A pen with a metal casing would either not have enough pressure to write, or if it did, would cause too much friction. Why not just set a flat tray of sand under it with a pointer to scratch into it (maybe the ball on the end would be enough?)
Or...Iron filings under a sheet of clear acetate? Let the magnet do the work?
