talk about raking it in,a couple of those favor kirk's, go deeper! i have went about 4 feet down before, where others stopped and pulled out early archaic stuff.sometimes there will be a layer of clay 12-14 inches deep and bam another layer of midden. it can happen.

Like GreenPineMuseum stated, the one with the burinated base was made that way, it is not broken. If anything it made have been a larger blade that was broken and then later renotched, the flattend sections we consider broken often times did not hinder the users of these tools. Consider a beauty mark :)

Tim that missing base was meant to be that way. Typically they would snap the bases off some and still use them but I think in the case of that one it was a bigger blade at one point that snapped in half and they worked it down to a point and left the base. If you are hafting a knife into an antler handle you want a stout base so it can withstand bending force within the antler haft.
