@marconehilton dude where the hell did the HIV part come from? I was talking about his ability to defend against other players you idiot, where in my statement was anything HIV related?? Magic was a very bad defender, he couldn't even get on the all defensive team at all during his career. That alone is a reason as to why he's definitely not the second best player behind Jordan. Kobe is better then Magic and I absolutely hate Kobe.
@OldSchoolECW Well, I obviously misunderstood you, I'm sorry. But since I can't make you agree with the fact that Magic IS CONSIDERED THE 2ND BEST (maybe along with Bird, but deal with it), maybe I can make you be less angry at me: I'm a Lakers fan, and I also hate Kobe. He is NOT even close to the 10 best ever.
@marconehilton I was never angry at you. Why should I be? It's an opinion, and this is a debate, something i enjoy doing (although the idiot part was unecessary on my part, and for that I apologize). I never really denied that Magic is "considered" the second greatest, but I honestly think that's just utter bullshit.
@marconehilton just the fact that you just tried to say that Magic was as good as Pete gives me every reason to not take you seriously. Yes, Magic was better at getting his teamates involved, I was never denying that, but once again, I guarantee you most of his assists would have never happened if it wasn't for his height. That's why I mentioned his height in the first place. I've seen many lakers games involving him, clearly you haven't watched a single one.
@OldSchoolECW If height was an attribute so important in Johnson's career, he would be a greater scorer, taking advantage of his height to shoot over the lower players. But no. He made his entire career on making his teammates do that job, by watching their positions and choosing the best pass option. Does that really have anything to do with his height?
@marconehilton Yes it does. In documents about Magic, many people have pointed out that his height was one of the biggest assets he had with his style because he was so easy for him to find open teammates and it was hard for people who were guarding him to cut off his passes. And he probably wouldn't be a great scorer if he wanted to be one. He wasn't the best shooter and like I said his dribbling wasn't the best either.
@marconehilton Height can help out a lot with scoring, but more things are needed in order for someone with height to make a big impact against the opposing team. Magic didn't have that ability. I'm not saying he's bad, but compared to other great point guards, his offensive ability looks like utter shit.
@marconehilton All of his flashy passes and abilities to run the fast break well had a lot to do with his height. If you honestly don't think that then you know absolutely nothing about the game. And also the fact that you said Magic had as much skills at Pete proves you know absolutely nothing. He never had anything close to what Pete had. Pete is considered one of the best ball handlers of all time, he blows Magic out of the water in terms of that and shooting.
@marconehilton If Magic wasn't a 6'9 point guard, then him playing center would've been a lot more impressive than it sounds.
And your honestly telling me that a guy who only got triple doubles only because of his height, had a huge height advantage over most of his opponents, and couldn't defend to save his life is the second greatest NBA player in history? You don't deserve to be taken seriously. One of the best Pg's? Yes. But not one of the greatset players ever, not even close.
@shutthefrontdoor4321 he had skills as a point guard from very young, but then he grew to 6 foot 9 in his growth spurts. His skills were so good though as a point guard that they couldn't be ignored.
Magic was a 20-year-old rookie when he won this championship and Finals MVP. He couldn't even legally drink champagne to celebrate, as the commentators pointed out when he won this game.
This should be #1. Are you kidding me? MJ had a great performance in that Game 6 against Utah in 1998, but that GW shot was a clear pushoff and that took away a bit of its luster. When Magic had this 42-15-7 Game 6 at PHILLY, WITHOUT KAREEM, the MVP I might add, he was so young he couldn't even have champagne with his team. A 20-Year-Old did this for L.A. I know Kobe's better scorer, but Magic is the Greatest Laker of All Time. He was so versatile and physically and mentally gifted on the court.
And so began the greatest dynasty ever in the NBA. Not the most dominate, that would be the Celtics of the 50's and 60's but the best dynasty. Seed those laker championship teams 1 thru 5 and put them up against any other team's 5 best ever and the Laker's take from 3 to 5 of those series depending on who it is.
