I am not sure how our whole chapter is responsible for these actions. The national headquarters are not entirely the ones that monitor the actions of each and every chapter. It is a chain of command from Nationals, to regions, then separated into provinces, and then chapters along with their institutions' policies on the manner. I mean that is like saying my son was murdered by a police officer's stray bullet in the United States and suing the president. It's dumb sue the department."Cornell"
I think the 25mil is more of a punishment than a retribution. For one it sets a precedent if she wins. Then hazing will have a price tag to it when things go wrong. Then second, it says "hey, this is wrong, and it's important you know how wrong it is." 25mil gets attention. It spreads the word. I'd wager that a significantly smaller amount would not garner the same attention. I say the mom deserves to win
Better quality minds would be better educated if this wasn't expected of your institutions. How is it possible for students of higher education to lack such fundamental knowledge?
This stiff is crazy, the shit the rugby club put me through at uni... I still have flashbacks. Don't think the mum shoudl get any money though. I knew I was putting myself through it, and I'd imagine so did he. Most people don't die, they just pass out and wish they were dead the next morning. Just my opinion though.
People who join frats are codependent and need to learn to take care of themselves. I dont need to be in a group and i can go along just fine as a individual in a college society.
These boys shouldn't be "punished" they should be thrown in prison where they belong, this was reckless endangerment at the least and homicide at the most.
@samiam2088 to jayar: consent is consent regardless of context & presumed to end the moment that you're not able to say "stop" or give some kind of signal (be it a safe word or dropping something/tapping out...SOMETHING agreed to before hand) & at a certain point being too drunk counts too.
If this had ended in sex, it's be rape, but when it ends in a DEATH the people involved aren't being brought up on ANY criminal charges?!
The "value to put on her kids life" should be enough to defund the entire fraternity. This sort of recklessness needs to be ended immediately, and it should be a lesson to other frats, if you engage in this behavior you are finished.
Kids are sooooo dumb. Its not there fault. Society teaches them that marijuana is evil. If they had tied him up and made him smoke doobies until he passed out..... He would wake up the next morning hungry as hell!
@eight18 I am a medical user in a medical state. I grow my own cannabis. No one died while I grew it. AND, if it was legal, people wouldn't be dying over it. Your comment is irrational and annoying. It proves how ignorant you are. If it was legal, would we need to buy it from out of the country? I'm going to block you now... I have no tolerance for your ignorance.
The topic of this story is death by OVERDOSE. It is NOT POSSIBLE to die from overdose on cannabis. End of story. There is no argument. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!
People die because the idiot American government is trying to protect big business. Oil companies, big pharma, lumber, tobacco, and alcohol companies ALL stand to loose a lot of money if marijuana and hemp are legalized. People die because of the black market and being forced to smuggle and protect it.
Fuck the money. Send to jail everyone who is responsible for at least 25 years and close down the fraternity for ever. Plain and simple.
And no Ana they are not kids... They go to fucking COLLEGE! A 3 years old is a kid. A 5 years old is a kid. A 10 years old is a kid. A 20 years old dude, is NOT a kid.
I'm not saying the mother did something wrong demanding that compensation
but what i do mean is this, is there actually a number in all of existence that would bring a parent to say, OK i forgive you for taking the life of my boy. because i cant think of one, and such an amount will never exist.
my heart goes out to this women and i wish her all the best.
@willghass Check the dictionary and any pronunciation sources. The root word "lay" is always pronounced "ley." If you pronounced it "Ly" or "LIE" you would be taking away the syllable string for the words 'lie' and 'lying' (not telling the truth).
@stunnaonflyrims I hate it when I have to explain difficult things to incompetent people but here I go: In this case focus on the reclining meaning of lay and lie. The important distinction is that lay requires a direct object and lie does not. So you LIE down on the bed (no direct object), but you LAY the book down on the table (the book is the direct object). If the student was LAYING there, he would have to lay something, like an egg(wrong). If he was LYING, he would be resting.
I think the mother should sue the fraternity for everything they have and I hope everyone involved is getting charged with murder (or manslaughter? I'm not too savvy on legal terminology).
@reactor4music I think in the us its hard to get alcohol due t the age restriction of 21. So if you want to party and et lots of sex in uni, you must be part of the frat. They supply booze right? In the rest of the civilised world we can get laid without getting girls drunk.. maybe our girls are just not as proodish
You can force someone to drink because you can know what their tolerance to alcohol is. Every one is different. What will kill one person might not kill another.
And this is not the local Junior College, this is Cornell, you would expect anyone able to get into Cornell to has some small shred of common sense.
Ana kept calling them kids... Oh they are just kids. I disagree. We have a uneven set on the concept of adulthood in this country. I think its safe to say 16+ can work and pay taxes but not vote. There have been times where people under 16 are tried in court as adults. I joined the Marines at 17. So are we adults at 16 or 18 or 21?
What happened to Matt was horrible and I hope his family wins this lawsuit and that those directly responsible are charged with atleast negligent homicide.
I never understood why anyone would want to be in a frat. I had good friends without one.
I'm hoping that she wins so maybe frats and sororities overall will either put an end to hazing or at least find some way to make sure it's safe. College is about having fun and drinking as much as it is about learning. I had a great time, and passed out my share of times. The important thing is to make sure there's moderation and at least a few sober people around as "caretakers" haha.
The problem is that people feel like they have to be accepted by drinking themselves stupid. I've been around 20 year olds that get drunk and sick so damn quickly and end up acting like morons whereas I just drink vodka and orange juice. Beer makes me act like a dumbass so i don't do it
