  • My name is Linux. Gnu Linux

  • It's happening fa- Kernel panic.

  • His dad's name is GNU.

His cousin's names are BSD and Solaris.

His dad's friend's name is Unix.

  • Maravilhoso! O GNU/Linux precisa de mais disso.

  • his name is MALFOY

  • i typed in the web address at the end but its gone... hmmm.... who would want to ruin open source??? *cough*m$*cough*

  • Awesome !

  • Aah wonderfull vid

  • I love Linus Torvalds, he could have easy been richer than Bill Gates, but instead he just wanted to make the world a better place and increase the knowledge of the world, not just profit off of it.

  • @imanerd36 he is a good example of humanity.

  • IBM did that?

  • yes

  • Excellent presentation. I can say that Linux is freedom.

  • Linux must be everywhere... in your brain ;)

  • If thats what linux looks like I wounder what bsd looks like?

  • Very beautiful video

  • Linux will only ever take over a large market share in a super-user friendly form like Ubuntu. I don't expect my nan to be compiling Gentoo anytime soon.. :P

  • I think Linux is for technical folks, almost exclusively. I can do almost anything I want - with a little effort.

Most people however, don't want to do any work, they just want their computer TO work.

So Linux will always be confined to that part of the market that actually _does_ stuff with their computer. That tends to be somewhere between 5-10% of the market, it's the old 80/20 rule - but I don't view it in a bad way necessarily.

  • Are you thinking of Linux in the early 90s or now? My grandmother who didn't even know how to operate a mouse is using Linux. I've found Ubuntu to be better for beginners than Windoze because it does not have all the frustrations of licensing, malware, harder to install programs, etc. It's actually easier (depending on the distro) if you're using it normally.

The only Linux is "harder" is if you're hacking it. If you don't want it to be harder, just use it like you do Windows.

  • No, I think that while your grandmother is content, if she get's a new camera or something, the support rep will not know how to spell Ubuntu let alone support it.

I think Ubuntu (in particular) is a work of art, AND had it come out - say 10 years ago _would_ in fact have been a windows killer.

As the product improves at a much faster pace than does Windows, 20 years from now the tables will surely be turned, but I suspect right now we are nearing but not at the proverbial "tipping point".

  • Actually, nearly all hardware I've used has "just worked" as soon as I plug it in. The only problems I've had was with a wireless card and a really old scanner that didn't even work in Win xp. The problem with the wireless card was it used a broadcom chipset so I just wrapped the Windows drivers. The scanner, I had to download the driver. Tech "support" is a thing of the past anyway. Every problem so far has been or will be solved fast by the community, something closed source does not have.

  • I'll put it this way, if the situation was a level playing field, and there was not a larger / more embraced support base by vendors, Ubuntu or Redhat or whatever would pull out pretty quickly, so I think it's a question of over time, MS and vendors keep providing mediocre support and you could easily see a swing, in that way, to see a preview of things to come, I always go to see what college folks are doing, and what they are doing should terrify the guys at Microsoft.

  • I beleive that Linux has a chance to take over the market in the future. With the rise in the economy Windows and Mac will lose traffic because of their large price tags.

Linux will continue to be open source. The Linux community doesn't make money, but the Linux community doesn't loose it either.

  • The initial appeal for Linux is the fact that it is free. The second is that it is 100% user supported and open source, and has no corporation (or corporate lawyers) breathing down your back.

  • Trust me, the only device that Linux doesn't support, and I must stress, the ONLY device it doesn't recognize is the Belkin F5D7001 Wireless card. I hated that I had to get another wireless card to use Linux ;)

  • You can get your Broadcom 4306 card working in Linux. It's not as easy Atheros chipsets because broadcom makes crappy cheap chipsets but you can get it running. Check the appropriate [solved] forums.

  • I've had various Broadcam cards that have all worked with Arch Linux.

    Broadcom doesn't make crappy chipsets.

And FYI, installing a broadcom card can be as easy as: sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter

  • I took the ndiswrapper route but yes they all can be used to my knowledge. Personally I'll always get Atheros because you can just plug it in to any computer and it works immediately without the 2 minutes it takes to get a broadcom running. They seem to cause less problems in the long run. I had an Edimax USB card with a cool RPSMA antenna (perfect for a yagi or cantenna) that worked out of the box too but I haven't bothered to see what kind of card it is.

  • The reference of "blond" may be linked to where Linus Torvalds comes from.

