right...that factors in as well...it is a simple tune as a stand alone thing...but do it w.an ensemble...and as an opening number...think about it...oh...notice the gtr slop @ 3:57??? love it. :)
wow...i saw this as a teen on fridays and saw the london calling tour as well. the power and image and energy made me cry then(for reasons i didn't understand)as it does now(for reasons i do understand). god what i'd give to go back in time to that magical night at the motor city roller rink in detroit rock city, seems like a dream but i was there, they played for the better part of 3 hours...and did an extended sound check for us kids, it was so special...you had to be there...and i was. (-_-)
@jimmythecreep A few year's back during a gig in Hamtramck, Detroit, I found the former- Lili's, fave watering hole for the Creem magazine staff. The bartender told me of the night they had to carry Strummer out of the place drunk off his a*s on Polish cherry brandy, and then proceeded to give me a complimentary shot. After reading about that episode as a young teenager in Creem back in the day, it was almost surreal standing in the same room.
@jimmythecreep Me, too- the choice ones are stacked on the bed-stand next to my bed (along with my choice Trouser Press mags) for instant time-travel and inspiration, which is much-needed in these times. Glad I never threw out any of my RnR stuff, be it posters, tshirts, buttons, fan-club stuff (remember those?), albums and 45's, etc. Definitely keeps me young!
@jimmythecreep That's right- I had forgotten the name. The place my band played was about a 10 min walk from the Painted lady, on the corner of a main thorougfare- cannot remember the name but had two rooms- a back bar area and the main room with a high-ish stage. Very close to a middle-eastern type grocery. Perhaps you know the place?
Anyway, it was a real treat that I found the old Lili's nearby as I had read so much about it in the pages of those old Creems circa late 70's/early 80's.
@mapache11 i don't think that's the case. pretty much every live version of l/c i've heard the lyrics were a lil botched. i think nervous energy had a lot to do w/it. i cover the song occasionally in my band and it's a tough song to cover. hard to remember the lyric sequence while playing that gtr riff. there is a syncopation to the riff, takes a bit of concentration. balance that while trying to sing it. he got it right every time w.the mescaleros tho. i love strummer, he was the man. :)
@jimmythecreep he either did it for fun, or because he was drinking, or for fun because he was drinking. Your reasoning that it is difficult to sing and play at the same time is stupid.
@jimmythecreep Em - C - Em - G. With all due respect, you're confusing syncopation with staccato. I've performed it many times over the years in various garage bands. It's an distinctive and powerful chord sequence with the bars on the 7th and 8th frets (then down to a half bar G on the 3rd), but it's about as easy to play as "Blitzkrieg Bop." I think it was a combination of alcohol, nervousness (first time on US TV) . . . it sounds cool despite the transposed lyrics.
@TheGAK62 This is from a weekly late-night sketch-comedy show called "Fridays," which aired for a couple of seasons in the early 80s. It was basically CBS's "Saturday Night Live" clone, and they had the Clash on one the first shows. For an American show airing on a major network -- even at 11:30pm -- they were pretty adventurous in their selection of musical guests.
DON'T YOU PEOPLE SEE, JOE IS PLAYING THE BASS AND PAUL IS PLAYING THE GUITAR ON GUNS OF BRIXTON. DO YOU SEE HOW IT WAS "ALL TOGETHER" AND IT DIDN'T MATTER WHO WAS DOING WHAT BECAUSE THEY WERE "ALL IN." THEY PUT "THE CLASH" INSTEAD OF THEIR PERSONAL NAMES ON MUSIC WRITTEN, PLAYED, AND SANG, FOR BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL WORKING ON THE SAME THING.

Joe Stummer and Mick Jones one of the best punk writing partnerships which laid ground work for other great punk bands such as rancid very diverse writing styles
@ClashCityRocker94 ive seen him do it in alot of videos with different songs. he is good at covering it up, soetimes even improvises and ads new lyrics.
Mick in a zoot suit. Joe doing "Pee Wee" before Paul Reubens ever thought of it. Paul in his leather jacket (sans shirt). And Topper doing his part for breast cancer awareness. Why? Because they damn well felt like it. That's punk, baby!