And for some reason, marijuana is still illegal. Getting high is one of the most passive things you can do where you really don't do anything stupid other than eat and fall asleep
i thought Cornell is where smart people go... apparently this guy was a retarded dumbuck who put himself into a situation that any sane person would walk away from. That mom should be bitchslapped for raising such a fucking idiot who could not be more irresponsible
I totally agree that criminal charges need to be made in this case. It's horrible that a life was taken so tragically when it could have been so easily avoided if the fraternity had acted appropriately. It takes one frat (Sig Ep in the case) to do something so stupid but it takes all fraternities to act on and to draw a line between initiation practices and near death hazing.
Reading the comments below..fraternities and sororities are really not like this. Stories like these are extreme cases.
@tvinnakota I just don't see the point of frats OR sororities. Sororities are all fun until you do something that pisses off all of your "sorority sisters". Frats are literally overgrown teenagers who drink too much and shout out their frat name while they do stupid shit. College isn't for partying and drinking, and while everyone dabbles in it in college, why are people paying to get wasted and not graduate? It's ridiculous.
Just saying "their kids" does not excuse this. This is not something kids do. This is something a cult or a street gang would do. Fraternities are similar.
@cerritoboy Except for the fact that in America, the legal drinking age is 21. Most kids don't turn 21 until their 3rd or 4th year of college, so if they want booze, they have to go to stupid parties and events like this.
Hazing? Sounds like it is pretty serious hazing. These KIDS are 18 to 25 yrs old. If they had driven a car down a busy sidewalk would that be just kids acting up? Is date rape just kids acting up? No, this is criminal and should be treated as such.
Sigh I blame the victim because its his fault. No one forced him to join a frat. Its not like frats help in ANY WAY. Frats don't help with school work nor do they have better parties. This is ridiculous. Its the victims fault and they should just ban fraternities and sororities.
First, focus on criminal charges. Then, sue the organization for damages. Good luck, ma'am and let's send a message to sick control-freaks that they cannot act like this!
They should be put in jail. SAE just got kicked off our campus for similar reasons. In Michigan state law, whether or not the participant is willing is irrelevant, hazing is still illegal and very harshly punished. The chapter here tied people in mattresses and threw them off the two story roof among other things. People like that should be locked up for a long time.....
This is exactly why I despise college fraternities. In the older days they didn't do shit like this, and now it's rampant. You have to be a pretty weak-minded individual to submit to hazing simply for acceptance into some fascist group such as a frat house.
Suing for money is wrong you should not trying to profit from your sons death. If he was pressured into drinking it was his fault, if he had it poured down his throat its their fault. They should have taken him to hospital.
@xleezybee Right, guns don't kill people, people kill people! I won't comment further on the matter and I don't want the government doing anything more to try and limit alcohol, though it's just sad people find no problem with the mind-altering substance and lay the entire blame on the person who drank it. People are not as free willed as we have historically believed.
@uncoolnerd I am not really sure it is paying for friends. You can pay for friends like in any club. It is normal to join such organizations like that to meet friends & to meet men or& women. Nothing strange. Greek life is there, but just ignore it I think.
@MiloDaemon I think it varies depending on each states laws. I heard about some frat story about actually serving life in prison for 3rd degree murder. I think the state was Florida. For example there was this guy was pledging. He was supposed to drink till he got extremely buzzed then to swim across some river or body of water. The boy did and he drowned. He happened to also be wearing all clothing. He also died.
@MiloDaemon The president & the vice president was sentenced to full life in prison for assisting in murder and because they were of legal age 21 and the pledge boy was underage. So because the President & the VP were of legal consent they were considered adults and should of looked out for them of something like that. IDK.
@MiloDaemon There was also a similar case like this at Chico State, an university in the state of California. The pledge boy instead of drinking alcohol drank obsessive amounts of water beyond the acceptable. His body became really bloated and had a reaction.
@MiloDaemon He became fussing and vomiting and something of bubbles came up. Then he passed out. It was said that the spectators thought it was humorous and did not see anything wrong. The pledge boy actually died from brain swelling, body inflammation & lost the ability to circulate air or breathe. There death fell upon him. Well, these President VP were also prosecuted but not life sentence. That case was about 6 years ago.
@spartan5127v2 I think it is like a lifestyle of something. Plus people imagine it to be of higher elite people who caucus as with these people. Therefore putting them at a stature. It is mostly about imagine & popularity kind of things. IDK, of course more self-worth & dignity, but that was not the point. Humiliation is totally about the point. In secondary school till undergraduate. These things are ultimately for losers as they rely on these power suckers to feel better about themselves.
@spartan5127v2 mostly the idea that you'll hook up with sorority girls, but not all frats are equal. Even frats in one place are different in another campus. Students should be smarter than picking the ones where they haze. Or if they are in the mess, a) walk away, or b) call nationals and tell them there's hazing. Nationals are usually good about stopping bullshit.
@NOHANDBILLS I can't speak for everyone but obviously being in a frat is not for everyone. From personal experience, having grown up playing team sports all my life, being in a frat is much like being on a sports team. You're able to build strong comraderies because your teammates/frat brothers which can last a lifetime. Plus who the hell doesn't like frat parties? lol. If u went to college n did not enjoy frat parties, u missed out lol
@spartan5127v2 I think in the us its hard to get alcohol due t the age restriction of 21. So if you want to party and et lots of sex in uni, you must be part of the frat. They supply booze right.

