Wow, this gives him even more greatness! It's so difficult to be a late starter in this field for many reasons and yet he made it better than many kid starters!!! I've always wanted to find/hear about accomplished late starters in the violin field. An exemple of courage for all!

Were these serenades composed before or after the Violin Concerto? A lot of these two serenades sounds like early attempts at using elements that make Sibelius' Violin Concerto so incredible.

The serenades were composed in 1913, eight years after the final version of the Violin Concerto. Incidentally, another YouTube user, Numboss, is posting the six Humoresques (Opp. 87 & 89) to YouTube. These gems date from 1917 & are among Sibelius' most dazzling pieces for violin & orchestra; sadly, they're rarely heard. The Two Serious Melodies (Cantique & Devotion), Op. 77, are also on YouTube.

An interesting note: some of the humoresques were based on ideas for the unfinished second violin concerto.

I had forgotten about that. Do you think Sibelius wanted to stay with tradition and leave just a single definitive violin concerto, as did Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky?

I agree with you that the Sibelius Violin Concerto is best. There are many actors available, but look for the old recording from 1965 with Christian Ferras and Berliner with Karajan. That`s still an amazing recording. Believe me - forget the younger onces! Enjoy your listening!

What a lucky break for us that Sibelius never made the grade at conservatory to become a concert violinist. Otherwise, he might have become a professional virtuoso & might never have found the time to compose so many wonderful masterpieces.