  • Eminem's story?

  • The Broadcom WiFi chip in my Xubuntu laptop works fine, but I did find the restricted drivers for it were blacklisted (no idea why).

HP works well with Linux, because they have their own Linux distro they maintain in house. As for other printer companies, I think Brother works; my brother Joe has a Brother laser printer, and has been using Linux far longer than I have.

  • Celebrity sightings ... I found Ali & Laverne (from the Laverne & Shirley sitcom)! Anyone have a clue who the others might be? And what was this commercial purpose? There really isn't one Linux distribution so it can't possibly be for brand marketing (could it?) And it being a "free" OS, was it to pitch for some kind of financial support? Just curious ...

  • Could be a commercial to raise awareness of Linux. You would be surprised to know that there are people who literally think that Windows is the only OS out there.

Of course, it could be advertising for IBM's Linux servers and/or their own Linux distro.

Also, even though the code is free, some distros do charge the customer for it, but it is usually for tech support or just donations to the development team behind it.

  • his last name is GNU

  • @evenness GNU has nothing to do with the Linux OS. And the Ad is about OS, not about development platform.

  • @TheFri13 wtf are you saying? is not there a relationship between GNU / linux?

    SO??

  • @evenness Linux kernel is the OS, this ad is about the OS. Linux / GNU (in that order) is a development environment what is Linux OS running GNU development tools.

You can use Linux OS without any GNU software. In the ad the kids name is Linux. It has no last name, as you suggested it would be GNU.

The ad was only about LInux, nothing about GNU.

  • @TheFri13 is only linux kernel all the operative system???hahahahahaha I don't know about this shit ,do you prefer linux msdos or linux gates, ?obviously not, I not talking about any fucking philosophi or deeping programing, I just love Gnu/Linux working together, is there anyone using Linux without GNU? , maybe not-yes ,but I prefer this 2 in it , so fuck 'em

  • @evenness stop being so pedant dude. Sure Linux was and is the name of a project for the implementation of a Unix kernel, but people use the term to mean what initially was called GNU/Linux. Language isn't dead, but apparently your neurons are.

  • @picapauengracado WTF are you saying man, ? i said the same before, can`t you read between the lines?

  • @or can be XFCE or KDE or MDI heh

  • @evenness

Why? This ad isn't about GNU.

  • @westygw WTF?¡?¡?¡¡?¡?¡?¡?¡ obviusly you can't read a sarcastic comment

  • @evenness

How was that comment sarcasm? Explain this to me.

  • @westygw wow man go and compile the kernel and you will understand it

  • @evenness His dad's name is GNU

  • very nice video

  • kid kinda looks like eminem

  • THATS WHAT I THOUGHT!

  • Linux Pwnd Noobs!

  • Why doesn't IBM make more commercials like this?!?!

  • @LTS1287 This is part of the series of similar commercicals. But others subjects are other areas where IBM is as well working. This was just for LInux with same idea. The other ads are great as well. But you are right, IBM could make more Ads about Linux. But they do not focus to desktops but to servers.

  • Remember me Kubrick

  • No, was created a few years back. Windows was already ruling the market when Linux came about.

  • maybe...

  • Not maybe.

  • i just love how little basement driller kids like to talk shit about the subject they know nothing about... keep it up

  • Was that a dig at me or the other guy?

  • have a guess. to make it simpler u have three help options... 50/50, call a friend, or take out my dog for a little walk

  • What type of dog first.

  • its an imaginary dog, it can be anything you want

  • Sweet as, I will get my peanut butter ready.

btw, the guy made a comment that this commercial was created in the early 90's or something like that. I was correcting him.

  • Lol. I know much about the Lie-nukes.

  • es una verdadera obra de arte (piece of art)

  • linux is on the rise bitches!

my personal fav distro at the moment:

ARCH Linux (Canadian and FAST [VERY FAST})

    running XFCE with nautilus..

    Ubuntu is good too..

  • I love the video a representation of a rebellion that will liberate the technology to the world.

  • Well said and very true

  • I love using linux, but this video is soooooo creepy.

  • Concerning driver support, the root of the problem is most companies make their drivers just for windows, and do not put out documentation or have their source open, for fear of competitors stealing it. So Linux developers have to recode the drivers themselves. That takes a lot of time, and usually results in a few bugs. Luckily as Linux grows, more drivers are released for it from the companies themselves. Also, Mac assembles their computers so do not have this problem.

