take of the tape deck cover, press pause and play at the same time, the buttons should stay on, make sure the thing is turned on, and make sure the tape casette has some music on it, for you to scratch on.

i used a different method than this, i took the top of the cassette too, and than i could grab the heads, and scratch em

don't ask me. but probably you can buy tape recorder just like this one on video, remove mechanism responsible for spinning the tape & add simple dipswitch button doing a 'mute' thing. but better ask alexismalbert how this was done.