Wow....Philadelphia could have had all 4 Teams win it all in their respective sports in 1980. Flyers lost the Stanley Cup Finals, Sixers lost to the Lakers in the Finals, Phillies Win the World Series, and the Eagles lose the Super Bowl
Amazing but Jordan hit A CHAMP WINNER. that doesn't even sound normal cuz it's that amazing. All due respect to magic though, he's the greatest laker of all time!!
Anyone know what Magic's stat line that night was? I see 42 pts, 15reb, 7ast... but what about the rest of the line - steals, blocks, %'s, 3PM, how many times he made it to the line?
This is #1??? someone must be playing a joke... a simple shot from the top of the key is better than a rookies 42pt, 15 reb performance in the Finals when he is playing in place of the injured MVP. That is funny, someone change the #2 to a #1 please the joke is over.
@bdownbear1 not tryna be mean but players in nba right are surpassing the "GReatest" i do aree with ur comment but you might not know that Lebron is better
@jstafford81 Absolutely Lebron = Lehype. By his 8th season, Magic had I think 5 rings. Lebron has zilch. For anyone who has watched basketball for more than 10 years, this should be obvious!
@indifferenz What? Lebron is hype but most of it is justified. The guy is putting up stats we haven't really seen since MJ. Lebron also didn't have Kareem, Worthy, Byron Scott, Michael Cooper, and Pat Riley as a coach. Just saying. Magic is better for sure, but don't be a hater.
@boredfun91 lebron is the man but yeah nothing compared to magic and the biggest part of being great is doing it in the playoffs and finals consistantly
You don't even deserve a response, so that's for free: when other player make, in his rookie season, 42 points playing in a different and unnatural position (PG playing as Center? Come on!), you call me.
Until there, accept that Michael Jordan is the only player above Magic.
@marconehilton Am I denying that he was great? No I'm not, he's easily the best all time when it comes to assists, but once again that's only because of his height. There's a difference between being a great basketball player and being a good player who uses what he has to advantage. Shaq is a perfect example of this. There's a reason people consider Pistol Pete to be one of the greatest PG's ever, because he was a true PG with the skills a PG needs. All magic had was height. Nothing more.
@OldSchoolECW So those flashy passes n pushing the fast break, all do to height? Magic had just as much skills as Pistol Pete. I understand your looking at it, as if Magic having an advantage, but look how quick n fast he was.Height has nothing to do with that, Look at Lebron he is 6'8 260, n is one of the fastest in the league, also look at Sir Charles he was 6'4 playing power foward, plus look at Rodman 6'7 lead the league in rebounding 7 times aginst Shaq.
@OldSchoolECW So, his courage, tenacity, intelligence, strength of will and, specially, his LEADERSHIP was thanks to his height? Wow, you really master the game, I'm sorry. Again: BITCH, PLEASE! Pistol Pete was a remarkable player, but he was unable to make his average companions better - the most important skill Magic had. Or do you really think Scott, Worthy and Rambis would be the same without Johnson? You probably never saw a single Lakers' Showtime game. Grow up.
The lakers have got to be the luckiest franchise in the history of sports, they go from Abdul-Jabar to magic to Kobe, is there an era where they didn't win a finals?
Nope I think Jordans 63 is more impressive then this except that the Bulls didn't win that game. Jordan made 3 critical plays in his final shot. Scoring fast to bring them within 1 point, stripping Malone and then scoring his final shot to seal the deal for his last shot as a Bull and more importantly to win the 6th title. Now thats amazing.
@696969Brian696969 Yeah, but keep in mind... Magic was a ROOKIE in this video. What did Jordan do in his rookie year? Hell, what did Jordan do in his first SEVEN years? He couldn't even make it out of the Eastern Conference.
@fallendh94 Kareem had exactly zero rings as a Laker in the half decade before Magic showed up. And in this game, Magic only started at center in Kareem's place, and dropped a 42-15-7 in the deciding game of the NBA finals, as a ROOKIE. Jordan is the greatest 2-guard, sure, but they were marketing him as the greatest ever before he even showed up in the finals, so I frankly never bought it. To me, Russell's the greatest player ever until someone wins 12.
yeah well - who had pippen rodman horry grant cartwright? Those bulls teams were stacked. They had 3 of the best players in the league every year and sometimes 4. Along with the best coach of all time? I mean Harper and Kukoc Kerr and Parish??? C'mon that's serious firepower.
