Here's a little fact to chew on for all you apple loyalists/worshipers who hate Microsoft so much. The Mac OS X Kernel is based on the Mach kernel. The lead developer of the Mach kernel is Richard Rashid, a long time Microsoft employee. :D
Command+J brings up the view menu then chnge the sort type and hit the use defaults button, now all things auto arrange. also press enter and the you can rename something.

The only reason anyone would play around and make Windows look like OS X is basically because one can. And as far as I know there is no way to make OS X look like Windows. If it were possible, the first thing I would do is move the min/max/close buttons to the right hand side.
my only complaint in Macs are compatibility with programs, you can do anything in windows, but you miss out on a lot of very powerful programs with Macs, that's the fundamental difference

MAC's are for babies, for noobs, people that basically don't know how to use a computer. Windows 7 completely destroys MAC, I have both systems, and a hackintosh I made myself, no difference between the hackintosh and the 2,000 dollar rip off MAC i bought. Its just a rip off... I spent 350 dollars to make my hackintosh using the retail DVD. I never use the MAC anymore, Windows 7 just PWNZ
so im wrong? its not designed for people that dont know how to use a computer? Cuz every person so far that I know that has a MAC, says that very thing... they are computer/tech illiterate and use MAC because its easy to use and they cannot screw up with it. Guess im wrong... wait... :)
Macs are good for people hwo don't know how to use a computer because it's easy. Would you rather pick a very easy computer that's easy to use? Or a very hard computer that even if you do your best it will still look bad.
@junglemage666 Mac is simple to use but powerful, it runs on a UNIX based system. My friend is a software programmer and artist, he chooses OS X simply because of "Objective C" alone. The X Operating system self-contained applications and resource free work environment make it my OS of choice. I personally use it for software development on the iPhone. Windows is nice, pretty, lots of games, but it doesn't have that solid feel - I guess we all get to choose.....
"You never see anyone trying to make OS X look like Windows."
That's because you can't. God FORBID you try to tamper with Apple's sacred UI, and may he the Lord himself smite you should you try to modify... or unthinkably remove... the Apple logo.
They are definatly different, being in Windows I'm used to double clicking the title bar to maximize a window (or windows key and up arrow in windows 7). When I first used OS X when I double clicked the title bar it minimized :S
Guess its something I'll have to get used to that.
on os x leopard you can select the file you want to rename and press enter and then instead of opening it like it does on windows it brings up the rename thing like when you click wait and click.
Pressing the red x is pretty much hiding the window, no need for cmd+h, hence why just closing a window is better as it allows apps to run in the background. It's also the difference between the program (represented by the titlebar and dock icon) and the window, which represent the program contents. The controls on a window relate to the window (which seems obvious), so pressing the red x will close the window, and to close the program you use the dock or the titlebar. Simple : )
If you hit the + symbol (Zoom) your window can even went smaller. Thats because the zoom functionality is, that it may change the window for best viewing.

