  • I remember when this came out in Philly , we all knew it was the last year of touring.

  • i dont have any amazing teenage stories of going to dead concerts or anything, but the way this band makes me feel is absolutly incredible.

  • Grate job! Thanks for the hard work and upload :)

  • dude, how did you get the sick cloud footage?

  • FUCK YEAH ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

  • I bought the record 'from the mars hotel' about 10 to 12 years ago.....when I heard this song for the first time it blew my mind away....

  • one of the most beautiful songs I am lucky to know....listening to this I am grateful for being on this planet in this time era !! ;D

  • wheres phil????????no pics of the man singing?amazing the way jerry played outta this world CRAZY FINGERS ha

  • @dosed1dosed1000 hahahah thats a riot your so right man

  • So talented. Forget 4/4 Common Time, this is 15/8.

  • Jerry 's got to be in heaven now and God must be a deadhead!

  • makes me miss my bro

  • A masterpiece braden... great job

  • Animal Collective brought me here and made me discover a good song. Awesome.

  • @Mastragat IM A FAN OF ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, BUT HOW DID THEY BRING YOU HERE???

  • @portraitphenomenon They sampled Unbroken Chain ( 1:17 ) in their song "What Would I Want ? Sky !" off the EP "Fall Be Kind".

  • @portraitphenomenon nice, i didnt know this. i also didnt know that animal collective had 10 other albums i dint have. thanks to you , ill be getting them soon. animal collective is the bomb exploding!!! grateful dead too.

thank you a million for openning my senses a bit more.

  • Whats with all the Jerry footage? This is a Phil song.

  • Unbroken chain says it all for me.

Is there a song more gentle, more moody beautiful.....this song lives forever. Amen.

This was my brother's first love song. He and his friends used to hear the planes landing just over their heads in Delhi, parked at the end of the runway in '74.

It's been his anthem ever since. Thank you, thank you.

  • This song was one of their best. It shows the distinct talents of Lesh, and a fluid yet tight and atmospheric sound that the Dead never approached again. The song is very spiritual & yet so undiscovered.

  • beautiful.

  • Something i never ever expected 2 c! Dream come true!

  • Why is Jerry singing Phil?

  • is that apple from granola funk express??? i was at philly to we all cried i think......end of days ya know

  • folks can knock it when its "off"

    but on,

    this is eternal

    Some great experiments on Mars

  • this is peggy o

  • Bye

  • I cry every time I hear this, Phil and jerry tear apart with this

  • 1:18 Anakjnfkjdsnfm, naskdnfkjlsadnfkjsadnfjksnakjflsndjkafndkjslanfdjksnafkjldsnfjklsa MAGIC

  • how can you not like this tune? They were on a good roll this period!

  • What Would I Want? Sky

  • Did you edit this yourself? The video meshes so well with the recording! Even though its phil singing someone new to the dead would think jerrys singin it!

  • shows how timeless (and good) this music is when a teenager like myself listens to this

  • Why do you show Jerry and not Phil? This is a Phil tune, jerry, doesn't sing this....

  • 2:23 im sorry but if you wern't a dead head you think this is so gay.......then jerry in the aweful shorts and full on stilt white heroine addict legs? oy...thank god the had

  • @woofielove1970 thank god they had talent

  • @woofielove1970 you are looking at his legs, maybe you are the gay one. Judge not, lest ye be judged...

  • Jerry looks kind of Majestic in the beginning of the video. Hell he is majestic.

  • Mars Hotel version which I probably haven't listened to in 30+ years, with very nice video to go along...images that seem to flow from a dream I had a long long time ago....And seemingly so aproppos considering that Jerry's passed on now...

Phil has been ripping this one up over the last dozen or so years with 3 distinct movements, and I'm always jazzed to hear him start it up at shows, but it is nice to hear the original we knew back when it came out..

  • This is a Phil Lesh tune. The Dead had a depth of talent. Don't think it was all Jerry, genius that he was, he couldn't do it alone.

  • Lilac rain , unbroken chain. one of the best songs ever.

  • i was in Philly when the boys broke this tune out.... I cried

  • @ccsbennett cause of how horribly they played it? lol

  • thumbs up for animal collective making this even more awesome with what would i want sky!!

  • I've seen Jerry 20+ times with the Dead and JGB, but never in short pants. Cool!

  • i love living in new mexico! So many great artists.

  • Who is the guy at 2:19ish?

  • @sharegrace Sounds like Donna.

