I love Linus Torvalds, he could have easy been richer than Bill Gates, but instead he just wanted to make the world a better place and increase the knowledge of the world, not just profit off of it.
Linux will only ever take over a large market share in a super-user friendly form like Ubuntu. I don't expect my nan to be compiling Gentoo anytime soon.. :P
I think Linux is for technical folks, almost exclusively. I can do almost anything I want - with a little effort.
Most people however, don't want to do any work, they just want their computer TO work.
So Linux will always be confined to that part of the market that actually _does_ stuff with their computer. That tends to be somewhere between 5-10% of the market, it's the old 80/20 rule - but I don't view it in a bad way necessarily.
Are you thinking of Linux in the early 90s or now? My grandmother who didn't even know how to operate a mouse is using Linux. I've found Ubuntu to be better for beginners than Windoze because it does not have all the frustrations of licensing, malware, harder to install programs, etc. It's actually easier (depending on the distro) if you're using it normally.
The only Linux is "harder" is if you're hacking it. If you don't want it to be harder, just use it like you do Windows.
No, I think that while your grandmother is content, if she get's a new camera or something, the support rep will not know how to spell Ubuntu let alone support it.
I think Ubuntu (in particular) is a work of art, AND had it come out - say 10 years ago _would_ in fact have been a windows killer.
As the product improves at a much faster pace than does Windows, 20 years from now the tables will surely be turned, but I suspect right now we are nearing but not at the proverbial "tipping point".
Actually, nearly all hardware I've used has "just worked" as soon as I plug it in. The only problems I've had was with a wireless card and a really old scanner that didn't even work in Win xp. The problem with the wireless card was it used a broadcom chipset so I just wrapped the Windows drivers. The scanner, I had to download the driver. Tech "support" is a thing of the past anyway. Every problem so far has been or will be solved fast by the community, something closed source does not have.
I'll put it this way, if the situation was a level playing field, and there was not a larger / more embraced support base by vendors, Ubuntu or Redhat or whatever would pull out pretty quickly, so I think it's a question of over time, MS and vendors keep providing mediocre support and you could easily see a swing, in that way, to see a preview of things to come, I always go to see what college folks are doing, and what they are doing should terrify the guys at Microsoft.
I beleive that Linux has a chance to take over the market in the future. With the rise in the economy Windows and Mac will lose traffic because of their large price tags.
Linux will continue to be open source. The Linux community doesn't make money, but the Linux community doesn't loose it either.
The initial appeal for Linux is the fact that it is free. The second is that it is 100% user supported and open source, and has no corporation (or corporate lawyers) breathing down your back.
Trust me, the only device that Linux doesn't support, and I must stress, the ONLY device it doesn't recognize is the Belkin F5D7001 Wireless card. I hated that I had to get another wireless card to use Linux ;)
You can get your Broadcom 4306 card working in Linux. It's not as easy Atheros chipsets because broadcom makes crappy cheap chipsets but you can get it running. Check the appropriate [solved] forums.
I took the ndiswrapper route but yes they all can be used to my knowledge. Personally I'll always get Atheros because you can just plug it in to any computer and it works immediately without the 2 minutes it takes to get a broadcom running. They seem to cause less problems in the long run. I had an Edimax USB card with a cool RPSMA antenna (perfect for a yagi or cantenna) that worked out of the box too but I haven't bothered to see what kind of card it is.
The Broadcom WiFi chip in my Xubuntu laptop works fine, but I did find the restricted drivers for it were blacklisted (no idea why).
HP works well with Linux, because they have their own Linux distro they maintain in house. As for other printer companies, I think Brother works; my brother Joe has a Brother laser printer, and has been using Linux far longer than I have.
Celebrity sightings ... I found Ali & Laverne (from the Laverne & Shirley sitcom)! Anyone have a clue who the others might be? And what was this commercial purpose? There really isn't one Linux distribution so it can't possibly be for brand marketing (could it?) And it being a "free" OS, was it to pitch for some kind of financial support? Just curious ...
Could be a commercial to raise awareness of Linux. You would be surprised to know that there are people who literally think that Windows is the only OS out there.
Of course, it could be advertising for IBM's Linux servers and/or their own Linux distro.
Also, even though the code is free, some distros do charge the customer for it, but it is usually for tech support or just donations to the development team behind it.
@evenness Linux kernel is the OS, this ad is about the OS. Linux / GNU (in that order) is a development environment what is Linux OS running GNU development tools.
You can use Linux OS without any GNU software. In the ad the kids name is Linux. It has no last name, as you suggested it would be GNU.
@TheFri13 is only linux kernel all the operative system???hahahahahaha I don't know about this shit ,do you prefer linux msdos or linux gates, ?obviously not, I not talking about any fucking philosophi or deeping programing, I just love Gnu/Linux working together, is there anyone using Linux without GNU? , maybe not-yes ,but I prefer this 2 in it , so fuck 'em
@evenness stop being so pedant dude. Sure Linux was and is the name of a project for the implementation of a Unix kernel, but people use the term to mean what initially was called GNU/Linux. Language isn't dead, but apparently your neurons are.
@LTS1287 This is part of the series of similar commercicals. But others subjects are other areas where IBM is as well working. This was just for LInux with same idea. The other ads are great as well. But you are right, IBM could make more Ads about Linux. But they do not focus to desktops but to servers.
Concerning driver support, the root of the problem is most companies make their drivers just for windows, and do not put out documentation or have their source open, for fear of competitors stealing it. So Linux developers have to recode the drivers themselves. That takes a lot of time, and usually results in a few bugs. Luckily as Linux grows, more drivers are released for it from the companies themselves. Also, Mac assembles their computers so do not have this problem.
