This is very similar to what I did, except I went a bit further and drilled all the way through the black part so that the peg came out the other side, and push the plate up, as well as this: those two grey parts inside each hood piece that connect to the joining bar can actually serve as joints, but you have to cut extra plastic to free them up. It let's the hood split apart wider so it can come together without that uneven crash in the middle.

You can take it one step further and shave off part of the gray pieces inside his chest too to make them pivot.
