Left two of these on the shed roof. A month later there were literally hundreds of wasps in them, it was like a bee holocaust.

yup, mix water, borax and sugar, three naturally non-toxic things, unless you consider other insects, put a jar of it near a wasp nest for a day or so and take it away, the nest will be dead in a week or so.

Answer - very old home-made strawberry jam. And other kinds of jam. Plus some water...It needs to be gooey so it's like swimming in treacle :)
