  • Well when I was 12, this movie was fucking bad ass!!

  • I guess I gotta read the book now. The movie was really good though.

  • I was 8 when I first saw this. I'm 21 now. This is the only horror/monster movie to freaking terrify the life out of me to this day. Book was better.

  • This review lost all credibility the moment I heard 1995 as Jurassic Park's release. Shame on you.

  • Wanna know why the monster in this movie is SOOOOOOOO BADASS!!!?? Simply because of Stan Winston...

  • They butchered the story for the movie :| The Kathoga was the tribe and Mbwun was the beast being the major fuck up...

  • Cathoga VS. King Kong!

  • It is a nice movie. Yeah.. yeah.. it has action. It has some decent acting of these well not A-actors. But neither Z-actors. It is all there... it is nice. Not to mention :) They don't show the monster that much.

  • The book is better

  • And dose eny one no the name of that alien movie were there working on an asteroid wat's heading for earth. they whent to mine it then destroy it but in mining it they found a metal box in the center of the asteroid and inside the box they found dead human remains and wierd writting on the walls and also on the walls they found a fossil of a giant alien wat came back to life because it was exposed to air dose eny one no the name if so can u tell me please thank's.

  • This movie is in't old it was only out in the 90.s and i heard there was going to be a number two eny info on that thanks.

  • good review i read the book and i was let down by the movie as usual. they should have showed more of the beast.

  • gotta love teh kothoga

  • The book was amazing, and the movie lived up to expectations from the book!!! 5 stars!!!

  • Even though the book is far superior to the movie, the movie is still enjoyable to watch. I do agree with the comments about the character Pendergast missing from the film. I was sorely disappointed that he was omitted from the script. I had even wondered what actor would be chosen to play the part. I see it as a missed opportunity on the part of the studio heads to have a successful film series featuring the character.

  • @Centaurmaiden Yeah, I think that Cabinet of Curiosities would make a GREAT movie.

  • I was looking for movie which i saw at tv, unfortunately last part, dont know the name.Thought that was Mimic 3 but as it turned out not to.So what i saw there was

super organism down in the sewers under small american town he somehow control people, or he consum them and then evoked their images.Few scientis or what, were at the end in some fancy techologic van, full of computers and stuff. and they trick that being with some psychologilac trap.they force his to appear at street.NAME OF FILM?

  • @6Bene I think u mean phantoms with ben afflec.

  • @trex12evangelion

yes, i watch it already, thanks anyway

  • what about the predator the monster and movie was great and i like him more than the alien and king kong but less godzilla could u do a review on predator 1, 2 or 3 like them thats how big a pedator fan i am

P.S. i made this comment after seeing your review of the relic

  • 1993

  • Oh yeah, I forgot, in the book his name is not Kothaga (that IS how it's spelled). That is the name of the lost tribe. The monster is called Mbwun, a satan-like lizard god.

  • the book is very good Mbwun means ''he who walks on all fours".

Kothoga is the name of the tribe

  • I'm reading the book right now. It says right on the cover "Better than Crichton's Jurassic Park" -some magazine that I don't remember the name of. I need to see the movie!!!

  • "Cathoga" is Mbwun? The book was absolutely amazing. A total thrill ride. The movie... not so much. In typical Hollywood fashion they destroyed the book to the point that no future Aloysius X. L. Pendergast movies will ever be made. And that is the real crime of this Hollywood sin.

  • "Cathoga is a bad-ass!".; I said the same thing when I first saw this movie.

  • Comment removed

  • I finished the book less than an hour ago and heard there was a movie about it 10 minutes ago. I freaked out and looked for reviews.

I am SUPER disappointed. Relic was amazing - Pendergast and Smithback were two of the most perfect characters and aren't even in the movie. Mbwun named Kathoga? That is the name of the TRIBE, you idiot director. And also, they did a great job of ruining the plot twist at the end of the book. What a horrible representation of an amazing book.

  • i know Right

what happened to Pendergast taking out Mbwun with his 45. with a eye shot while Margo confused him with a flash light

  • The only reason why I really don't like this movie is because they completely left Pendergast out of it.. I've read every book in the series and this book was my favorite but Pendergast, I think, is the heart of it and without him.. the movie isn't good

  • I agree. This movie definitely got overlooked. It had great use of light, an orignal monster that was designed by the same guy who created predator and aliens. It really deserves more credit

  • The movie was overlooked because in comparison to the novel, it sucked. They made many large changes such as (and horrifically) cutting out Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast and William Smithback, Jr. If you watched it first, it was a pretty good movie, but if you're like me and loved the book, you'll hate the movie.

