I don't know why, but I've always found that picture of the priest and the little native girl fascinating. Does anyone know if that's an actual picture, or was it just made for the show?
The first season was great. The retool they did for the second season was a bad call because it took away what made the show unique. Furthermore, the Theresa character who was an EMT in the first season was a police officer in the second season. This character as a police officer was simply not believable.
I swear, the demise of this show was very similar to the demise of "Life," which was ironally also on NBC!: awesome first season but low ratings causes them to retool it and dumb it down in the second season. But show still maintains decent potential...only to get cancelled.
I just got my DVD set from Amazon today. I don't even care if Lionsgate doesn't put out the second season, since they more or less gutted the show. Guess they should have counted on the fact that their target audience probably didn't even know how to spell "Rashomon," let alone recognize a TV version of it when they saw it.
The commentary said that they retooled the show in the second season to be a bit more of a straight "cop show". I was disappointed in this - was hoping to see episodes focused around the EMT or journalist characters rather than going back to just another cop show. Or what about one focused on the perps, a la Homicide's classic "Gas Man" episode? There was so much that could be done here. Great cast, great writing.
Uh, it kinda was? This is the same network that thought "Kath and Kim" and "Parks and Recreation" were worth keeping. This is the same network that didn't even give promising shows like "Kidnapped" or "The Black Donnellys" a fair shake. The only network with worse judgment as far as programming is concerned is ABC. I damn well say it WAS NBC's fault.
Those shows are worth keeping because AMERICA keeps tuning in!! WHat dont u get?? It's all about RATINGS, not reviews or a select group of people's opinions.
They want a HUGE NUMBER of people watching the show.
this is an INDUSTRY. MONEY IS ALL THAT MATTERS.
NOT NBC's fault. Maybe how they marketed it, but in the end it was up for America to decide.
@cubdukat I LOVED Kidnapped. I met Jeremy Sisto in Minneapolis in 2008 and the first thing I mentioned was that show. He had nothing but good memories of it and credits it for getting him and Linus Roache hired on Law and Order.
I rented "Kidnapped" from netflix, but never got the chance to finish it. I'll come back to it at some point.
And we can now add another NBC police drama to the list: "Southland." I don't think the problem is just that NBC keeps junk shows; it's that they keep junk shows originated by their parent company NBC Universal.
god i miss that show. i used to watch it religiously with my dad. mcdonough was brilliant. as was wahlberg. it ended way to prematurely. that was when tv actually had brains.
Great series that should never have been cancelled. I just bought the entire season 1 dvd collection at Blockbuster for $10.00 (used). Really enjoying it.
This was an excellent show. But nooooo...we have to cancel it to make room for another damned reality TV show! They should have kept it on or at least put all of the episodes on a complete series DVD (not just season 1). Allow this show some dignity.
This show was a perfect example of what happens when you have a bunch of executives who want to keep television "the boob tube" instead of giving the audience a little credit for being able to follow multiple points of view in a story.
They didn't make the 2nd season bad. The brain-farts in charge put it on Fridays, which effectively kills most shows. It only lasted 2 episodes there, which is not nearly enough to make a decision on an entire season.
ya, this was an awesome show. i just thought it was going to be like law and order where it could have gone on forever. but sadly, you had to have just a little bit of intelligence to watch this show and too many americans don't have that so we get shows about posh spice.
Could someone also please post the "It ain't the Ganges" monologue from the opening of the first episode? I thought that was a highlight of the show, too.
Thanks! I really like how the Ganges monologue and the opening credits set the show up. Los Angeles was born on the banks of the L.A. River, but now it's largely paved over and hidden. It could be so much more.
I agree this was a truly awesome show, one of the best Cop shows ever. The best part of it was Neal Mcdough's performance. My god was a great actor, and a excellent performance. His character was flawed but good, and the rest of the cast was great too, including Don Walbergh. I miss this show a lot, Damn you NBC, Damn you to hell.
One of my best song's show ever.

This show was ahead of its time. NBC should have stuck by it, and I agree that you needed to have some patience and intelligence to keep up with it.

This was a great show.
Want to know why NBC is destined to stay in last place? Because they canceled brilliant, thoughtful shows like this.
NBC deserves their fate.

Dude it was a great show yes, but THIS IS AN INDUSTRY.
They don't care about a show's "intelligence", they care about ratings.
LOST happens to be a HUGE HIT and a DAMN GOOD SHOW, together.
Boomtown was axed because it couldn't find an audience. That's not NBC's fault.
That's the U.S.'s. Get over it.