Sigh I blame the victim because its his fault. No one forced him to join a frat. Its not like frats help in ANY WAY. Frats don't help with school work nor do they have better parties. This is ridiculous. Its the victims fault and they should just ban fraternities and sororities.
sikvenum82 8 months ago
It might be a little overboard but they really need to ban fraternities.
LilacStar82 8 months ago 4
@LilacStar82 The only problem with that is that they go underground and in that case they don't have any standards to uphold, which makes them worse.

Damn this is fucked up!!
heathwood83 8 months ago
First, focus on criminal charges. Then, sue the organization for damages. Good luck, ma'am and let's send a message to sick control-freaks that they cannot act like this!
mistacramer 8 months ago
They should be put in jail. SAE just got kicked off our campus for similar reasons. In Michigan state law, whether or not the participant is willing is irrelevant, hazing is still illegal and very harshly punished. The chapter here tied people in mattresses and threw them off the two story roof among other things. People like that should be locked up for a long time.....

I strongly condemn the actions of the fraternity, but I do not support the lawsuit, using the law in this way is how very bad precedents get started.
This should be a criminal matter, no money should change hands... or she should give all the money to charity.

Frats are full of losers with a lack of social skills and a god complex, I can actually make friends you fucking losers
pololoco89 8 months ago 2
This is exactly why I despise college fraternities. In the older days they didn't do shit like this, and now it's rampant. You have to be a pretty weak-minded individual to submit to hazing simply for acceptance into some fascist group such as a frat house.

Suing for money is wrong you should not trying to profit from your sons death. If he was pressured into drinking it was his fault, if he had it poured down his throat its their fault. They should have taken him to hospital.

Considering all the problems alcohol causes I don't know why there aren't more people speaking out against it...
DeJach 8 months ago
@DeJach it's not alcohol that's the problem it's the moderation.
xleezybee 8 months ago
@xleezybee Right, guns don't kill people, people kill people! I won't comment further on the matter and I don't want the government doing anything more to try and limit alcohol, though it's just sad people find no problem with the mind-altering substance and lay the entire blame on the person who drank it. People are not as free willed as we have historically believed.
DeJach 8 months ago
@DeJach well, people kill people with guns. well people should be held accountable for their actions.