Hey not takin nothing away from jordan but it's a myth he had to carry those teams on his back. But Magic DID have to carry the Lakers on his back in that game
@nextbestrockstar Jordan had the most talent and will to win of any 2-guard at least, maybe anyone ever, but he was a poor teammate for his pre-Phil career -- sure, he made the Bulls the franchise of the 90s but he showed up in '84. Kareem and Wilt are at the top of the argument for most talented centers but Kareem was aloof and Wilt was a horrible teammate. Magic and Bird had the will and were great teammates but weren't as talented as Jordan. Russell is the one guy who put it all together.
@StiltMonster ya. The difference is pretty plain great coach great teams, lousy coach, lousy teams that may get to the playoffs but won't get it done.
If contemporary players are "better" and "more athletic," why is it that Ginobili travels almost every time he drives to the basket, taking at least two steps off the dribble? Why is it that Wade consistently palms the ball as he switches from right to left? Why is it that Kobe cries foul every time he takes a shot? And so on, and so on. Players today may be bigger and stronger, but they can't hold a candle to guys like Magic and Bird.
The greatest single playoff performance in playoff history. A freakin point guard starting at center replacing Kareem of all people. The result? 42 points 15 rebounds 7 assists for the whole enchalada!
Oh yeah Magic was still a rookie btw.
Jordan is the GOAT but one shot where he pushes off to create the space for was not a greater playoff moment than what Magic did in this game.
man that's exactly right!! You'd see that get whistled on Drexler Barkley Reggie - - anybody else would get a foul. But not jordan. Anybody can shoot an open shot when they shove the defender down
jordan pushed off like that for YEARS never got called.
@cbnunya yeah..... maybe it's a good thing after all to enforce the rules? how can the ref make a good judgement call about a push when everybody pushes off and it's kinda legal?
This shows you how bad the talent was back then. When a rookie can go into the league and win the finals MVP. Yeah now a days that would never happen. Athletes are so much stronger and faster. If bron bron played with these guys he would score 80 each game. I don't blame them though sports science is so advance now. Converse come on!!!
Not taken anything from them bro, they are the legends. I was just saying now a days they are more athletic which you obviously agree on. It was a different time Duh!!! I did misuse talent though.
I will give you James is a beast, but Magic is one of the best players of all time. How many guys could carry his team to the title after the MVP of the league and team leading scorer (Jabbar) goes out?
Magic stat line for this game 42 pts 15 reb 7 ast not bad....
Since you're obviously ignorant and seem to think athleticism means everything, I'll paraphrase something Chick Hearn once said.
"You think Dr. J or Michael Jordan are that much more athletic than players back in the '60s? Are you kidding me? I WATCHED Elgin Baylor doing things back then that I've still never seen a player nowadays do."
People who never watched them season after season underestimate guys like Bird, Magic, Moses or Hakeem. If you saw what Hakeem did to Shaq, you'd understand.
@66paintrain Talent is NOT the same as athleticism and sport science. You play basketball with your head and hands, not with a super pumped up body. LeBron is a phenomenom, no doubt. But you can't possibly claim that the NBA has more talent nowadays, just because the dunks are getting higher and harder every year.
I'm 5’7 white and can dunk. Wtf you mean white guys can’t jump? It's just about the training people do to get their jump to be strong enough to dunk. For me, I personally used the training program over at snipurl[dot]com/nbatraining
Awesome. Even though I wasn't alive yet, I saw this in the Lakers Dynasty DVD and thought to myself this is a living legend. Lakers forever. I liked them immediately when I saw Shaq. 7 year abscense and we win again. 15 baby!
