So it's better to compare these two things to the beach itself, not to each other. Actually it was mainly the wehrmacht (however its spelt) that fought in WWII. The S.S. fought a bit but it was mainly the normal German army that fought (and many of the soldiers did'nt support the nazis, although they couldn't say that).

Even though they did take Omaha, it was a complete disaster, the amphibious tanks were all destroyed or deemed useless, they couldn't get air support, many soldiers drowned because they had 60 pounds of equips on them, and if they did make it to the other end of the 300 yards of beach, they were pinned down to the sea wall. Even the General in charge of Omaha gave up hope; but naval fire proved to be life saving.