Ah fuck, I should have warned this kid if I knew him. At my school SAE is known to be racist.
MRMAGIC305X 8 months ago
Isn't this considered manslaughter, if they forced booze down his throat?
rocospi 8 months ago
That's the problem, there will be no charges filed, "Boys will be boys. It's just young guys having some fun."

Greek life is a fucking disgrace. They sucker you into conforming and basically paying for friends. Worst part of college is greek life
uncoolnerd 8 months ago
@uncoolnerd I am not really sure it is paying for friends. You can pay for friends like in any club. It is normal to join such organizations like that to meet friends & to meet men or& women. Nothing strange. Greek life is there, but just ignore it I think.

...And uhm, how about some jail time for the murderers huh?
MiloDaemon 8 months ago
@MiloDaemon Yeah right. I don't understand why they should pay money. They should be punished under the law
ppxoon 8 months ago
@MiloDaemon I think it varies depending on each states laws. I heard about some frat story about actually serving life in prison for 3rd degree murder. I think the state was Florida. For example there was this guy was pledging. He was supposed to drink till he got extremely buzzed then to swim across some river or body of water. The boy did and he drowned. He happened to also be wearing all clothing. He also died.
kazakhstanmkj 8 months ago
@MiloDaemon The president & the vice president was sentenced to full life in prison for assisting in murder and because they were of legal age 21 and the pledge boy was underage. So because the President & the VP were of legal consent they were considered adults and should of looked out for them of something like that. IDK.
kazakhstanmkj 8 months ago
@MiloDaemon There was also a similar case like this at Chico State, an university in the state of California. The pledge boy instead of drinking alcohol drank obsessive amounts of water beyond the acceptable. His body became really bloated and had a reaction.
kazakhstanmkj 8 months ago
@MiloDaemon He became fussing and vomiting and something of bubbles came up. Then he passed out. It was said that the spectators thought it was humorous and did not see anything wrong. The pledge boy actually died from brain swelling, body inflammation & lost the ability to circulate air or breathe. There death fell upon him. Well, these President VP were also prosecuted but not life sentence. That case was about 6 years ago.

I've never understood the hype that surrounds fraternities.
Students should have more self worth and dignity than to submit themselves to humiliation just to get into a stupid frat.
spartan5127v2 8 months ago 150
@spartan5127v2 I think it is like a lifestyle of something. Plus people imagine it to be of higher elite people who caucus as with these people. Therefore putting them at a stature. It is mostly about imagine & popularity kind of things. IDK, of course more self-worth & dignity, but that was not the point. Humiliation is totally about the point. In secondary school till undergraduate. These things are ultimately for losers as they rely on these power suckers to feel better about themselves.
kazakhstanmkj 8 months ago
@spartan5127v2 People want to have parties I guess.
fnkyfreshT 8 months ago
@spartan5127v2 mostly the idea that you'll hook up with sorority girls, but not all frats are equal. Even frats in one place are different in another campus. Students should be smarter than picking the ones where they haze. Or if they are in the mess, a) walk away, or b) call nationals and tell them there's hazing. Nationals are usually good about stopping bullshit.
CitizenofDystopia 8 months ago
@spartan5127v2 Because college girls are dumb and will easily have sex with frat bros

@spartan5127v2 frats are stupid. i almost joined one cuz the dudes weren't dicks, but it still wasn't worth the money.

and ana's right about the potential violence. i go to uconn, and we have had quite a few violent crimes over the past 3 years.
MrBigSkizz 6 months ago
@spartan5127v2 im guessing u were never in a frat?
06demeti 6 months ago
@06demeti what are the benefits of being in a frat? convince me that that type of lifestyle is so much better then mine. Go.
NOHANDBILLS 6 months ago
@NOHANDBILLS I can't speak for everyone but obviously being in a frat is not for everyone. From personal experience, having grown up playing team sports all my life, being in a frat is much like being on a sports team. You're able to build strong comraderies because your teammates/frat brothers which can last a lifetime. Plus who the hell doesn't like frat parties? lol. If u went to college n did not enjoy frat parties, u missed out lol
06demeti 6 months ago
@spartan5127v2 I think in the us its hard to get alcohol due t the age restriction of 21. So if you want to party and et lots of sex in uni, you must be part of the frat. They supply booze right.