@nbafreak41 During Magic's rookie year the Lakers lost game 5 of the Finals and Kareem sprained his ankle bad. So I went and got tickets for game 7 because I knew the Lakers would lose to the 76ers without Kareem in game 6. Well 42 pts, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists later, by a rookie in the Finals, I was able to get a refund for my tickets. :-( This feat was more amazing then Jordan's shot against Utah. This was a rookie, sans their MVP center, that won the game. Jamaal Wilks scored 37.
You are missing my point, we are talking about (A) MOMENT or MOMENTS. We aren't talking about a game in it's entirety, that's a different standard. You mix it yourself when talking about Reed, the clip is about Reed coming on to the court injured and playing. End of moment. No consideration should be given to what he scored or how many blocks he had, the moment is the fact that he took to the court. MJ showing up and losing a tap being ratedasnumber2inthehistoryofthegame,letBillRussellpick them.
If you want to use the literal meaning of "moment", I understand your point completely.
However, I don't consider the term "moment" so literally. I consider it in this context to mean "event" and in this case, Magic starting for Kareem and his play in that game was an important event in NBA history.
Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals did not have a lot of moments but the event it self was significant.
1962 playoffs. Fourth consecutive title, game 7, upstart Lakers, led by Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. His rebound of Frank Selvy's missed jump shot preserved a 100-100 tie at the end of regulation, and Celts win a 110-107 victory in overtime. Russell cried in the locker room. He had amassed 30 points and 40 rebounds. No other player has ever had more than 38 rebounds in a Finals game. That rebound was a moment. A man that was spit on because he wasblack
I still think his best moment was going out on top in 1969. That '69 Lakers team was stacked but DON'T EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE HEART OF A CHAMPION. Player, coach, legend. Bill Russell goes away a winner.
Not to be forgotten was Sam Jones also retiring after that game.
Magic wasn't 6'10", he was 6'8 'n' a half or 6'9 tops. Look at images of him standing side by side w/ James Worthy who was/is a legit 6'9-10". Big Game is noticeably taller.
Also, I've been around Magic a few times at games, restaurants and other events. His wingspan is deceptively long. I'd guess his arms stretch longer than his 6'8-9" frame.
Oh no doubt ace, Magic would be a big guard in any era, especially the way he loved to get on the block and post up. I was just commenting on the details of his height.
Not directing the following at you, ace, but I notice hoops fans nowadays often underestimate how BIG many old school players played. Adrian Dantley and Charles Barkley weren't very tall for their positions, yet they could post up MUCH taller/bigger opponents. Ditto Magic, he was unguardable on the block.
I think this belongs at #1 because of the completeness of the performance, the importance of the game, the quality of the opponent and the fact that he did this on the road as a rookie. Not only did he play all those positions on offense but he was defending several positions on the other end. Just an all-around gem with the championship on the line.
yeah i thought it was the greatest individual performance ever. but u know they wasnt gonna put that above michael jordans career game winning shot in the finals. i mean come on lol
Yeah but it's Jordan and just the whole shot. His wave goodbye to basketball. The clutch steal earlier and he won that game without Scottie Pippen because of an injury.
Kareem in that moment was what Jordan was in the 90's and Magic said, don't worry guys "Magic" is here, and don't forget it was his rookie season, then... 42 pts, 15 rbs and 7 assists to win the champs... that's the biggest ever, simply Magic
No number one should have been Magic Johnson's hook shot over the celtic defenders. Classic clutch. No doubt Mj has the better overall playoff performances though
eh, Jordan has to be number 1 because it seems he has to be the #1 in every nba category. I feel that this moment and willis reed were significantly better playoff moments than the #1 choice.
Hell, Jordan's sick game woulda been a better #1 choice.

I understand your looking at it, as if Magic having an advantage, but look how quick n fast he was.Height has nothing to do with that, Look at Lebron he is 6'8 260, n is one of the fastest in the league, also look at Sir Charles he was 6'4 playing power foward, plus look at Rodman 6'7 lead the league in rebounding 7 times aginst Shaq.
air45rose 1 week ago
@OldSchoolECW So, his courage, tenacity, intelligence, strength of will and, specially, his LEADERSHIP was thanks to his height? Wow, you really master the game, I'm sorry. Again: BITCH, PLEASE! Pistol Pete was a remarkable player, but he was unable to make his average companions better - the most important skill Magic had. Or do you really think Scott, Worthy and Rambis would be the same without Johnson? You probably never saw a single Lakers' Showtime game. Grow up.

