  • Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • He was just 19 YEARS OLD!??!

  • Adam pettys wreck was a fluke just like dales i mean they did have the hans device in 2000 and 01 but it wasnt mandatory there fault they didnt wear it

  • He had such a bright future - that was the second death of the year.

  • He obviously didn't have his grandfathers' incredible death defying luck during hellacious crashes...

  • Adam was on his way! I raced on the dirt in southern New Mexico and I have seen some bad images. This haunts me because Adam was my age.... I gave racing up and became a firefighter (first responder) These guys and gals need someone on the track that know what to do and when to do it. Why dont the owners fork up the dough and hire an elite safety team? Is it all about the $?????

  • was that kyle petty's son?

  • @whodat42018 yeah that was kyles son and richards grandson

  • @IMFOKINGSLEEPING thanks a ton

  • @IMFOKINGSLEEPING Yes on both.

  • @whodat42018 Yes.

  • this is kinda funny

  • Can someone describe exactly what happened in the crash for me?

  • @jmwvideoman22 The "official" investigation said Petty's accelerator became stuck. The same was said about Kenny Irwin's fatal accident a month later at the same spot on the track. What is known is that Petty's car hit the wall in turn 3 at nearly full throttle with the right side of the front taking the initial impact, the secondary impact being broadside with the right side of the car flat against the outside wall. I personally have never bought into the "stuck accelerator" theory.

  • These cars should be built with an outer soft cage and a solid inner a foot apart. High speed crashes are survivable because the cage now absorbs the impact. Lower sped crashes kill because it's like hitting two rocks together.

  • Went to high school with Adam at Trinity HS in NC and my brother built his gokart engines before he started racing cars when Adam was 13-14 years old. Will never forget the day Adam died and the announcement by Rich Brenner on the local Fox 8 news. I had never seen a sports anchor cry on tv before but I did that day when Brenner couldn't hold back the tears as he announced the death of Adam Petty. I remember I started crying too. Such a sad day. Adam is still missed.

  • Why canI find no footage of his or Kenny Irwin's crash anywhere? All i can find is the "aftermath" of both. Is NASCAR covering something up?

  • @feefish001 Both crashes occurred during practice. Back in 2000, there was no full weekend coverage so there were no tapes rolling and probably no cameras set up to capture the crash as it happened. I remember after Irwin's death there about a month later, Bob Bahre (the track owner) screaming up and down that there was nothing wrong with his track. However as soon as ISC gained controlling interest in it from him, the track was reconfigured.

  • @joshuaschargers SMI, not ISC. I apologize.

  • I'm sorry it was Speedway Motorsports Inc (SMI) that reconfigured the track, not International Speedway Corp (ISC- which is essentially the same as nascar)

  • @feefish001 it was during practice so no one would cover it back then same with Adam Petty, both cars had Stuck throttles, and this was before the HANS and other safety equipment. (they both suffers Basal Skull Fratures.

  • that led to the kill switch after that sad crash :(

  • I know Kyle Petty. He never deserved this

  • I went to the fall race the last 2 years and had seats right near where he hit lap 45 I remember he died right there and that thought haunted me for the rest of the race

  • @Gforcebond It's easy to judge I completely understand but as someone has pointed out 1. If he had a neck injury they are not just going to "drag his ass out of the race car" because it will do more harm. 2. these are licensed emts/firefighters and trained for these types of situations I have actually first hand been at some of these trainings and it's amazing what they do train you for I DO PROMISE YOU THE SAFETY CREW DOES THE BEST THEY CAN! But I'm sure they knew he was gone if the didnt rush

  • That was a very dark time for nascar. Losing 4 drivers in less the 8 months. Adam Petty (July 10, 1980 to May 12, 2000. AGE 19). Kenny Irwin ( August 5, 1969 to July 7, 2000. AGE 30). Tony Roper (December 13, 1964 to October 14, 2000 Age 35). Dale Earnhardt ( April 29, 1951 to Febuary 18, 2001. Age 49). When Dale died so did nascar in my eyes. Losing 4 drivers the same freakin was and not doing anything about it untill Dale died still make me angry as hell. To hell with deathcar forever.

