  • i am searching so much for music like this.... like so slow and the base and guitar but i cant find a discribe what style this is can pleace anybodi tell me? i am from switzerland :D sory for my english

  • @jegidorfo This is Mark Knopfler - One of a kind. The Real Guitar God - Keep listening to the legend and you will find more music like this

  • For those who have been asking, this song was inspired by the firm police action (included mounted units) ordered by Mrs Thatcher against the (illegally) striking miners in the famous 1984 strike which broke the power of the unions for ever. Clearly Mark Knopfler's view of events is different to mine, but the song is fantastic

  • Thank you for posting!

  • Tank you!

  • I've associated this song with police brutality and other forms of violent injustice which prevail even between wars. But, that's just my take, I can see how the lyrics speak of other things. Oh yeah, and its a beautiful song with a catchy but mellow rhythm.

  • the blood keep being red and the grass keep being green

  • this song is about the time Mark Knofler invented the super nintendo

  • VThx! How much is ur pandora's box? ; )

  • I absolutely love this song. It just amazes me how you can sum up the emotional torture of war in four minutes. We (War) haven't changed since ancient times..

  • I have never found what inspired these lyrics, but it makes me think of the Battle of Gettysburg. There is a haunting soft horn that carries a melody in this song. It is so beautiful, does anyone know what it is.

  • omfg amazing music i cant stop listen to this !!!

  • aw what a lovely fellow, thnx

  • @GeorgeC2009 It's about the battle of Orgreave in 1984

  • @pennywiseg

I didn't know that; I also thought it was a universal anti-war song. (At least I wasn't the only one.)

But "it even shocked the Queen" makes it pretty clear.

It's a gorgeous, powerful song either way, and like any great art, can support multiple interpretations (including some that the artist didn't intend). But it's always best to know what the artist's original vision was.

Thanks so much for the education.

And thank you, leksingen, for sharing it here. 5'd & fav'd.

  • no its about soldiers and going off to fight. alot of his songs are about war. Ride Across the River: about a juungle war. listen to the lyrics "im a soldier of fortune im a dog of war...and we dont give a damn who the killin is for." " im a soldier of freedom in the army of the man, we are the chosen were the partisan" a partisan is a rebel soldier against a hostile regime. this song is about i think Civil War soldiers but it could be about any soldiers: "the belts and boots march forward..."

  • @Tommy1977777 it's about the battle of orgrave coke plant during the miners stike in england 1984-1985, the rank and file been the miners and the blue line been the police