  • @GDG4ever

I missed Pendergast and Smithback in the movie too!

What i also didnt like was the monsters design and name: in the book it was called Mbwun and well it´s look...sure it´s badass, but not like its said in the book, and if i imagine how it looks like in the book,i like the books version better.

  • No Pendergast?

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember when i was 7 i was scared of this movie and then i loved it and i watch it like 10 times.

  • Read the book first before you waste your time with this sad excuse of a movie. The first chapter will have you on the edge of your seat; wanting to read faster and faster... brilliant writing. But as the norm; Hollywood jacks up another great scifi/suspense with cheap theatrics and really bad acting. The Mbwun is human/lizard... since when would that combination looks like a large ant lion with the face of "Predator"?

  • Is Agent Pendergast in this film? IMO he is what makes the Preston/Child books so good. The only character I like better is his evil brother Diogenes.

  • I found this NOT SCARY and BORING.

  • so many overlooked good movies

i'm always in the mood for some gory horror movies :D

  • this movie was awesome... I loved it xD

  • Despite the book is far superior, this is actually a GOOD MOVIE!! It just scared the shit out of me

  • I saw The Relic when i was five! That movie is my favourite Sci-fi and will always be! I know all the lines by heart.

  • @DarkAbsol8811 dude same. Read the book. its damn good.

  • @babaoriley8 I read it. It was awesome too!

  • kathoga reminds me of one of the monsters from resident evil 4....the right hand thta u fight down in the sub leve sewers

  • the relic the movie is the scariest monster movie ive ever seen, and ive seen ALOT.

  • @FortuneNeko ahhh hello silent hill beats em all no doubt

  • @FortuneNeko ahhh hello silent hill beats em all no doubt

  • The book was fantastic. This movie wasn't unfortunately.

  • Actually, the monster itself was called Mbwun in the book, and the tribe it protected was called Kothoga.

And John Whitney is actually John Whittlesey.

I loved the book, but I was really disappointed when I saw the movie... :C

The main character, Pendergast, isn't even mentioned in the movie !

There are a lot of mistakes in the movie, but it was good one.

  • Ah thankyou. This is an absolutley Epic movie. Still one of the best horror/monster flicks ever made.

  • Jurassic Park came out in 1993. This guy has some incorrect information.

  • @jg2904 yeah he lost all credibility right there

  • @jg2904 ...um no it came out 1995... don't know where you got 1993

  • @Manticon5 ...um no it came out in June, 1993. I'll make this simple, type "Jurassic Park" into a Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. search engine. Some of your top results will likely include Wikipedia, IMDB, as well as many others. All of them will say, "Jurassic Park (1993)" or something to that effect because the film did, in fact, come out in 1993. You can also go to Oscars.org, if you don't find the previous sites credible. The results will be the same, because it came out on June 11, 1993!

  • Comment removed

  • @Manticon5 No it was '93. I recall that distinctly because it was the only time in my life where my folks actually pulled me out of school early to go see a movie!

  • @jg2904 LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Nice review

    men

    thanks!

    =)

  • Yes, Kathoga was really a beast, his relentless killing and charging was classic. But in the late 70's (79) there was a monster bear called "Katahdin" that was as vicious as this monster in the movie "Prophecy".

  • awesome review! i'm trying to finish the book before seeing the movie.

  • this is one of the scariest monsters iv seen even thoe it is kinda old

  • yo this ugly ass lookin creature scared the shit out of me. still till this day it scares me.

  • Kathoga is a BEAST! definately one of Stan Winston's best monsters.

  • Agreed.

  • I loved The Relic movie and the book, even though the movie is about 90% close to the book. And I have to add to this question: Where the f+++k is Pendergast? He's like a modern day Sherlock Holmes- educated and suave. If you want more Pendergast read the sequel to 'The Relic" entitled "Reliquary". And in the sequel, you won't believe who the evil guy turns out to be! And no, for those who read the book, it is not the scientist whom is mentioned in the epilogue.

  • I agree with the reviewer. I don't understand why it's so underrated, I saw the movie before I read the book so there's definitely something good about the movie that draws you in: atmosphere, monster & music. Actually it's better than your usual B flick, as it provides more logical explanation to Monster's existence, unlike other movies, and does a good job of creating suspense. Albeit, I wish they had kept the character of Pendergast like in the original script.

  • well, and where is Pendergast????

  • Jurassic Park actually came out in 1993

  • wasnt the first killing in the book two young boys

  • @dbucky616 : Yes... bet that would have went over like a iron balloon. Even though AVPR involved pregnant women and children; go figure.