  • @raiiderhead Actually, NASCAR is still a fairly safe profession. My guess is that if you compare the death rate of Nascar drivers with say over the road truckers, or police man, Nascar death rates would compare favorably. These drivers are well aware they risk their lives each time they get behind the wheel, of course it terrible when a driver gets killed, I watched Greg Moore and Dale Earnhardt die on live TV. All elements of life have risks, usually the higher the risk, the higher the reward.

  • this led to the development of the kill switch. you come near the wall and press it, it turns the engine off. this was the last straw for them

  • with all do respect but if i were adam and the trottle was hung whay coulnd he just ride it aganst the wall it would have slowed it down , It sucks that hes dead though

  • @MrHartfordHockey 1. The corners have little banking 2. He probly did not realize anything was wrong until he got the car low to go into the corner 3. Going into the corner with that speed makes it impossible to keep it from going into the wall

  • hahaa

  • how can something be "pretty" fatal? either it's fatal or it isn't.

  • @machinegunboy98 If you looked it says Petty not Pretty

  • No matter how much you pay the safety crew, your time is your time.

Sad to see such great young talent go. But, I know I'll get to see him, Kulwicki, Allison, and Earnhardt racing again,m on the otherside.

  • whats sad is that he was actually pretty good.

  • Knew about Adam since it happened but first time I've seen this. Kind of hard to say what's going on with the marks on the wall. Looks like he was banging in to it for a while but it's hard to say what made him hit so hard at the end. Sad.

  • @kolbpilot His throttle stuck

  • @marshalljimduncan Makes ya wonder how such a thing could happen? I mean these guys use the most sophisticated equipment there is. It's not like it's some ratty throttle return spring bent in to place to make work.

  • I'm not the biggest NASCAR fan, but I remember that I burst out in tears when I heard about Adam Petty. He always struck me as a cheerful, happy, person who loved life. RIP, young man.

  • @Maloyo I hear you man. I was only about 12 when he lost his life. Before the crash he was my man. I don't know what it was but I immediately gravitated towards Adam, and he became my favorite driver. I think he really had potential, but I guess we will never know :(

  • RIP Adam. I wonder if any footage was taken of the actual crash.

  • it still baffles me how you can die in a NASCAR these days, Dale didn't use the proper safety equipment that he was supposed to so that how he died, I dont know about this one

  • @Villeneuve27 HANS was not enforced/implemented in nascar when Dale died, Earnhardt's death prompted NASCAR to require all drivers to use the "HANS Device" But, It wouldn't be for another year, well after the life of Dale, Adam and Kenny Irwin Jr lives was all taken in 2000. So at the date of there deaths they was all within the proper safety requirements set by nascar.

  • @Villeneuve27 This happened before Dale.. there were no head and neck restraints yet, and no new style seats like they have today.

  • hard impact

  • That sucks that Adam Petty died! He's the true heir to his grandfather King Richard Petty! R.I.P. ADAM PETTY 1980-2000!

  • what exactly happened i was to young to understand and remember when i saw the crash

  • @xxxOBLIVIONxxxx The throttle stuck heading into turn 3.

  • They just talked to his dad Kyle Petty on ESPN, its been 10 years to the day of his death.

My dad is a big Richard Petty fan, he is from North Carolina and we moved there after he got out the military, he took us to Richard Petty's museum.

I had never been to a live race until 2006, I was working for Aafes in Ft.Benning at Cinnabon, we won a paid trip to The Pepsi 400 in Daytona.

I got to meet Richard Petty, took a picture with him and got a autograph, he is strong after his grandson's death.

  • Saddest Day of my LIFE!! I miss you Adam!!

  • @nascarfan789 2002 they started and in 2004 they got all of the tracks shit full of safer barriers

  • boy you look stupid dont you? clearly its the 45 Sprint car...Irwin drove the 42 car.

  • No, it's Adam Petty, you fuckwit. Irwin passed at this same track later the same year.

  • heart breaking

  • your an idiot, why the fuck would you even want to know that you morbid asshole!!!!!!

  • well hey asshole im only a 13 year old kid and i was just wondering what happened cuz thats what i herd. i herd when he hit the wall one of the cars parts came lose and took off his head. it was just a question no need to be a dick to me.

  • I went to school with Adam and his brother and sister.

Rest in peace, brother. I wish you were still here.