ok the diffrences are mac is for editing and making websites. windows is for video games and making websites and games. and linux is only for running the servers for video games. o and im thinking about getting vista. should i stay with xp or get vista for $100?
I actually switched from Windows to OSX, and don't regret it a bit. There are so many help full and use full tools built into the OS, which allows you to access them anywhere.
If this was not discussed, another obvious difference is how one clicks and switches between two or more apps which are located on the desktop. With Mac, you must click once only to activate that other app and then click AGAIN to input or effect the app. With Windows, just click on the other app and your instantly using that app. This always frustrates me when I use the Mac.
Im not gonna Lie, ive worked on Windows Vista and xp and ive worked on Mac tiger and leopard and honestly Windows is better OS X is good dont get me wrong but its just not there for me
Vista will be the end of Microsoft when it comes to the OS monopoly. No one accepts it, it doesn't run stable, people switch to Mac or Linux or downgrade to XP.
With XP being the rival, what will happen in the next years? They will be years of change, switch, boycott and ignore. There simply is no critical mass pro vista.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
God i hate people like you.
Vista is stable! It's just not stable when people try to run it with computer as old as 7 years old, of course it wont bloody work. The standard hardware of today can run Vista flawlessly.
It's a fact that Vista is more stable than XP, and i know this so dont say it isn't.
lol i have a 6 month pc (pre vista) and i installed vista and it's a piece of fucking shit. Lol pc fanboys said xp was bad, but now how bad vista is xp is suddenly like a god operating system when really it's just as bad.
Auto Arrange in Windows is Keep Arranged By in OS X. So, OS X *does* keep things arranged in the way specified (name, date modified, date created, size, kind or label)
I would switch, when i get a 2nd pc possibly. But i am not sure if it would work dual boot with Windows XP, also the problem for me is a i am a gamer and most games will not work with Mac.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Dual Boot wont work. Firstly a Mac doesn't have good hardware, such as a graphics card, which is the backbone of gaming. Also, it won't support the drivers
In regards to copy and pasting files that would rewrite another one. The Mac OS X does offer a bit more info about the file you intend to replace, if it's an old file, it will tell you its old, if it's new, it will tell you it's new, and personally, I think that's all one would need to know when over-writing files.
About the guys talking about Linux: there are bits of software that people have made that make Ubuntu look and feel like a mac-vista hybrid, but with some other added features that blow vista and mac away. I wont continue with windows for much longer, and I lost faith in mac.
ok Im using Ubuntu right now and while it looks nice. It takes ALOT of customizing and work to get it to. Vista and Leopard out of the box blow Ubuntu away (visualy). Oh and windowblinds is a hell of a lot more powerfull than having to use emerald and gtk. BTW most of compiz features are nice but serve no real purpose.
If you are talking about out of the box thing than yes, win and OS X is good. But if you know a little about linux, than Ubuntu is definitely batter. And yea, none of the "graphical" features are for real purpose...
I wonder why people ranked my previous comment as -6 ??
Why do people marked my previous comment as span comment? I am just giving my prospectus...u shouldn't mark it as bad just because I wrote against MAC and MS Win...
Sometimes, people don't have to use things in order to know they don't like them. Im a Xubuntu/XP user, mostly Xubuntu - mac is for people that don't know how/want to know how to work computers past the email/web-browsing/moving making level.
definately false, i know a lot about computers but just wanted something different, turns out my choice was for the best, i love my mac and i don't think i will ever go back to windows.
i only use windows but i also want to try osx too. window is what ive used for years and im happy with it but i want to learn new and better ways of doing things. i take the long way to make sure i get it right. im on a 5 year old dell now from my dad. i lent van my computer so she can learn to use one her friend is teaching her. basicly im looking for the best software and try them out in windows and mac version. still new to computers i am. and i dont know much about them.
Chris, to say you've been using OS X for awhile now, you still have a lot to learn. To rename a file, click it and press return (to open it press CMD-O). The Zoom button makes the window as large as it needs to/can be to display all the information in that window. "Hiding" has been in OS X for ages... I never minimize windows, just hide them, then bring them back by clicking on the apps icon in the dock when I need them.
to rename is osx leopard just click the icon and hit the return key. It lets you remane. Or double click the name you want to rename. Its really easy.
buff vista is horrible, programs are not responding, my laptop over-heats way too much, it gets slow as fuck when i open more than 2 programs at the same time.

If it's Linux, I WILL cry.
First of all, 'hacking' is just tweaking a computer.
It was all thanks to idiots who introduced the term 'hacking' as doing bad things to a computer.
Second, what do you do on this OS? Do you 'hack and infiltrate the ZX3V file system on the IN3X security system on the Pentagon?' I think not.
Learn to program - Then you'll be able to do some basic hacking.

I like mac os x alot, but when I use vista I never have trouble but macs are still better

I actually switched from Windows to OSX, and don't regret it a bit. There are so many help full and use full tools built into the OS, which allows you to access them anywhere.
basil0ad 4 years ago 2
If this was not discussed, another obvious difference is how one clicks and switches between two or more apps which are located on the desktop. With Mac, you must click once only to activate that other app and then click AGAIN to input or effect the app. With Windows, just click on the other app and your instantly using that app. This always frustrates me when I use the Mac.
johnseeley 4 years ago
well then yo have a problem, since you only have to click once and the job is done. And either way, its only a mouse click!