  • I just recently watched "The Relic" and I had Ben Stiller and "A night at the museum" in the back of my head the whole time watching ;) The mauling and decaputations didn't really help ;)

  • The book is far much better and she wasn't into evolution rather she was an anthropologist, specialized in ethnopharmacology. This movie didn't do very much justice to the book, it was so- so.

  • I totally agree, and they also left one of my favorite characters (Pendergast) out of the movie as well.

  • Love Pendergast handsome, well dressed and intelligent. Not to mention the other main character!

  • but definetly watchable

  • the movie is so dark, the monster scenes are not shown too well

  • It seems like every good movie and game gets overlooked, while something lesser gets praised. That stinks, but I wanna see this movie! SOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tom sizemore has been nominated for Golden Globes, played leading roles in Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan, and that isnt and A list actor?? penelope ann miller and james whitemore arent unheard of either, and the guy that did the music did the music for the passion of christ, Stan winston did the creature aswell, I mean, stan winston is one of the biggest special effects names in hollywood (RIP), the films budget was $70,000,000 and it made $34,000,000 at the box office, not a b movie

  • This film is awesome, it was actually scary in some bits!

  • MIMIC with Jeremy Northam

  • IT IS NOT A FUCKING B-MOVIE!!!!

  • erm, STAN WINSTON studios did the kothoga, and tom sizemore is pretty famous, and it had a HUGE budget

  • no, Tom sizemore has been nominated for Golden Globes, played leading roles in Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan, and that isnt and A list actor?? ponelope ann miller and james whitemore arent exactly unheard of either, and the guy that did the music also did the music for the passion of christ, Stan winston did the creature aswell, I mean, stan winston is one of the biggest special effects names in hollywood (RIP), the films budget was $70,000,000 and it made $34,000,000 at the box office

  • oh, and some more reasons why this isnt a b-movie, b-movies arent even released in cinema nowadys, and b-movies credits last for 1-2 mins, the Relics credits last for 6 mins

  • @SWAGshow Nah, it's not a B movie, broseph!

  • @SWAGshow I think It's not, and A movie doesn't mean it has famous actors or famous producers or directors, It just means It has a very goo production and directing and story, and this movie has them all. I think this movie kicked asses when it came out.

  • @ThatKidJoel The "B" in B-movie doesn't necessarily stand for "BAD." I think that's the way you took it. SwagShow is correct in his assessment: The Relic is a b-flick, and a glorious one at that. :-D

  • I love this movie, I saw it when I was 9 and it scared me, but I loved it, I got it on DVD as soon as I could, so underrated, deserves more credit, great script, belivible acting, great special effects

  • thanks man might go buy/rent this next time i go out. :)

  • I have that movie and I liked it. Have to watch it again sometimes... =)

  • know if it's on DVD???? god this movie rocked!!! don't remember seeing the creature actually grabing the guys leg though. kick ass none the less.

  • yes its on dvd

  • I want to purchase this movie again. I remember enjoying my first viewing of it.

One thing i remember is that this movie is heavily shadow lighted. You need night vision to watch this movie. lol

That's not a complaint by the way. It really added to the movie.

    Great review.

  • lol this is neato review =D

  • great movie

  • Watched it, loved it !

  • Cool :D

  • @guilortha that means u did'nt read the book noob, Pendergast is not in the film is like harry potter without harry potter

  • I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't know if it's worth watching or not but the book was awesome.

  • lool ur 30reviews in 30dayz is going on at the same time as cinemassa's godzilla-thon.. its weird that both review featured godzilla??

  • alright,sounds frigging awesome!:D

and as ussual,i want the name of the song at the start lolz xD

  • Blood Stained by Judas Priest

  • I saw it and thought it was decent... not rly great in my opinion but it wasnt bad either, you should at least rent it as I did but I dont know if its worth bying.

  • heard of it, will cheack it out, as im loving the tick lol

  • chido

  • i remember this, this sure is a cool movie..

    thanks for the reminder!

  • If I remember correctly, this movie was released a little less then a month after Scream so I think that might have been the reason it got overlooked. I don't know why, though. Relic was all kinds of awesome. Excellent review and now, if you excuse me, I must go buy and add this movie to my collection.

  • JP came out in 1993, actually.

  • Relic now placed on my check list of movies on net fliks i must watch.

  • I heard about this movie but never saw it, I will definetly check it out now.

  • Sounds interesting... I might check the movie out. Are you planning to do a review on Megaman 9 as it came out today?

  • HMMmm Interesting. Will check this out. GReat reviews BTW.