  • tell it ~~~~~~~~~~~``

  • Gorgeous song spoiled somewhat by the Jon Michelle Jarre keyboard stylings that cut through like a razor...ouch !!!

  • is how those relationships that ceased to exist as aolgo that is broken but yet some still dreaming of that unbroken chain like a dream you have ever been but for some people, it was only an illusion and not only that it also hands your trust as something that either had something to do with reality

  • WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY. WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY. WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY. WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY. WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY. WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY. WHAT WOULD I WANT? SKY.

  • At the 3:00 mark to 4:40 captures the essence of Garcia...

    China White a mofo.

  • I remember when they whipped this out in Philly near the end for the first time ever. Let's just say it makes the phrase "tripping your face off" seem demure. I thought my head was gonna blow off .....

  • Wonderful video... love this song so much.

  • Phil Always sing Such Good Slow And Touching Songs I Love Him And The Band, Box of Rain, Tom Thumb Blues...Ect

  • beautiful vid great song thanks!

  • i saw phil lesh and bob weir at red rocks this summer they are stil awesome as hell

  • Hah. I bet that first footage of Jerrys from the Peggy-O video on here, if it isnt look for it, Jerrys looking truly magical!

  • This is an absolutely perfect song! On the '91 tour, we filled the Pittsburgh stadium with a link of balloons that surrounded the entire stadium trying to get Phil to do 'unbroken chain'. They didn't play it.

years later, I think it was '95, they played it in Vegas. It was such a mixed emotion. The band was a MESS. the only Dead show I ever walked out of. A few months later Jerry was dead. So, those are my twisted memories of 'unbroken chain', though I still love it dearly.

  • @TheClownfight My last show was in 93 and when they came to Denver in 94 I refrained. I hoped to see 'em again but I'm glad I was able to be in the music for as long as I was. Cheers.

  • Whenever I go to this video, I click 1:17, wait a second, then click again, wait a second, then click again.... I love Animal Collective.

  • I love this song.

  • oh wow - the intro almost made me cry, it's so beautiful.

  • awesome song!!!

  • Break it on down the line, Jerry... I say Good Lode! Look at him shredding around 3:40 til 4:10. Woooh

  • Sky... Whoa I walk.

  • Respond to this video... deadly video to a great song, props on the video i love the epic slow motion aged jerry garcia at the start

  • Super! Brings it all back! :)))))

  • Listenin' for the secret, searching for the sound.....

  • Great video for a great song!

  • awesome song! Euphoria.

  • where can I find the song, Wake of the Flood Studio version

  • such great muscianship, too bad everything is auto shit now adays

  • Nicely done, thanks

  • Nice job .....Thanks for postin'

  • On my best outdoor LSD trip, this sound provided the perfect soundtrack to a peak moment. It actually created it.

The jam section, the subtle electronics, a blue Summer sky and the electric colors stretching across it.

  • phil lesh wrote and sang this....why isnt he in this video?

  • this aint a jerry song

  • I would like to give some credit to the late underrated Keith Godchaux for the lovely piano runs in the last two minutes of this, Phil's utterly perfect masterpiece of composition and message of peace, continuity and love.

  • Sing one, Phil!

  • I would like to thank Animal collective for showing me this song its great

  • I have good memories hearing this song. Bein in the adorondacks, sweet incense smell, being young and free without a care in the world. I need to start listening to the Dead more again

  • a great song to drum along with

  • phil penned this masterpeice as well as sings it

  • Comment removed

  • Phil Lesh sings this song....Give the dude some credit and post some footage or pictures of him. Surprised nobody as commented about that yet.

  • 1:17 is where animal collective samples the song.

  • The most beautiful song in the world. Please try to bear it and check the arrangement, instruments and lyrics please.

  • Very nice job.. thank you

  • At 4:13 I am looking right into the face of God, and he/she says, "it's gonna be alright."

  • Gread Tune! Reminds me of an old friend, played this one over and over again, on LP (Mars Hotel) Can't help but think of him. Good times!! Peace Out!!!!!

  • yes finally...wow this is it....the dead...the bestest and you did it good so good.....shite im crying like a dog

  • I LOVE this MF-ing song! This is to the Grateful Dead what "Hey Jude" is to the Beatles!

If I were to commit suicide, I would (A) get extremely DRUNK and (B) play "Unbroken Chain" on a continuous-loop.

IE, music from F-ing **HEAVEN** !!!!

