worked hard for his wages, instead of all the lazy asses here whining that minimum wage is too low.

  • And for the record, most sons and daughters don't pay their parents' mortgage, and a cell phone bill is not included in a mortgage in any way, shape, or form. What the fuck are you on?

  • Hahaha your Dad went to school for SEVEN years to make 80k a year... OMG.. my fiance went to school for 9 months and makes the same amount... hmmmm.

Um some kids actually contribute to the households they live in, so I see you live scott free in Daddys house, no wonder you could give a fuck about others who have to pay their own way in life.

And where did I say that a mortgage payment and cell phone bills were one in the same you dolt.

  • I don't live with my fucking dad, I have no idea why you keep saying that.

You said "you don't pay daddy's mortgage, except your phone bill", which makes no sense. The two are unrelated.

  • You may not live off Daddys salary but sure you dont help pay any of daddys mortgage do you, except maybe your cell phone bill.

  • LOL good job! here's 8 more pennies for you!! lol!!! go buy urself a snowcone at the end of the month with ur nice salary raise witha job well done lmao!

  • what makes you think that we CHOSE to work a minimum wage job, and that we all WANT to live in a house?????? Boy, you may be educated, but what you have posted is so very STUPID.

  • Everybody has a choice, so don't give me that. And I'm not educated; I'm a high school drop out, working the 8/h just like everyone else, and I have no complaints.

The original poster said "housing costs" so I assumed that person was thinking too big for their salary. I never said everyone wants to live in a house. Calm yourself.

  • Lmao....

I work at a dman good job for $10 and hour and the only thing that I can afford is a room in a bourding house. When rents are $1000/month for a bachelor min wage doesn't cut it.

  • Average rent for 1-2 bedroom apartment or suite where I live is 400-600...maybe you need to lower your standards a bit. I wouldn't call 10/hr a "damn good job", but the point is that you can get by on it if you're smart about it.

  • I meant by the retired porson being the elderly folks just getting extra cash.

  • Our tuition is subsidized in Canada...the best for the buck. People here have huge school debt because they go to school for soooo long and graduate with some useless Arts degree and work at Star Bucks and whine about their debt.

  • I do work with one (actually several) of these immigrants you talk about - they are working as techs. in the same hosp. as I but are doctors in China.

  • If you are a student with a part-time job (getting 90% of their tuition paid for by the taxpayers) then it is enough.

If you are an older(even retired) person looking for extra cash - then it is enough.

If you are not, you need to understand you are

uneducated and poorly trained in any career to deserve more money - get in reality.

I do not want to pay $8 for Big Mac.

Ask yourself how educated am I and why do I only make minimum wage.

  • Please explain to me why I am paying $5800/yr for tuition if 90% of my tuition is paid for by taxpayers.

  • you fucking moron, my tuition doesnt get paid for by taxpayers otherwise why the fuck am I $35,000 in studen loan debt. get a fuckin education yourself before typing again you fuckin dillweed

  • wow you are an angry little man

  • Gordon Campbell's wage is indexed to inflation, so he gets a raise every year to keep up. On the other hand, BC's lowest-paid workers have not got an increase in 8 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!

    Amazing, huh?

  • I'm all for the raising of minimum wage, but please understand, if you raise minimum raise across the board you will wipe out small buisness; the way to go is minimum wage based on profits.

  • Based on profits then I should be making about 19$ an hour but I don't I make 8.75 and hour at a major grocery chain... that Jimmy Pattison owns... so I should be making major for min wage then.. but nope Jimmy is cheap...

Oh and to someone who said that if someone didnt plan to have kids that they are mistakes .. you need to seriously give your fuckin head a shake..

  • People get into a relationship stay for years maybe have a kid or kids decide to raise them while the hubby or possibly the wife works therefore skills go down the toilet cause of changing technology and then they split up for some reason that person who was home for years needs to find a job but only place that will hire him/her pays 8.00 an hour...Grow some brains tard... Min wage should at the very least 12$ an hour to live...

  • the BARE min rent in the SCUMMIEST places for a bachelor suite is 500$ a month.. then add all the other stuff to it.. doesnt go far.. and with kids (not mistakes) there is no way.. cause lots of guys dont pay their child support either to help with the cost of living for the children they produce either.

Sorry but couldn't stay under 500 without getting the point across.

  • im getting $9/h and it's not enough !!! raise raise raiiiiiiiiiiise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why don't you find a better job? Why don't you go to a college to get a better education? Why someone has to pay for you laziness?

  • Why don't you find a better job? Why don't you go to a college to get a better education? Why someone has to pay for you laziness?

  • But don't get me wrong, I'm not against the minimum wage rise. I'm just wondering why people instead of asking "please please rise"

don't take any real steps to improve their situation. Even a traffic control person makes more money...

  • Should be $12...
