@Flamorgan The DC-10 didn't kill the Concorde, 9/11, 25 years of service, high fuel costs, AND net loss on airlines operting her cause her retirement.
@wowdude999 No it was the crash, because British Airways operated them profitably, the design was built to last and the aircraft had years and years left in them. The crash gave the impression that they were unsafe (lies) and the cost of updating them to prevent damage like that caused by the metal strip made them uneconomical. So the DC-10 is mostly to blame for Concorde's loss.
@sthill1993 Like I said....Rising fuel costs and 9/11 made her retire...BA/AF were starting to lose money in 1998. Sure the concorde crash was before 9/11, but their were signs of retirement before the crash.
@wowdude999 Concorde may not be profitable in terms of money, but in terms of pride, spirit and soul, she is priceless! Shame that we don't have those values anymore :(
@ghettoperson257 Wtf? Northwest airline was a shitty airline. It was a good thing Delta merged with them. Now all planes have PTVS which no NWA plane had (which is sad) And NWA used old shitty planes like this one and the 747-200. Shitty airline and the list goes on.
In 1990, I flew on a DC10 from Detroit to Amsterdam. They overbooked coach and I got a free bump to first class! We just leveled off at about 34,000 ft and I ask the attendant if she would ask the captain if I could see the flight deck. I did not expect he would agree, but 10 minutes later, she came back and took me up front. I sat in the observer chair all the way to the gate! The engineer put a set of headphones on my head. I remember every detail to this day. Those days are gone for good.
i flew with one allmost 10 years ago, since my flight home from detroit was cancelled due to bad weather in amsterdam it was in the red and grey colours
@andrewhurricane Actually, Northwest Airlines was firm in their commitment to McDonnell-Douglas and their entire fleet of DC-10 series aircraft, as they were operated regularly until reaching retirement in the year 2007. They were the last major US airline to operate them, behind ATA Airlines, which unfortunately ceased operations in 2008 due to bankruptcy.
@ruthiehensh The moment you said "Western", I knew you couldn't be an American! Why do pussy countries under the American thumb try to pathetically salvage their pride by calling themselves "Western" and thus, somehow, part of American global power.
You better get off your "Western" high horse real soon, or the "West" will have a lot more to be embarrassed about.
@ruthiehensh It most certainly is not. Better than that Eastern crap that they say flies. Now THATS embarassing. The DC-10 was one of the best planes to ever grace the sky. And, sir, they operated the DC-10 until 2007, for your information.
So many birds around that plane when it was taking off. Where was the bird control? So dangerous! Have they not learned anything after the US Airways birdstrike/hudson river incidient?
the MD-11 was 18' longer and larger overall, instead of GE's CF6-50 (51,000lb thrust) they used CF6-60C2 (747 engines) ( 61,200lb thrust). Basically the MD-11 was the larger version.
Nice Video! Love that sound! I just did some work at Dulles airport in DC and I got to drive right behind a fedex dc-10 every morning when I was escourted onto the tarmac. And saw him taxiiing for takeoff a few times. Very cool experience! Glad to see these old birds still flying every day!
@gloomyoutlook Death trap? Most accidents were caused by incorrect maintenance, pilot error etc. Since the cargo door problem was solved, the DC-10 has proved a reliable aircraft.
Didn't there used2 be a massive problem with the doors on these aircraft? The locking mechanism didn't used 2 lock the door properly during flight. the latch inside the door never used to grip the rasp properly and when the cabin gets pressurised the doors used 2 fly open during flight and crash. It happened a couple of times and it very nearly put the DC-10 out of it's life
I touched the landing gear, i went around under and next to this plane, actually the KC-10 Extender, but same difference. i did the same with KC-135 and C-5. for the c-5 i went in the cabin, cockpit abd everywhere.
Altitude, temperature, and wind direction are also factors. The older jetliners such as DC8s operating from high altitude airfields had take off rolls over a minute...
A heavily loaded plane (lots of fuel) will have a takeoff roll of 30-40 seconds. Planes that are lighter due to less fuel (shorter flight distances) will be in the mid 20s.
yes, but as you can see it had about 17 degree angle and the back wheels didn't take off so fast as usual. It took several seconds to unglue of the ground. That's why I think it was heavy loaded.
Regardless of the DC-10's history, it will always be my favorite airliner/cargo aircraft. The sound of the engines is practically trademarked by the DC and it is a remarkable sound at that!
There was only one DC 10 crash related to the cargo door. Paris Turkish Airline. One serious AA DC 10 incident over Windsor Ont. Same issue. Aircraft landed safely in Detroit.
the MD-11 was the predessor to the DC-10. Main differences include the increased fuselage length. Also the MD-11 featured a full 'Glass cockpit' a largely enhanced and more modern cocpit compared to the DC-10. It also does not have a flight engineer making the MD-11 only a 2 person flight deck. There are also other differences such as winglets, changes to the horizontal stablizer etc. There is also an MD-10 which is a DC-10 with a retrofitted glass cockpit.......
Although I cant tell what the tail number on this aircraft is, N244NW was one of my friends ;-) I've ridden on it countless times on my trips to Europe.
It was like flying in a cattle car. Everytime it landed in Amsterdam from Mpls it shook so bad and rained on me from the condensation on the ceiling. I quit flying NWA to Amsterdam until they got rid of those things and went to all A330 aircraft.
Oh yeah ??? watch the air crash investigation program . This plain had an error in cargo doors .Few of DC 10 crashed because of that , killing people .First please read something about DC10 or watch air crash investigation and then make a comments .

@ned987 in march of 2010, i was flying to atlanta on a 757 and our flight was late.when i saw that world airways dc-10-30 fly right past the terminal.thank go for my late flight.
Yep you gotta luv tri-holers. used to love seeing the Martinair and KLM MD11's alongside a bunch of NWA DC-10's at Amsterdam. miss those old birds. it would have been cool if they kept them and Delta kept them in there new colours. that would be the shit!!!! its all memories now
Nice post - those NWA -10's were my favorite plane to spot growing up - I'd always know when one was about to fly over my house by the distinctive "deep growl" of the engines. What a great plane - was sad to see them go.
very nice plane dont realy like the dc10 but the nwa colours they are nice . look at the wings you can almost see the bend from the wings bursting with jetfuel
very beautiful plane but i dont get why they added the extra engine on the tail because it doesnt seem any bigger than like a 757-767 and those are good with 2 engines
The 3rd engine allowed the plane to travel further distances and more distances over the ocean. Twin engined aircraft have to have something I think called ETOPS clearance to go across some of the oceans. The DC10 could do that. Also seated 230-260, far more than the 757 and 767.
Long takeoff run!

What a great plane - was sad to see them go.

very nice plane dont realy like the dc10 but the nwa colours they are nice . look at the wings you can almost see the bend from the wings bursting with jetfuel

very beautiful plane but i dont get why they added the extra engine on the tail because it doesnt seem any bigger than like a 757-767 and those are good with 2 engines

indeed a beautiful plane. the dc-10 came out many years before the 757 or 767 and was much wider body.

Well it had three engines instead of 2. The -10 was good, but I prefer the MD-11.

The 3rd engine allowed the plane to travel further distances and more distances over the ocean. Twin engined aircraft have to have something I think called ETOPS clearance to go across some of the oceans. The DC10 could do that. Also seated 230-260, far more than the 757 and 767.
