I have lived here all my life, and to this day I can't figure out why anyone would try to swim in the ocean without knowing how to swim. Why did the church group give him a boogie board to go and swim in the ocean that is only 50 F and which darn near every year people die? I am very glad the boy survived, but I have to question WHO let him almost die!!!!

Nicole Kissel is a beautiful girl who is a true hero. Ignoring her own safety she risks her own life for another. More adults need that kind of compassion and you are an amazing example of courage and love.

If we dont swim as hard as we can right now were going to die. By some miricle we made to shore, exhausted and shocked that we almost drown. Pissed off that the life gaurd was reading a book. and pissed that our parents wernt paying attention. I still thank god , he was the only one there for us that day.

wow, as a child about 12 years old me and my cousin were swimming at a beach, we got trapped in a nasty rip tide. neither of us knew what to do. so we tried and tried to swim against it. My arms were so tired I could barley feel them. My cousin kept trying to yell for help but was so weak every time he yelled his head would go under water, just barley treading on water. By some miracle I said im not dieing today. Got the biggest addrenalin rush ever grabbed my cousins arm and said

@bedtime420 The thing with the near shore currents here is that they eddie. The rip tide as you called it is a result of water coming over the large sand bars and then draining back out near the bottom and at the end of the sand bars. There are larger currents also from the Columbia River and the California Counter Current etc... You got lucky.
