Hmmm the 2.8 is and the 4L as I hear the 4L is sharper !, when spending this much on glass all comes down to quality... looks like Im still needing facts
@moomoomooism I think that is reasonably clear, if you consider that the Canon 70-200 L 2.8 IS USM MK 2 lens is at least 1500 Euro more, than the one I've presented. The 2.8 with IS is like the flagship of middle telezoom lenses Canon offers, so it'll be better, sharper, more expensive!
Im just 14 Years old right now and so i have Not that much money, so do u think i should buy this lense or the tamron sp 70-300 with image stabilazer??
So many guys Said that the tamron is very sharp an the is Works great but the Canon is still a L lense but about 200 € (im from gemany) more expensive...
@Mo3run Thanks! Again that depends a lot on what you want to shot with the lens. If you just would like to take photos, I would always recommend the Canon lens, but if you want to shoot videos aswell, the Tamron is (because of the IS) a really good choice. If you are a bit tight on money I would propably decide for the Tamron, because it is a good lens for sure! As a matter of fact, I think that the L lenses are sometimes overrated! I hope I could help you a bit.
Nice review Jahn. I'm considering buying this lens. I've got about the same gear as you do (i.e. the Canon EOS 550D with the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens and the EF 50mm F/1.8 II prime lens). Also thinking about selling the 'useless' kit lens.
Too bad the EF 50mm F/1.8 II doesn't have a ring-type USM. It would have come in handy when trying to freeze motion and getting a fast focus when I'm taking pictures of people getting thrown while practising Aikido indoors.
this is a great lense for outdoors..but not for indoor because of it aperture cannot open as wide for indoor photography..but that is not a big problem because this my favourite lense that i have..GO CANON..
THANKS FOR YOUR REVIEW! please help me! I know this might sound not so professional! but i'm trying to decide whether to buy 200mm f2.8 l non-is or this lens! help!!! Oh and i'm not a amateur ! i just want some opinions!
@THEHAMM3T It is really difficult to compare those two lenses, because they don't have a lot in common. I think that the 200mm prime lens will beat the 70-200mm zoom lens considering the sharpness and the depth of field at length. Moreover, does the higher aperture allow you to take better pictures inside rooms, where there aren't perfect light situations. Of course you are a lot more flexible with the 70-200mm zoom lens, which is the fact why I would prefer it always.
I have been waiting for a decent review of this lens for months. I am shortly getting a Canon 60D as an upgrade from a old 450d. I already have got a 18-55 kit lens, a 55-250 zoom and a 17-85 lens. Would you say this is a good choice of lens.
@hayabusakid100 Concerning photography I would always recommend the 70-200mm L lens, there is no second opinion. But if you want to take videos as well you should probably have a closer look at the 70-300mm lens because of it's image stabilization. If you don't mind taking videos with a tripod go for the 70-200mm L lens, you won't regret it!

I plan on shooting video indoor and outdoor(alot of handheld/shoulder mount) for various work. Even though I'm on a tight budget, I guess its safe to say that I need to pay extra for the IS and the extra cost of a 2.8 over the f4?
@masuda316 Yeah of course the IS version is much more, but probably it is worth the money if one is shooting a lot videos (and photos as well) handheld. In my opinion the f/2.8 versions are something for professionals and not suitable for amateurs (because of there price, not there stunning quality).
@masuda316 Go for IS. No question. With IS off, this lens wobbles around with even the most steady hands. This really brings attention to the rolling shutter. Not good. With IS on, it's like shooting with a Steadicam.
thanks for the input! oh and one other thing. i just realized that im shooting with a cropped camera (60d). the magnification would be to extreme on my camera compared to what it would be on a full frame (5d) wouldnt it? is there a suitable replacement with a constant aperature, nice depth of field, and sharp image for a crop camera like mine? maybe i should try the lenses out to see. sorry i'm still on a learning curve with the knowledge of lenses.
@masuda316 Yeah that would make a difference. I shoot on a 5D so 70–200 is a really good length. For you it'll be more like 110–320(ish) I think. Depends what you want to do with it. I would say f/4 vs f/2.8 isn't as important as Image Stabilisation. You might want to consider that the 2.8 is much heavier if that's a factor. If I were you, I'd rent it for a day if you're unsure. It's a lot of money to spend and there's nothing like trying it yourself.
Having had this lens before upgrading to the f2.8 IS MkII I can confirm that it is a fantastic lens... and a real bargain for an L-series lens!
However, it's not as tough as you would first think. Mine was in a lens pouch which slipped out of my camera bag (while on the ground) and it fell almost 5cm (yes 5cm!!) onto the ground. I was horrified to discover that a piece of the metal white body casing directly next to the mounting flange had split off showing how unbelievably thin the metal was!

@nupac15 It is really good for portraits, but a shorter focal length would be fine as well. Look out for a prime lens, the deliver a better sharpness so your portrait shots become a lot better.
@grafititurtle Using a tripod it will be great. Without a tripod there might be some unsharp shots because of the longer shutterspeed but nonetheless it will perform very good.
@ExoticCarspotters You can do all, but if you do some fast shoots the pictures might be not a 100% sharp. The IS just controls the shaking of your hand, so you won't need a tripod all the time.
Excellent Review! By far the best one i've seen for this lens. I have the same exact same camera as you, although mine is called a t1i. I plan on getting this lens soon and after seeing the quality of photos you took, I doubt I will be disappointed.
i love the way you presented this video, i watch dozens of reviews but this is what i want...nice video...oh nice picture too...especially the cat and the portrait of the rider.... even my Girl friend want to buy this lens, not with the IS...
@S8OR When I first got into DSLR photography I thought it was unusual that some of canon's Lenses were white & not all black to match their camera bodies but now I think that would be so boring!
@Steve181 They make them white because most of this lenses are meant to be used outdoors for long periods of time, while being white they reflect the sunlight instead of absorbing it.
@S8OR That's your opinion. I think the lens is beautiful to look at. If someone turned their nose up at a Canon L series telephoto lens at a photo shoot it's their problem that they are ignorant. If you see a group of pro photographers shooting celebrities, sporting events etc a good percentage will be using a L series Canon lens looking much the same as this one because they produce some of the best photographs.
Its almost the Same on every lens at 200mm and above. I did some shots a F/11 look similar. But you don't get that nice Bokeh on Cheap lenses, because they don't use 8 aperture-blades.
@JustinJ314 Because he is using a 200mm lens with very near subjects. When you are working so close to your subject for example with macros, using a wide aperture most of the time results in a extreme shallow depth of field.Macro photographers often use smaller apertures like f8 and above to get the desired subject completely in focus.
@JustinJ314 it has to be with the distance of the subject...if you use a 50mm at 5.6 and your focus is close to the subject you can still get the background to go out of focus...but if you shoot like that and are far away from your subject then the background won't go out of focus that much
aahh... finally something different , we were bored with the clichéd opening the box and stuffs. Nice one mate. keep up the good job, expecting nice videos from you.