  • kenny irwin jr hit a wall flipped and rested on his roof on fire in the same corner

  • Sorry but he was already dead in this video. Just like Kenny Irwin at the same freakin' spot. rip.

  • It's a shame that this ended the Petty lineage in racing. Adam probably would of been a star and a force still today. Same thing with the Allisons, their racing future unfortunately ending far too early. So many great racers gone, its a shame.

  • i agree. kyle was still out there for a while, but you could tell this loss took all the joy out of it for him.

  • I love how safety workers follow fuckin protocal-The guys slumped over-not breathing, not responding and they spend 15 minutes cutting the car open and placing him on a back board so they dont do further damage to the spine-HOW FUCKING RETARDED IS THAT????IF HES NOT BREATHING FUCK IT-GET HIM OUT AND BEGIN CPR DUMBASS! everybody is so worried about lawsuits and procedure-get the fucker out and over to the hospital-i bet it took 30 min before the even began taking him to the hospital. RIP Adam.

  • There was nothing they could do for him. He died of a bleed out. Thats where the stem of the brain snaps off and all the blood just rushes out.

  • They did that, because if they just yanked him out, they could have caused severe neck and/or head injury, worsening an already bleak and grave situation. However, Adam probably was killed on impact. RIP Adam Petty. RIP.

  • yeah wtf they doing looking at him. Drag his ass out of the race car and send him in a helicopter out of there. Maybe he had no shot, but you never know. I agree with Jeff Gordon's comments at Watkinds Glen a few years ago when he said nascar should have a safety crew that goes to them to EVERY track not some rent a safety crew guy getting paid 15 dollars an hour. Hire an elite group of safety guys that have great communication like they do in formula one. Nascar has yet to do that.

  • i agree they need a safety crew with their shit together like a pit crew

  • i agree with you i mean if formula 1 can do it then nascar can nascar is better

  • Let me tell you something about the track safety crew there that day. Everyone of them has YEARS of training in what they do. Some of them are even full time firefighters. I'm not going to give you the satisfaction by defending their actions because Adam was already dead and by the angle of the young man's neck and head when the crew rolled up, it was obvious they were NOT performing a rescue operation. Petty's death is on NASCAR for not implementing better safety precautions not safety crew.

  • @Gforcebond I agree with you. It would save alot of lives.

  • @Gforcebond To start have you ever seen a car wreck? You cant just pull someone out the car without knowing if they have neck or back or head injuries. Another thing these safety crews are not just rent a crew guys. They are all 100% Safety trained and each and everyone of them are either Firefighters or EMTs. I know one of the guys who cut Dale out of the car he is the Asst. Fire Chief for Hammond Fire Dept in Louisiana. So I give evey bit of credit in what these guys do to save lives.

  • @buuckdodger Fact of the matter is NASCAR is behind the times when its comes to safety crews. Indy car has had a traveling medical crew for years actually many years. NASCARS only worry with regards to traveling saftey crews is liability. Indy car driver Alex Zinardi who lost both of his legs in a racing accident years ago probly isnt with us today without Indy cars traveling saftey crew.

  • @michiganstopcat thats true, the crew that attended Zanardi on track were highly trained doctors and surgeons that knew what the fuck they were doing. They make a makeshift turincate right on the spot that saved his life.

  • @Gforcebond They didnt drag him out of the car because he was in the car eyes closed not moving ...Dead when he hit the the wall he died INSTANTLY! i feel sry for him he wouldve been a great driver now the petty legacy is done for maybe forever

  • @BooyakatheDragon hopfuly theres a unknown petty that is the same age as adam that will drive i hope to god so

  • @Gforcebond they were trying to get him out of the car! did you not see the guy in the grey shirt and headsets reaching into the window?.

  • @Gforcebond It's not good to just rip someone out of the car when they have head injuries, they wanted to cut him out of the car.

