@DavidKTMS They varied the speed to throw their opponent off if you always hit it the same speed it's kind of predictable. Also they dropped it right over the net made it hard to get.
I enjoy both players tremendously, but the moon balls decrease my interest. I kept waiting for one of them to just hit the ball, and Tracy seemed to be the only one to give it a try consistently. I'm not keen on the waiting game, I am more partial to the players who make things happen....that's why Martina dominated all of them back in the day.
Tracy's so called injury to her back was due to the fact she didn't strech, Billie Jean and Chris tried to tell her to strech after her matches, but she didn't listen. She developed a siatic nerve.
Chris and Tracy were both champions. There is no doubt that Tracy had to cut her career short due to serious back injuries not due to burn out. Chris said herself that she had never seen anyone (with the exception of Monica Seles later) that wanted to win every single point that Tracy's intensity scared her.
I just watched Laura Robsons win in 2010 Hopman Cup final. I'm not denying Evert and Austin were great Champions...but the game has moved on so much. Robson is 15 and unranked and she hits the ball min x2 as these two are. Watch it - difference is incredible
What interests me more is what would have happened with Tracy and other players like Graf, Seles and other players who came along at the end of the 80's. Recall, Tracy was 18 years old when she won her 2nd US Open. She would have been 25 in 1988, well within her peak, the same year Graf won the Grand Slam. And there's no question that Tracy would have improved the weaker points of her game over time. Too bad we'll never know how it would have turned out.
Yeah, right...except that Evert played through all sorts of trials into her 30s and ended her career with 18 slam titles, while Austin totally burned-out ("claiming" back problems) in her early 20s and weasled away with 2 Slams.
Oh, and Evert clocked Austin 4-6 6-1 6-1 in a big Open match to regain No. 1 in 1980 and, in their final meeting ever (1982), she handed Austin a double bagel (6-0 6-0).
Yeah. In the big scheme of things, Evert was REAL worried about Austin.
@Vengeance509 Austin didnt burn out. She loves the game and still commentates. She did have back problems and then was involved in a bad car crash in 1989. She had a lot of bac luck and would have won at least a dozen slams. She leads the series with Evert
9-8 so yeh Evert was wurried about tracy. Idiots like you make me sick
Evert was a mediocre player who won by psyching out her opponents. It was nice to see her getting a taste of her own medicine, from Austin, and, later, from Navratilova.
Austin had an incredible year and half against Evert, no doubt. However, Chris won their last match 60,60 exposing Austin's lack of variety and stiff, mechanical groundstroke production. Austin was a fighter, but with a more limited game than Evert's. Hum 18 grandslams, 18 years in the top 3, greatest winning percentage of any professional...pretty mediocre...I guess the definition of the word has changed.
Evert looked quite beaeutiful here. Poor Tracy. Who would have thought back then that this would be the first of only 2 grand slams for her before her Back injury. She must have gone through hell watching the Chris/Martina rivalry all those years. She must be a very strong individual, even just for that.
chris later admitted to being very nervous, she felt tracy was a much better version of herself and found playing tracy "disturbing"... she said she felt tracy would dominate for the next 10 years, she felt she was that good...
is it me or did some points seem realllllly slow and some points the pace was like rediculous fast?

@andyyyp1 : I'll take today's women's tennis over thi era all the time... Those archaic wooden rackets, the boring rallies....

Oh my god, this match is sooooooooo boring, i can't believe people used to watch this and defend this. Thank god the game has evolved .

RF First, I agree they should not use wood rackets if it's bad for the enviornment and all.
But I just keep looking at Baseball who didn't change their bats, and theykep the integrity of their game intact.
But again, the main reason to not use the Wood rackets is if it's bad for the enviornment and all.

@andyyyp1 that is so true. Back then, the points had more variety and they ran each other from side to side. Today, most women hit to the middle.

@sp8211a I don't understand why some just stand there and let the ball go by why wouldn't they try to win every point they can?

Amazing testament to Tracy's raw talent considering her forehand was, errrr, not her best shot.

kangaroosbraun said, "Idiots like you make me sick."
Gee, seeing that kangaroosbraun spells like a mongoloid ("bac luck" and "wurried") he must make himself "sick" on a regular basis.
It can't get much worse than possessing a fourth-grade intellect obsessed with a pigtailed tennis has-been.
Hilariously epic FAIL.

@thadxxx. I think Chris trying to win it as Evert-Lloyd got to her for the most part. Had she stayed as Evert, she would have won more.
