I cried watching this, OMG! her perfomance was so touching, and moving! :) I still can't believe she is gone, she was an amazing actress. Bea was truly an original, we will never see another actress like her again. I am sure Bea is in good company up in heaven with Rue and Estelle, LOVE ALL OF YOU GIRLS, :)
PURE MAGIC! what a very touching and honest performance! Bea you always made me laugh and always felt like part of my family on Golden Girls and Maude, thank you for being myand the world's friend. :)
Where did you find this? It's really sweet. I can't believe someone else "audio taped" MAUDE! I noticed that in another comment. Thank you for posting this. I'm waiting for TVLand to rebroadcast Maude, and the rest of the 5 seasons to come out on DVD.
I heartily agree with "dandolion"this is BY FAR the classiest, most moving of all the tributes to the touching but nevertheless side-splittingly hilarious Bea Arthur. Still brings in the laughs... but can't help feeling sad over the loss...
I can't express how much this woman has meant to my life. I grew up watching Golden Girls with my mom and my sister and have newly discovered Maude. My mother and sister have passed and now my children and i watch. I still can't get over the pain of Bea now being gone also ! Two pieces of my heart were taken with the deaths of my mother & Sister. And now a third is gone too. I remember you always Bea, and i mourn the great loss of you forever. U meant more to me than i can say....
Of all the tributes to her this is the best I have seen. BTW the song was from a musical that her husband had just directed "Home Again". The play was written by Humorist Russell Baker and the Music was by the wonderful composer Cy Coleman and the lyrics were by Barbara Fried. The song and the performance are a perfect choice. While other tributes have pretty songs they don't seem to fit her. Well done!
Bea Arthur was one of the few actresses who could play the characature of herself perfectly. Her sharp tongue and split-second wit made the world smile. Thank you for being a friend, Bea. We will miss you!
@seanisradd I don't know about download but if you can find the CD of of Bea Arthur's one woman show she sings it there as well. The song is "The Way I See It" and it is by Cy Coleman and is from the Musical "Home Again, Home Again"
Bea Arthur has a very distinctive voice, like Carol Channing. She is a wonderfil comic, and an even better singer. RIP Bea! And remember, you will always be my favorite "Golden Girl"!
I never realized how much of an influence she had on me until I heard she was gone.
On a personal note, when I was quite depressed and suffered from mono, what kept me going was my audio cassette recordings of MAUDE, which I recorded using my one speaker tape player and my small B&W tv with the antennae.
TRUE story, The force and strength she brought lifted me up and gave me courage.
Hi , the song is " The way i see it " by Cy Coleman and it s from " Home again , home again " . Thank you Ohbutyes , Bea Arthur s wonderful as always .
What a beautiful lyric, and so very appropriate for our beloved Bea to sing to us. Let's continue to sing and laugh in her memory, as she would want us to.
This is simply amazing. I have watched it now probably ten times. Thank you for making and posting this! I have never heard this song before - if anyone knows, please reply to this, message me, anything. I've got to know where this song came from. Part of me thinks it must have been written for her, maybe even just for this tv appearance.
No its not from Mame. I have tried looking this song up since I saw this video. If anyone finds the name, please post. I too am looking for this song. What a great song for a wonderful lady!
Thank you - I wish I had more clips to pull from for the montage, but I wanted to get it posted as soon as I could. I also miss when television had a less "in your face" style and showed a little more elegance in presentation - but at least people still appreciate shows like Maude and The Golden Girls, so all is not lost... Thank God for tape!
Thank you, ohbutyes, for sharing no only this and the great video of Bea Arthur, but all the other video you have uploaded to your You Tube channel.
They are just priceless pieces of our cultural history which, thanks to your generosity, I may now say are part of my video collection too.
Did you also do the editing of this Bea Arthur montage yourself? Because, if so, your talents would be sorely needed at one of the TV networks or syndicated magazine programs.
This song couldn't be more perfect! It's what Bea would have said: "Smile for me. Don't cry for me... Life is a comedy!" Or something like that. Perfect song.
I feel similarly about Bea Arthur, as I did & do about Lucille Ball and Bette Davis.
I actually came very close to meeting Lucy, as I attended the parade and ceremony (at Harvard University, of that school's prestigious theatrical society) at which Lucy received the Hasty Pudding Award for Woman Of The Year in 1988.
You may read my posted comments about that experience on one of the You Tube channels with video related to the death of Lucille Ball.
I still become emotional whenever I think of Lucy & that day.
We have truly lost so much great talent from this earth in the last two decades, and there is not much more left to lose of those greats from eras which shall never return.
Fortunately, thanks to film, audio & videotape (and now digital), we have preserved records of a lot of that talent. But there is still a deep void knowing these greats no longer live among us, may no longer bless us with new works.
What a great lady and great talent. Her comedy timing was one of the best. She naturally knew the beats to get a laugh and that she could, always get a laugh. I loved her. She reminded me of my mother, my mother had that type of personality especially the Maude character. You are loved Beatrice Arthur you are loved. And what an appropriate song on this video. Bea giving us advice for living. A great lady and talent.

I have not seen such skillful editing done on a TV network for something of this nature in a long time.
This is just the way TV used to commemorate & honor such legends!
Bravo, I say, bravo!

But I can't help but well up with tears. She was genuinely someone I wanted to meet in my lifetime.
