I say listen to this guy, i live in christchurch new zealand and in the last 6 or so months we have had a 7.1 quake and a 6.3 (yes people have been killed). Scientists have drilled a 180 meter hole into the main alpine fault line and have discovered these rumbling sounds as dutchsinse has mention. Not only that deep in the fault it is continuously trembling. The plates are on the move again look at the earths land scape 200 million years ago compared to now, land mass on the move.

he's blowing this out of proportion, hundreds of earthquakes happen everyday, so its not surpriseing to see earthquakes on all the fault lines on the entire globe. Since the japan quake, which was really big, the plates are going to be moving a bit more than usual. People should be prepared for a quake, but not in a state of panic that the earth is in complete disarray

The way I understand it. When stress was building up in that fault just before the the big earthquake hit Japan, the stress caused the Eurasian plate was forced upwards. When all that stress was released, that brought the land back down to the level it was after the last time that fault ruptured. This is what caused the apparent sinking in Japan, as far as I know.

Some of this is misleading. In BC alone, we experience over 400 earthquakes per year. With only 365 days in a year, we are guaranteed one every day. 98% of them are in the 1-3 range and or extremely deep ... note, its not "felt". Another 1.5% there may be a slight 'whoopsie' feeling with only 1/2% we actually feel. Dont need to scare people on things that we shouldnt be scared about.

This is amazing research and a very neat presentation, however , regarding the content, its not a worrying ordeal. The fact that small seismic activity has increased is a good sign. This means the energy and pressure is being released in small bursts, rather than a sudden jump. The Earthquake in Japan ,as with many other enormous earthquakes like it, happened because the tectonic plates suddenly jumped (move) which creates the jolts and ripples we call shocks.