  • @Gforcebond: Drag him out with a neck injury? Good idea! Looking @ him? Looks like extrication to me with a caregiver at the window. Most of this crew are full time Firefighters/Paramedics, also trained in racecar extrication and drill together. As ELITE as it gets! Adam and Kenney died the second they hit the wall. NASCAR investigators determined that they died by having their brain stem detached, where breathing and heart functions are controlled=INSTANT DEATH! Ez to criticize if u werent there

  • @Gforcebond he had a basilar skull fracture, instant death almost all the time, Stanley Smith is the only one ive heard of to survive it

  • @Gforcebond MotoGp doesn't have a permanent safety crew and they work REALLY well, specially the Western European ones (Spain, Italy, France, Portugal and England to be more exact)

btw, they don't have a fixed crew in F1 (just look at the safety guys in Asia, they're more than awful)

  • @Gforcebond dude he was dead after he hit the wall but they still tryed to go as fast as they could

  • @Gforcebond Although I did not start to watch Nascar until 2002 for a driver who is seriously injured you don't want to drag him/her out because you can create more injury.

  • i know what you mean my ex g/f raced go karts she wrecked and was unconciuos they just stood around waiting on jaws of life to get there it took like 45 min to get her out when all they had to do was open the door

  • Im a big petty fan. Adam would have grown up to drive like his grandfather the king. Adam was a true racer he was a good kid. He drove the wheels off his car. It was sad seeing kyle take over the car. I think they should retire the #45. I have an autographed photo of adam petty, richard petty, and kyle petty all together and there is no photo of lee but lee's signature is also on it. RIP Adam I know your racing for god right now so is dale earnhardt and kenny irwin jr.

  • so sad.you can only imagine the great career he might have had. RIP

  • LOL, I was just kidding, i dont want him to die either. I was at that race as well, I actually ran there a little earlier this year in the street stocks but i blowed the motor, I dont like Johnson either, I would actually like Busch if he'd calm down a little, I admire the fact that he is a racer and wants to race all the time, but every time i start to like him he says something stupid to make me change my mind

  • get Kyle Busch's autograph please, lmao

  • The car of tomorrow doesn't have anything to do with it, its the HANS device that is saving all the lives. no more basil skull fractures

  • I use a HANS device while road racing. Yes it's true that the HANS would have in all cases probably have saved Irwins and Petty's lives. If you ever take a look at one up close they have 2 teathers that latch on to each side of the helmet which prevents the head from snapping all the way down.

As for the COT. That car is WAY safer. Its real easy to complain about things but the reality of being out on a FAST track without good safety equipment will kill your confidence in the drivers seat.

  • so u agree?

  • They could have the made the COT more eye pleasing. The COT was not a waste of time however. You can't appreciate what its like to have the right arm right up against the door bars verses being several inches away. The COT moved the drive away from the driver door in case of driver side impact.

  • If they just had the Hans Device, then Adam, Kenny, Dale would still be alive today

  • Well, Adam was known for leaving the pits with his helmet still hanging on the cage. Also. He was also seen a couple times without his belts tightened. So.. there ya go.

  • There have still been injuries since the HANS device was made manditory, thankfully onl concussions. Even so, it's still a head injury. It's a shame such a young, talented driver had to leave us so early. -Rest in peace, friend-

  • I had heard this from a NASCAR insider...Adam Petty did not have his uniform zipped completely up his neck. He was told to zip it up, but seeing it was a practice, he didn't feel that he had to. When he hit the wall at such force, the zipper cut his jugular vein, which also helped him bleed to death. I heard this within 3 months after his and Irwin's death, on a radio show called the LTN Hour.

  • Comment removed

  • also if it werent for jeff gordon the would be no inside safer barriers and jeff burton i believe or mybe it was robby gordon the hit the inside wall at dega this year and without that safer barrier it easily could have been fatal

  • i met adam petty a week before he passed away. he was very nice and full of life. rip adam

  • man fuck you i hope you die like he did

  • stupid ausie fucks. kangaroo fucking faggots. Your the ball lickers..thats why they say you come from the land down under...my nuts sack!

  • what ive heard over the years when he died i have heared that he had the same thing happen to him as dale earnhart sr.

  • yep, except Adam's seat belt didn't break. According to some sources, even if both drivers had been wearing the HANS device, they still wouldn't have survived. Up until 2 years ago when Gordon crashed at Pocono, Adam's crash produced the most G-force on the driver. The one good thing that came out of Adam's death is that his mom and dad have helped thousands of sick children enjoy life at the VJGC

  • His parrents had been doing that for years, even before the crash.

  • But the VJGC was basically Adam's idea, and didnt open until 2004

  • I also do not see a SAFER barrier here, unless I am missing something. Jeff Gordon ended up in a SAFER barrier.