You are 1. a paid propaganda trollbot 2. a 9 year old kid with too much time 3. an idiot.
None of your claims have enough connection to the real world (yes, that does exist) to be referred to.
trakkaton 4 years ago 2
lol i have a 6 month pc (pre vista) and i installed vista and it's a piece of fucking shit. Lol pc fanboys said xp was bad, but now how bad vista is xp is suddenly like a god operating system when really it's just as bad.

Auto Arrange in Windows is Keep Arranged By in OS X. So, OS X *does* keep things arranged in the way specified (name, date modified, date created, size, kind or label)
bkire 4 years ago
I would switch, when i get a 2nd pc possibly. But i am not sure if it would work dual boot with Windows XP, also the problem for me is a i am a gamer and most games will not work with Mac.
NikolaAU 4 years ago
What's the problem?
Use bootcamp and you can have your pet XP for gaming.
Then you can play and have a real, stable, secure, virusfree, intuitive, nice OS.
If you stay with Windows you can play and that's it. Just hassle.
trakkaton 4 years ago

Dual Boot wont work. Firstly a Mac doesn't have good hardware, such as a graphics card, which is the backbone of gaming. Also, it won't support the drivers
t3h0ne91 4 years ago
Make sure you at least READ a post before "replying", trollbot idiot!

In regards to copy and pasting files that would rewrite another one. The Mac OS X does offer a bit more info about the file you intend to replace, if it's an old file, it will tell you its old, if it's new, it will tell you it's new, and personally, I think that's all one would need to know when over-writing files.

isn't the "zoom" thing to make the user see as much of the stuff in the window?

About the guys talking about Linux: there are bits of software that people have made that make Ubuntu look and feel like a mac-vista hybrid, but with some other added features that blow vista and mac away. I wont continue with windows for much longer, and I lost faith in mac.
Also, Linux is free. *PWN*

osx does have auto arrange, press apple, j, or go to veiw and press options, then go to "alwase arrange by-" and set how you want it arranged.

from my opinion, Ubuntu's interface is better than both, windows and OS X. Ubuntu rocks..and just add compiz to it, and you are above all...
I think Microsoft and Apple are 5 years behind than Ubuntu
brijeshchauhan 4 years ago
ok Im using Ubuntu right now and while it looks nice. It takes ALOT of customizing and work to get it to. Vista and Leopard out of the box blow Ubuntu away (visualy). Oh and windowblinds is a hell of a lot more powerfull than having to use emerald and gtk. BTW most of compiz features are nice but serve no real purpose.
TheBigBentley911 4 years ago
If you are talking about out of the box thing than yes, win and OS X is good. But if you know a little about linux, than Ubuntu is definitely batter. And yea, none of the "graphical" features are for real purpose...
I wonder why people ranked my previous comment as -6 ??

Sometimes, people don't have to use things in order to know they don't like them. Im a Xubuntu/XP user, mostly Xubuntu - mac is for people that don't know how/want to know how to work computers past the email/web-browsing/moving making level.

the things i like in windows:
resizing windows from any side
closing app when clicking "x"
but im an osx user and i love osx
DavidDude96 4 years ago 2
Chris, to say you've been using OS X for awhile now, you still have a lot to learn. To rename a file, click it and press return (to open it press CMD-O). The Zoom button makes the window as large as it needs to/can be to display all the information in that window. "Hiding" has been in OS X for ages... I never minimize windows, just hide them, then bring them back by clicking on the apps icon in the dock when I need them.

to rename is osx leopard just click the icon and hit the return key. It lets you remane. Or double click the name you want to rename. Its really easy.

I prefer Linux, but use XP. Never really tried a mac. Just couldn't get used to it when I did (years ago).

you should try a mac now. for about an hour. you will like it a lot, i love my mac. you might like it more than linux.
DavidDude96 4 years ago 2
Hey Chris, just curious, you said under OS X you can't easily rename the file.
Well, I don't know yet whether it's the same under Leopard, however, under Tiger you simply click the icon and then press enter to rename the file.
Cheers
