I had a punkish girlfriend; middle class girl, me skinhead working class, good times, good memories of my teenage years.

back then every where you turned there was eaither a punk, or there was a show. now everyone is hidden.
A wonderful vid by Lindsey Clennell, who did lots of vids for the Stranglers, and now teaches yoga in NYC. "Strange" tells the story very economically, and, yeah, the girl is interesting, as is the whole London scene depicted. Vid first aired July 1982.
Didn't think the Starnglers would get involved in the whole token fashion punk thing. The two sections in the vid don't sit comfortably with one another, the band is far too cool!
Well I'm over 45 and I kind of agree. The visuals here are about 5 years too late. By 1982 this was passe already. The girls in the video don't look very interesting, let alone strange. Now if this were a video from a song on their first album, in 1977, it might have made more sense. I also think The Stranglers were too cool for the hollow hair and makeup scene.
This is an awesome song...unfortunately, I don't ever remember hearing this played in the U.S. when I was growing up. Did the Stranglers have much presence in America?
Nope! probably something to do with burnin the flag and suggesting americans have smaller brains and being anti american in 1977. However Hugh has softened his stance towards the USA these days.
It was a naieve stance and clearly meant to be provocative which was all part of punk in 1977 to attack institutions and corporate giants like Ford. The Stranglers would provoke responses and take up causes such as the rights of prisoners or wind up the GLC and BBC. No one was spared so I don't think there was a particular hatred for the states just that they were into the european thing back then. These were not my views but shows how PUNK they were.
Almklit, thanks again for your thoughtful post. I am often torn with many American entertainers as well, who are very talented, but very wrong (in my opinion) regarding world policy. But I still can appreciate the Stranglers for their great talent. Truthfully, we do need more folks like you in America these days :)
paypartyguy. Well the 80's we're good times mostly. The pound was strong, (oil revenue) I remember going over to France in 83, and you could buy 3 of their beers for £1.40. This record reminds me of a bird on a bus travelling up to Burnley from Wiltshire, she was stunningly beautiful and I got chatting to her, and wanted to know her more, but of course we parted when the journey ended, "Strange little girl where are you going, do you know where you could be going. With me I wished.
OK I'm too young to be alive when this came out, but I really think early 80's Britain must have been great. The fact that the country was crap made people more imaginitive, just look at the originality of the punk fashions, and music.
The stranglers have had some real belters, but this makes a welcome downbeat change - and is really emotional.
Try walking down the street with this on yer iPod and not walk-dancing funny.
In a word - musically revoloutionary (yea, that's 2, I know).
