Modern art is videogames. And videogames are predominantly not about the everyday, they are about fantasy, often fantastical versions of history, but more often straight fantasy. Just wanted to point that out.

Also, if the point of impressionism was to be realistic, then why use the less realistic form of rendering, the choppy visible brush strokes?

@Jcolinsol As Collings points out at the beginning, societies have different definitions of "reality." The Impressionists were radical in that they were looking for a reality beyond the surface but still based on vision and observation.