The lakers have got to be the luckiest franchise in the history of sports, they go from Abdul-Jabar to magic to Kobe, is there an era where they didn't win a finals?
nextbestrockstar 1 year ago
This is why Magic is the greatest Laker of all time.
crazytgi 1 year ago
The single greatest performance in the history of the NBA finals. Placing Jordan's shot above this is an absolute joke on so many levels.
DrNeb 1 year ago 4
@DrNeb
696969Brian696969 1 year ago
@696969Brian696969 Yeah, but keep in mind... Magic was a ROOKIE in this video. What did Jordan do in his rookie year? Hell, what did Jordan do in his first SEVEN years? He couldn't even make it out of the Eastern Conference.
StiltMonster 1 year ago 4
@StiltMonster ok but who had fucking jabar and a whole bunch of other players umm magic did magics great but jordans the greatest
fallendh94 1 year ago
@fallendh94 Kareem had exactly zero rings as a Laker in the half decade before Magic showed up. And in this game, Magic only started at center in Kareem's place, and dropped a 42-15-7 in the deciding game of the NBA finals, as a ROOKIE. Jordan is the greatest 2-guard, sure, but they were marketing him as the greatest ever before he even showed up in the finals, so I frankly never bought it. To me, Russell's the greatest player ever until someone wins 12.

@fallendh94
yeah well - who had pippen rodman horry grant cartwright? Those bulls teams were stacked. They had 3 of the best players in the league every year and sometimes 4. Along with the best coach of all time? I mean Harper and Kukoc Kerr and Parish??? C'mon that's serious firepower.
Hey not takin nothing away from jordan but it's a myth he had to carry those teams on his back. But Magic DID have to carry the Lakers on his back in that game
Vstrat0 1 year ago
@StiltMonster i blame the team for that. what was the bulls before jordan? he made them the franchise of the 90s. Magic was on a storied lakers team.
nextbestrockstar 1 year ago
@nextbestrockstar Jordan had the most talent and will to win of any 2-guard at least, maybe anyone ever, but he was a poor teammate for his pre-Phil career -- sure, he made the Bulls the franchise of the 90s but he showed up in '84. Kareem and Wilt are at the top of the argument for most talented centers but Kareem was aloof and Wilt was a horrible teammate. Magic and Bird had the will and were great teammates but weren't as talented as Jordan. Russell is the one guy who put it all together.
StiltMonster 1 year ago
@StiltMonster ya. The difference is pretty plain great coach great teams, lousy coach, lousy teams that may get to the playoffs but won't get it done.
Here's to Phil Jackson the Great
Vstrat0 1 year ago
If contemporary players are "better" and "more athletic," why is it that Ginobili travels almost every time he drives to the basket, taking at least two steps off the dribble? Why is it that Wade consistently palms the ball as he switches from right to left? Why is it that Kobe cries foul every time he takes a shot? And so on, and so on. Players today may be bigger and stronger, but they can't hold a candle to guys like Magic and Bird.
mythcrusher 1 year ago
The greatest single playoff performance in playoff history. A freakin point guard starting at center replacing Kareem of all people. The result? 42 points 15 rebounds 7 assists for the whole enchalada!
Oh yeah Magic was still a rookie btw.
Jordan is the GOAT but one shot where he pushes off to create the space for was not a greater playoff moment than what Magic did in this game.
I rate performances higher than single plays.
YogiBear13 1 year ago 3
@YogiBear13
man that's exactly right!! You'd see that get whistled on Drexler Barkley Reggie - - anybody else would get a foul. But not jordan. Anybody can shoot an open shot when they shove the defender down
jordan pushed off like that for YEARS never got called.
Magic has the top game maybe of all time.

I forget how many rings has "bron bron" won?
