The point of the video was to show my folks because at the time they lived 10 hours away. I turned it off as much as possible which is why it wasn't shooting water everywhere anymore, but it was broken, hence then explosion, and that's why it was still leaking. Three hours after this all took place the maintenance guy came and fixed everything and my roommate slept thru the entire ordeal. It was a pretty crazy night, and yes this video is boring as hell.
One reason is the thermostat becomes faulty...stays on and doesnt switch off. That along with a faulty blow-off or satety valve will make it so the extra pressure created by the temperature increase cant go anywhere but outwards. Best thing is to ensure you have an installer that is competent in installing these...with proper qualifications. Im from England so only know legislation and regulations from here. So if its different your end i dont know.
Naturally when you heat water you create steam. Steam expands. And so ALL water heaters are fitted with a safety valve that releases excess steam if the pressure rises too high. This explosion will only happen if a safety valve fails. This is a rare thing but it does still happen which is why yearly maintainance on water heaters are mandatory.
it would have to have a flue to start with being internal and this sort of thing is very very rare to happen with gas appliance cus they incorporate a fail safe device meaning that if is should overheat the unit will fail to off automaticly turning off the gas supply, there are diffrent devices out there and they should always fail to safe(off)
i type with one finger dude so yes im punching out a wopping 20 words or so per minute so its a fail to you for commenting about my typing speed without knowing the facts so ive just wasted another few of minutes to reply to your comment. FAIL to you for not knowing that everyone in this world is not as perfect as you seem to be!.
Lmao thanks for the random laugh:P

Anyone ever considered turning the water supply off and the power supply too?

Wow! I had no idea that could happen! What causes this to happen? Anything we need to know so we can avoid it?

The pressure relief valve didn't work.
The clothes must be soaking up water from the hole in the top of the heater.
I don't think that's a hole in the ceiling. I think the hot water spraying up there just blew off the popcorn coating.

Why does the ceiling show signs of the "blast" coming from above not where the water heater is below?