  • Linux needs better driver support? . . .

make your own driver and quit bitching!

  • Better driver support? I'm not a 100% Linux man, actually I would say I use linux less than 20% of the time but I've used several distributions and live cds and those distributions actually support more devices out of the box than windows does, I haven't had to install a thing on them and everytime I plug something I get amazed that it is recognized immediately.

  • I guess not having to sell anything means that when you DO make commercials, they're a heck of a lot more sincere than commercial commercials, if you get my draft. Yes, draft. I don't know why, but I'm not in the mood for drifts today.

  • IBM supports projects like Linux and Eclipse because they use them to improve their systems. Eclipse has been sponsored by IBM and thanks it is a tool open source has developed by IBM called Websphere, which has contains more than 900 plugins while eclipse only has around 50.

  • sometimes i think it's better this way?!? why should all the idiots use GNU/Linux? (remember, gnu is a very important of what most of us refer to, as Linux) Let them pay for ther stupidity! the downside is that Mr. Gates gets all the cash...

  • Linux is the future and the best OS ever.

  • linux is my favourite OS too, but statements like "this is best, fuck the rest" will not do anyone any good! ( bsd and macosx are really good too... even windows has a few (very few) good things about it)

  • this post was a reply to diegoev.... i don't know why it came out this way :|

  • linex is an okay OS

  • I'm a couple months on Linux now (Kubuntu), completely self taught. Whenever I think of Microsoft now, I Think of those old punch-card computers that took up a whole room.

  • ehhh!...ok??

  • Linux is the best OS for PCs, but i wonder: from where do those guys from linux have enough money to make a commercial if it is a free operating system?

  • Linux guys? money? This is from IBM and they have plenty of money this was a few years ago when they had their "Peace, Love, Linux" campaign...they prob still have the site somewhere in the depths of ibm dot com but most money from Linux comes through support. Unfortunately you are right, there is not enough money for us Linux guys to make cool commercials; and people wonder why they have never heard of Linux... When MS has billions of dollars in marketing to tell everyone other wise.

  • One of the ways is by charging companies for support, and that's just one way - there's a lot more ways to earn on linux.

  • great video... however a specific apple comercial comes in mind when one is watching this...

  • I linux keeps on advancing so rapidly it will surely be on everyone pc!Im too a linux newb, but I have read some comparisons with windows and then i understood that linux rules!

  • You should not base opinions on things you read.

I use both Windows and Linux heavily, as well as BSD. All have their places and are good for different things.

  • can't linux read windows and mac files? sry im good with computers but im a complete linux newb

  • very nice indeed...i believe in Linux too

  • that's why linux, Freebsd or another freOs will soon dominate the wolrd.

  • When better driver support is added and interaction is made easier, this may be the case. Until then free OSs will stay at their low market share.

Unfortunately it is this low market share that causes manufacturers not to release drivers in the first place, so it is hard to get out of this cycle.

  • Linux needs better driver support? Since when? Look up "Myths, Lies, and Truths about the Linux kernel". What Linux needs is support from software designers (more cross-platform applications), not hardware manufacturers.

  • You better take a another close look, as far as i'm concerned, I have no driver problems in linux, and for you to know, with nvidia I have more FPS (+10 to 20)than on DX10 on vista... who has a driver problem?

BTW, I have very esoteric linux machines with very weird hardware and surprise, no driver problems... weird heh, take a look for your self. ha, we can eve now fully replace a windows DS 2003 or 2007, cool heh.

  • tunespt, don't worry, I love Linux, so you don't have to lie to me. If you have never had any problems with hardware support in Linux, you must have only used systems specifically designed with support in mind at build time, even if they /are/ esoteric.

TazG2000, I said that support needs to be added, I did not say by whom.

Just look at Creative X-Fi for an example of very bad and slow hardware support. This is Creative's fault, not a flaw of Linux. This was exactly my point.

  • Second that. I've got a x-fi extreme whatever gathering dust now that I've swithched to Linux, and it will continue to gather dust because I won't stop using linux. It's Creatives loss as far as I'm concerned.

  • Unfortunately, if you have already paid for the card, it is not their loss. The only way Creative loses money is if so many people don`t buy the product that the retailer stops buying stock for it.

  • That's true, but do you think I'll ever buy another creative card again after the way they've treated gnu/linux users? No. Just like how I'll never buy an ATI card for the same reason.

  • The word you are looking for is Ubuntu ;-)