  • Comment removed

  • At this time the SAFER barrier was only installed on the faster tracks

  • ????? dale didnt have a safer barrier at daytona. Tony Roper didnt have a safer barrier at texas.Blaise alexander didnt have a safer barrier at lowes. I dont think they had safer barriers there

  • go look at all the fatal crashes i named. thare all after 2000 and have no safer barrier look at the videos

  • dude, stop being a brainiac and just stick to a simple comment on the video? how the fuck will a hans save u from having ur internal organs hit ur rib cage????

  • if they had the car of tommorow back then. Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin jr, and Dale Earnhardt Sr would still be alive today.

  • At this time there was NO safer barrier's in nascar, it was just in it's infancy stage and a concept. They were almost 5 years later in implementation.

  • The HANS device may have saved his life, people can speculate all they want but consider this food for thought. Dale, Adam, Kenny, Neil all died from blunt force trauma to the brain/neck from hitting the walls head on. Since the HANS device no driver has even had a head injury. There has been alot of head on impact with walls too. I'd say it probably could have prevented fatal injuries in this wreck.

Sadly we'll never know. RIP Adam. You were a good man.

  • that was how biase alexander died to right?

  • yes that's what killed Blaise.

The jugular vein story is false. too btw faryasyst Petty's impact at the time and perhaps still to this day is one of the hardest G force deccelerations ever measured. The impacts of Irwin and Petty at the same track. It's not a coincidence. The walls had no safer barriers just a pipe dream at the time, neither driver wore the HANS device, both drivers hit at the same awful angle, Nascar didn't mandate it, and it cost them their lives.

  • this also killed tony roper in a truck

  • I was there when he died that night at Texas.

  • to young to die r.i.p. adam

  • RIP Adam

  • 45 his dad took it after his death

  • R.I.P.

  • that wasn't blood...it was just marks from the car hitting it...

  • So very sad. He was such a sweet kid. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Kalamazoo at the Klash the year before we lost him.

  • I'm a NASCAR fan AND I'm voting for Obama...just sayin'...

  • that was a shame. we will never know but i would bet that he would have been as good as richard if only he had the chance

  • What is it about this track somebody tell me

  • its flat and has long straights then a sharp turn, sort of like at indy reeeal long stretch then a sharp turn, with pretty much no banking.

  • it's got fast straight aways and little banking

  • new hampshire.

  • This is so sad I cant believe what happened to him..

  • why no sound

  • oh nope it was new hampshire, sorry bout' that man

  • ghettobidr your an asshole

  • i meant to put D: sad face. i said it to correct the person who said he died at talladega practice and i got thumbs downed because dumbasses like you dont look through ALL the comments before you make a comment R.I.P Adam Petty... and its the internet i could care less what you think

  • made the comment a month ago a bit late arent ya

  • is there like any actually footage of this crash?

  • i dont think so i have never seen it. i think the pettys made it confidential

  • THANK GOD..THERE IS NOT

  • What happened? Stuck throttle? Cut Tire? Flip? What was it?

  • Stuck throttle

  • Kyle Petty has never driven the same. My cousin Steven was like babysitting Adams girlfriends sister or something like that when it happend. R.I.P

  • Adam petty was a great guy! The only ironic thing is that Kenny irwin was the one that knocked adams car into the wall coincidentally Kenny irwin died same exact reason on the same exact corner! :p

  • Kenny Irwin knocked Adam Petty's car??? i thought adam has stuck throttle

  • That sucks, Adam could have saved Petty Enterprises.

  • Kyle Petty does have another son. his name is Austin Petty. I hope he gets into nascar some how?

  • Kyle will allow it.

  • To bad that there won't be a 5th generation.

  • no, this was in a prctice session.

  • are there any videos of the crash?

  • SEE WHAT I MEAN? (SIS2011)

  • the REASON EVERONE CANT GET ALONG BECUASE THERES SO MANY STUPID BITCHES ON YOUTUBE WHO THINKS THERE FUNNY BUT IN REAL LIFE THERE JUST ASSHOLES AND HAVE NO LIFE THATS WHY.

  • You're right Halo, Adam never had a son. However he did leave a hell of a legacy. The Victory Junction camp was Adam's baby, after he died Kyle took it and ran with it. Being that young and leaving behind something like that is something a father can be proud of.