  • i noticed Jerry's guitar has more than one cable going in (looks like 3....)

    anyone knows why is that?

  • @golbis One is connected toGod

  • 1 was a standard guitar cord, 1 was a synth feed, 1 was an effects loop (stereo cord running to his pedals & back between the tone & volume controls of the guitar)

  • @CozmikCowboy makes sense, thanks

  • @0037LaCkEySpLuEy You gotta know where to look.

  • 1:17 Animal Collective

  • Lovely song.

  • it is a very nice video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • one of my favorite numbers... sending it to a dear friend & love xoxo

  • Animal collective is definently the only band worthy enough to sample this

  • 1:18 - 1:20 ftw ;D

  • nice video, thanks for postin'. I normally only dig the actual live footage of the boys, but this was really nicely done! Thanks!

  • I'm OK with the heavy use of Jerry on a Phil song because I wish the Jerry in the video was playing like he was back in 74. So I imagine the 94 Jerry is playing this and a few times Jerry's licks almost sync with the track. Don't let anyone bring you down.

  • @vpaczkowski the playing in 92-95 is my favourite!!

  • God, I miss the feeling!!!

  • that synth sound you call "not decoded" or whatever is the attempt to replicate the sound of the collective, actually to rather close regards,

yet if you've never heard it......

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO! well put together, good graphics to the music..

thats Donna Gottschalk singing, yes? I remember in 78 or 79 when her and Kieth were killed in a car accident. forgive me if i have wrong info. It sounds like the same female vocals on Terripin station...

  • @johncorsino Only Keith was killed, was driving alone. Donna is alive and well.

  • this song always makes me cry, especially with all those pics of jerry

    RIP brother

  • love that jerry used an electric it goes so good with the bass and effects, anyone who even questions the effects for a second hasnt smoked enough weed before listening, peace..

  • shit, that solo almost synchs in nicely withe audio. outstanding. see you on tour......

  • yeah~ phil for sure. this is his song, and its sorta weirtd with liberty cut into it...

  • @portersmith100 yeah it shoulda had a Phil Zone but good anyway

  • Let's see more of Phil. After all, he's the one singing this. Oh and by the way, does anyone know why they felt the need to include those wierd synthesizer chirps in the instrumental part. I like the use of the jet engine sound, but the synthesizer chirps or sweeps make it sound like part of the audio wasn't decoded properly, but then again maby thats the point. Lastly I think an acoustic piano would sound better than an electric one here. Does anyone else out there have any views on this?

  • 1:16-1:20 Animal Collective sample

  • man they just dont make songs this good these days.

    Gotta love the dead!

  • Awesome song. Brings back good memories. seeing polar bears, sexy shadow girls, lizards walking on the roof and colourful peacock feathers in the trees all day. Good times my friend. Great video.

  • @aPpLeJuIcE37RainLucy now that sounds like a long strange trip...

  • @BluezBro604 Lol it was. It was a great day.

  • WHAT WOULD I WANT, SKY?

  • if ever a saint existed in my lifetime it was jerry

there will never be a day this song goes unplayed in my heart.

  • i agree brother, jerry was a man of honour.

  • wow. apostolic succession, anyone?

  • why do you show jerry when its phils song??

  • Yes I know I realize that, I showed Jerry though cause he is my favourite out of them all! And I couldn't find any good clips of phil to put up that would have looked good.

  • @gteck2000 but its intense isnt it he has such strong visual impact everytime i look at him on stage( to see jerry while phil sings)

  • ~Hey i like jerry!

  • @gteck2000 I think that the song Unbroken Chain's lyrics suggest another look at one of the most amazing musicians to hang with us. Jerome Garcia.

  • @gteck2000 love this i gotta get high to this phill you did thiss right...... but jerry you still #1 .... love u jerry.....

  • listen when your high

    amazingg!

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEOOOOOEOEOOO

  • 1:18

    "what would I want, sky"

Amazing sample from Animal Collective, considering that's even what's being sang!

  • @alfaripopo "sky, what would i want..." looped like that. But "what would i want? sky" is a fantastic song.

  • the lyrics are actually "Willow sky, whoa, I walk and wonder why" but it sounds close enough. "what would i want? sky" is an amazing song, i must add

  • @alfaripopo walk and wonder why?

  • @mkonjhg1 I often wonder why they say "Love your Brother" but you will catch it if you try

  • such a beautiful song. nice and psychedelic :)

  • Such a good video.

    Can't get enough!!

And this is one of the Deads best songs. I love listening to this!
