In the famous Christmas show early in the series when Fonzie has nowhere to go and tries to pretend he does, but the Cunninghams know he doesn't, at one point Mrs C tells him "You're staying here and I don't want to hear another word about it". Fonzie tells her something like "No one talks to The Fonz like that and gets away with it....until now". Mrs C became Fonz's defacto mother.

This worked because Mrs. C. treated The Fonz like a son. She scolded him out of love like she would to any one of her own kids. As the show went on, The Fonz felt the same way. Mrs. C. really was the first "cool" tv mom. She saw past his "punk", "hood"iness, through to the good person underneath.

The really was a great show.

If ever you create a sitcom where the studio audience is THAT involved, you know you're onto something incredible. Today's "live" sitcoms (which sadly only live on CBS: "How I Met Your Mother," "Two and a Half Men", etc.) are cushioned by fake laugh tracks (to hide where the live audience isn't laughing), as the passion that exploded with these early ones simply doesn't exist anymore (electric characters accompanied by strong writing). These really were 'happy days' in that sense...

Part of the difference is that live-audience sitcoms in those days were really done almost like plays: they tried to do every scene with as few breaks as possible and get the whole episode filmed in very little time. So the audience reaction is spontaneous because in many cases it's the first take.

Today many live-audience sitcoms are done in little bits and pieces, plus How I Met Your Mother doesn't really use an audience (they shoot it all first and then play it back to an audience later).
