As far as what certain counter-cultures "stand for", I'll give you a brief rundown: Punks are ALWAYS anti-authoritarian (weither is parents or government) regardless of what side of the political spectrum they're on. Traditional goth focuses on the artistic values of love, tragedy, and death. Rivetheads i.e. Cyber-goths lyrically and atmospherically serve social commentary on the corruption of humanity through greed and power, often set to the tone of a dystopic revolution.

I have a friend who dresses in pure black, and says she's "goth" but is one of the brightest, nicest, and most anti "goth" people I know. I tease her and call her "emo" because she doesn't strike one as a goth, as far as her personality goes, but she's definitely not "emo". currently, stereotypes seem to be crossing/melding.
With metalheads, it's very dependent on the genre they play. Black metal fans are fueled by reactionary religious/athiest/pagan/satanic movements against established religion aswell as a broad focus on tragedy that borrows heavily from the Gothic subculture, and heathy appreciation for native folklore and wantingness to return to a more naturalistic and primitive times.
"Prep" isn't a sub-culture, it's the default, so it doesn't really figure into this discussion.
And I'm not trying to attack you either, but regardless as to weither you concider yourself emo, this music is most definatly!