I will give you James is a beast, but Magic is one of the best players of all time. How many guys could carry his team to the title after the MVP of the league and team leading scorer (Jabbar) goes out?
Magic stat line for this game 42 pts 15 reb 7 ast not bad....

Edd1e8 1 year ago
Since you're obviously ignorant and seem to think athleticism means everything, I'll paraphrase something Chick Hearn once said.
"You think Dr. J or Michael Jordan are that much more athletic than players back in the '60s? Are you kidding me? I WATCHED Elgin Baylor doing things back then that I've still never seen a player nowadays do."
People who never watched them season after season underestimate guys like Bird, Magic, Moses or Hakeem. If you saw what Hakeem did to Shaq, you'd understand.
maxedwell 1 year ago 2
@66paintrain Talent is NOT the same as athleticism and sport science. You play basketball with your head and hands, not with a super pumped up body. LeBron is a phenomenom, no doubt. But you can't possibly claim that the NBA has more talent nowadays, just because the dunks are getting higher and harder every year.

only reason lakers won was cuz of their great team but their a good team who can cooperate
the1sin 2 years ago
@nbafreak41 During Magic's rookie year the Lakers lost game 5 of the Finals and Kareem sprained his ankle bad. So I went and got tickets for game 7 because I knew the Lakers would lose to the 76ers without Kareem in game 6. Well 42 pts, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists later, by a rookie in the Finals, I was able to get a refund for my tickets. :-( This feat was more amazing then Jordan's shot against Utah. This was a rookie, sans their MVP center, that won the game. Jamaal Wilks scored 37.

I don't get it?? Where is the moment? That MJ stepped in to play center? And that's number two in the history of the league? Not sure here folks...
goinggrayearly 2 years ago
Magic changed the history of the league by showing that big men (6'10" guys) can play point. This is definitely a defining moment.
Still, doesn't deserve to be higher than Bird in '87.
One that should be lower is Willis Reed's Game 7 walk. So overrated. Willis came back to score 4 points in Game 7.
ace11rothstein 2 years ago 3
You are missing my point, we are talking about (A) MOMENT or MOMENTS. We aren't talking about a game in it's entirety, that's a different standard. You mix it yourself when talking about Reed, the clip is about Reed coming on to the court injured and playing. End of moment. No consideration should be given to what he scored or how many blocks he had, the moment is the fact that he took to the court. MJ showing up and losing a tap being ratedasnumber2inthehistoryofthegame,letBillRussellpick them.
goinggrayearly 2 years ago
If you want to use the literal meaning of "moment", I understand your point completely.
However, I don't consider the term "moment" so literally. I consider it in this context to mean "event" and in this case, Magic starting for Kareem and his play in that game was an important event in NBA history.
Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals did not have a lot of moments but the event it self was significant.
ace11rothstein 2 years ago
Where is Bill Russell's G'est moment?
1962 playoffs. Fourth consecutive title, game 7, upstart Lakers, led by Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. His rebound of Frank Selvy's missed jump shot preserved a 100-100 tie at the end of regulation, and Celts win a 110-107 victory in overtime. Russell cried in the locker room. He had amassed 30 points and 40 rebounds. No other player has ever had more than 38 rebounds in a Finals game. That rebound was a moment. A man that was spit on because he wasblack
goinggrayearly 2 years ago
I still think his best moment was going out on top in 1969. That '69 Lakers team was stacked but DON'T EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE HEART OF A CHAMPION. Player, coach, legend. Bill Russell goes away a winner.
Not to be forgotten was Sam Jones also retiring after that game.
ace11rothstein 2 years ago
dude this is only number 2
the1sin 2 years ago
@ace11rothstein
I'd guess his arms stretch longer than his 6'8-9" frame.
maxedwell 1 year ago
@maxedwell, but you agree that Magic would be classified as a big man using an 80s definition, right?
ace11rothstein 1 year ago
@ace11rothstein

GoingOn9Lives 2 years ago
eh, Jordan has to be number 1 because it seems he has to be the #1 in every nba category. I feel that this moment and willis reed were significantly better playoff moments than the #1 choice.
