Whisky and Bourbon are two different things. This is bourbon. Kentucky is the only state that has Bourbon. Everyone else has whisky. The more aged the smoother it is. It is not just about proof, its about age. Get an old aged bourbon, 15-20 years or longer, and then taste it. THAT is smooth.
Knob Creek is not as smooth as he is making it seem, Knob Creek is more so famous of the oak taste.
Pappy Van Winkle is a great bourbon, and they just released a 23 y/o bourbon! Expensive, but great!
I don't want to doubt this nice man's knowledge but he seems to give no support for his opinions. Whiskey is smoother because of higher proof? Makers Mark is ultra-premium?
@cattnipp yeh...i dont agree with that at all....usually higher proof whiskies are higher quality ...but "smoothness"...comes from the aging...imho...if you aged an 80 proofer for 8 yrs....its prolly gonna be as smooth as a 90 or 100
If you want a PREMIUM bourbon, find a single barrel that has been aged at least 12 years.
Just like single malt scotch, the time spent aging in an oak barrel adds flavor and smoothness, the longer the aging the smoother and better the bourbon.
Best in my opinion is 'Pappy Van Winkle' 20yr old single barrel.
"Higher proof; smoother whiskey" - Kinda counterintuitive cause you expect the higher alcohol content to make the finish hotter, but I can speak from experience in saying that generally it is true - until you get to ridiculously high proofs like 120 plus. In the 80-110 range, this holds true with almost all whiskeys, including those pricey single malts out of Scotland. (The exception would be cheap ass brands that add grain alcohol to the mix, but branding restrictions should ferret them out.)
Knob Creek is priced around 29-40$, depending on your local retailer. It definitely stands out a lot more than the standard JB if you like to drink your whiskey straight or on the rocks. I think it's well-balanced, intricate yet not too singualr bourbon for cocktails. It coagulates quite nicely with coke, too.
makers mark fantastic Hilton hotel stock it.

I wish he had more to say about the product. Besides whats on the label, he doesn't give much insight into the individual whiskey.

@djidentity Sorry the designation for Bourbon is not state based.
By law, bourbon can be distilled anywhere in the U.S., but the vast majority of it is produced in Kentucky.
