  • I have to play this for solo and ensemble and...I envy you. My teacher watched you play this video, setting his standards a bit higer than yours, and I just wanted so say good job! Now I have to go and try and beat you at it. ._."

  • That was badass.

  • I love this song and i'm studing it now. And why i'm doing it? Because i saw this movie and love the music.

  • i can't make up my mind about this rendition. the speed is impressive but certain things are lost. BUT after that first roll i feel like your interpretation is right on the money. but then the speed thing gets in the way again. mmm .. i don't know. this all just my opinion. either way, bad ass work.

  • Unbelievable. Has inspired me to learn this piece at least as good as that for Solo And Ensemble! Great Work!

  • This is great. =D Good job!

  • I soooo wish I could do those flurries that well in the beginning. Mine are too slow.

  • too fast

    no music

  • you

    are stupid

  • @woniuguai u mad he's better than u?

  • After watching this video, I have a strange desire to learn this piece, thank you.

  • rich o'meara is a postal worker in virginia.

    true story.

  • I"m glad you played it at the right tempo... 112 in cut time is the same thing as 224 in 4/4

  • I agree with sirnaqvi and she could ask me about the tempo if she wanted to, or just ask her Dad because he knows. When played this fast and so smoothly it has a more lyrical effect. I like what he did with my piece, it has a different quality. It isn't fast to be flashy. It also works at a slower tempo with more of a groove with more stress on the accents and dynamics. Play it the way it feels right to you, as long as you are saying something musical. Be constructive when you comment.....

  • well, i know him, so if it's SO important to you guys about the tempo and whether it's "meant" to be played fast or slow, i could just ask him. LOL

but, in my honest opinion, y'alls seem to be having a pointless argument. interpretation is interpretation. whatevs, yo. haha

  • i hope this is sarcasm.

either that or you were watching a porn video at the same time and commented the wrong video.

at the very least, this comment makes me sick.

  • I don't understand why some of you are saying that O'Meara wanted it slow. It is published in Cut time at 112 bpm circa. It even says "With Energy" at the beginning.

  • i dont know about you guys, but when you guys say that he isnt playing musically, i really don't see where you're coming from, i really liked it, and very much got those memories of not being able to sleep.... i dont know, thats just my 2 cents

  • dude. me too. word for word. whenever i feel restless, i just have a zillion thoughts going through my mind. that's why i liked this one a lot. : )

  • good play but its to fast.

i like it to play it a bist slower,

    nice job!

  • i play this piece a little slower than this, but i think that o'meara intended for there to be some creative license with the tempo, at least on the fast end. i'd never play it this fast, but it's cool to see how it would sound if i did. theres a lot of different effects of the accents when its played like this. bravo.

  • beautiful technique! I would take the tempo a few clicks lower, personally. But your hands look great!

  • man i dont know what they're saying but you did an awesome job! its tight

  • ah ca m'degoute de l'entendre joué aussi vite...c'est horrible,y'a pas d'autres mots.

  • awesome!

  • You must be blind because you can't read the tempo marking at the beginning of the page.

    take a rest buddy.

  • Whatever the tempo is marked as is kind of irrelevant when you convey your musical ideas as well as he did.

  • I don't think the piece was meant to be played in clusters.

Musical ideas missed: accents, decrescendo before B section, B section accelerated too early and not quiet enough...etc

Then again, what do I know? I've only practiced it for a year for university auditions 2 years ago.

  • If someone has a different musical interpretation than you, he or she isn't necessarily wrong. Perhaps you're going for hearing each individual note (I've heard this piece played that way as well), but this recording is focused more on the gestures/lines. I don't think it's a fair assessment to say "you're blind because you play too fast therefore it's not very good."

Don't play the "what do I know" game...I can win that one, trust me. :-)

  • For your information, I know him. I gave him some advice before. I'm sure he's aware that "blindness" thing was a joke.

I don't even know where you got that "individual note" thing, but appparently, your interpretation of my comment is...

  • Just because you heard the piece played that way, doesn't mean it's musical. It doesn't even mean anything at all. It's like someone playing Mozart's Tukish March super fast and not letting the piece flow. It's called butchering.

You can keep on winning internet arguments kid, but make sure you keep an open mind. You're the type that doesn't take criticism gracefully. Take a look at what you said in your Rotations video "I was pretty annoyed with your comment at first"

  • I do take criticism gracefully--I just don't appreciate when people decide to give constructive criticism with bitterness attached. Instead of "I think you're overplaying such and such," I get "obviously you didn't buy the edition with any dynamic markings." I didn't reply to any of the other constructive comments in such a manner.

  • Comment too long:

I can tell you're annoyed with me, especially seeing as you went on all my videos and criticized them. That's fine with me--I never claimed to be a virtuoso at all. Most people putting marimba videos on YouTube are probably students looking for criticism, not incredible players auditioning for jobs.

  • Still too long haha:

And I agree with you that not every way of playing a piece is musical. But I do think that this piece is played very musically here, even if it is not the original way the composer heard it.

If you don't understand what I mean by "gesture" playing vs. individual note playing, check back later this week on my page. :-)
