  • i think that the electric guitar was a poor choice.

  • dats the english flag

  • Ive seen this episode like 4 times, and I still don't see what the big deal about raising the flag is, theres like 20 ppl in the town

  • @wakeoftheflood2 in the book there are alot more people and attackers in the city so it was a bigger deal for them to raise it and therefore spread the rumor of the gonfalon being raised throughout Spain

  • @wakeoftheflood2 They ran out of money. Some of those people, were poster boards.

  • this takes sibling rivalry to a whole new level

  • it's almost like the worst video game mission ever. "Hold the Church until the Resistance can raise the banner to signal the revolution!" and you fight waves of baddies for like 15 minutes lol

  • @pitatapiu During Desert Shild, (not Storm), a Humvee, & four soldiers, on patrol, entered the Saudi town of Kopji (no spell check). On the border with occupied Kuwait, it was deserted, until a S%&T load of Iraqi's dropped in for a visit. Uninvited, of course. They hid their vehicle, and, took up residence in a tall building, (possibly a Mosque, but I ain't saying). The called in artillery, and gave good intel, until relieved the next day. That's what you call a "Huggies check". It does happen.

  • Teresa's pistols are SO fake!!!

  • St JAmes and St George FTW!

  • 0:48 looks very similar to where perkins was stabbed in a later episode

  • I cannot understand why the author(if it was in the book) or the manuscript writer would have children come into the middle of a battle and see all of those dead men. What purpose could he/she have to place them there at that time? Anyone?

  • @Songsmirth Don't be such a "Sally" lol. Its a fictional book/film

  • @Songsmirth Irony, ain't it?

it also reminds the audience there *are* townspeople there, since we don't see any til after the fighting. the 70's film The Man Who Would Be King had a similar scene, but there have been many scenes like that i'm sure.

  • Flag's in pretty good shape to be 1000 years old

  • @CarolinasPGApro In the book the young lady resewed the old gonfalon into some new silk to create a new flag.

  • is it broken or am i broken?

  • Suspense...and then....JARRING GUITAR CHORDS!

  • LOL 1 on 1 sword fight, only in fiction.

  • So the french try to stop them from raising the flag by riding in loops for them to to shoot at. Hmm so this is where they got the AI for empire total war.

  • @frozencanadian try darthmod ultimate commander mate it really makes empire a better game, so much so id say etw with darthmod is better then napoleon total war!

  • @TheNikzaw Agree completely. :D Got it a while back and Darthmod made the game so much better in every way. Even a fix for the bloody terrible music. But thanks for the recommendation.

  • @frozencanadian i just finished a world domination starting as chrimean khante on custom game, i didnt complete the task but i did pretty well, half of india and a large european empire, plus 2 colonies in americas by 1799! :D

  • @frozencanadian Well really, cavalry would be of limited use against well emplaced men in tight city streets. Scattered across an open field however the riflemen would have been ridden down in moment.s

  • @SyntaxErr00r True, but your missing the specific situation. They are garrison troops for that area. Surely you would expect them to proceed into the town dismounted, with rifles in a somewhat organized fashion. Or at the very least to have dismounted once they made contact with enemy on roof tops in the town.

  • @frozencanadian Assuming they were dragoons armed with sabre and carbine and not chasseurs a cheval or hussars armed with sabre and a horse pistol.

It's all moot I suppose, as Bernard Cornwall does place a large number of French infantry in the town leading to a much more dramatic defense of the city so why couldn't they do the same for the tv series?

  • @SyntaxErr00r Budget.

This town set is repeatedly used as EVERY major town in the series xD

  • why did they light the hay on fire?

  • What's ironic is that the 'evil' brother with the French was right. The 'good' brother did in fact represent reaction and ignorance and bigotry, and the winning side would keep Spain poor and ignorant and priest ridden for the rest of the 19th century and a good chunk of the 20th century, right up to Francisco Franco's death in 1975, when Spain finally moved out of the 17th century.

  • @ryoushii

yep, but that's history for you.

  • @ryoushii well said

  • @ryoushii Napoleon could never understand why people might prefer their own bigotry, poverty and ignorance to his enlightened and rational, but foreign, rule. I'm not saying they were right but Spanish resistance to French rule was widespread and supported by the majority of the population. The French had 400,000 men in Spain and most of those were fighting the guerillas. (Wellington had about 60000 men)

  • @ryoushii

It wasn't quite in the 17th century, but the brother on the side of the French was correct: Napoleon had a habit of improving and streamlining the governments and laws of placed he conquered.

Briton only helped Navarre and Spain because they were afraid of how powerful Revolutionary France had become, akin to the proxy wars during the Cold War.

As Sharpe pointed out, he honestly doesn't care: he's there to stay alive with his men and get paid: ideology doesn't matter to him.

  • @ryoushii True. Though the French did have a bad reputation as occupiers. Laying with the enemy, even for a good ideal, may still be the wrong choice. Sadly in such a situation, both sides are wrong.

  • @ryoushii yeah but it was the French...

  • @ryoushii And that's what I like about this programme. The 'bad guys' sometimes make a lot of sense and are easily relatable.

  • @ryoushii Agreed. Unfortunately, the only requirement needed to be an Ally, is to have a common enemy. Then, and now.

  • @ryoushii That is a very common yet incorrect sentiment from some one not very familiar with Spanish history.

  • Strange isn't it. At football matches English people fo mad over the same flag lol.

  • is it just me that found the scene with the boys singing in the church who are well aware that a full-blown fight is going on outside extremely funny...

  • @stupidintellect90 No, not just you, I found it funny too. It didn't happen like that in the book.

  • Cavalry Charge in Urban Area ...argh bad Comand great Movie

  • @Rougeguard its just a bad idea

  • 'when you burry me no priests' that is the best death wish ever (im an atheist)

  • the electric guitar is a really bad choice... it just kind of takes you out of the experience...

  • damn the e-guitars

  • damn the e-guitars

  • curse this electrical guitar music. this music belongs in 'top gun'.

  • i could so imagine my self on the roof of a church, just barely dodging a shot and saying , "Cheeky Bastard, then telling my comrade were he was so he could shoot him

  • Best type of warfare ever fought.

  • lol. At 0:035 the horse and rider almmost hit the statue!! XD

  • so much hip-firing...that's against doctrine

  • mhh... indeed... but then again entering an enemy held village without plan and wondering across the market square in broad daylight was already quite... uhmm... missing the right word... lets say 'unorthodox'... one could even say stupid. Besides: They are supposed to be cracks at what they do, yet decide to fight horsemen in a melee battle, only at facing defeat seeking the higher ground...

Then again its only budget entertainment ; )

  • Ohhh, Harper I could kiss you for that genuflection in the heat of battle.

  • It's a low budget movie for a telly series. Special Effects Section's job is to convince us for a moment to travel through time and space and lose ourselves in the drama.

I just spent three days watching the entire series of Sharpe's Rifles. Now, I'm going to read the books.

I'll devote my spare time to reading the Shape's Series until I can afford to buy the DVD Series.

  • How sad

  • 4:39 teresas pistol looks like carved wood

  • it dose look like it, what the hell, she used a real pistol in the rest of the movie, why did they suddenly decide to give her a wooden one for a few seconds of footage?

  • Fake pistol = no real bullet wounds in Sean Bean's back.

  • because it is carved wood.

  • they can use real pistols and not put bullets in them, so the shots are harmless

  • @nooo8oooo

you still need to get black powder use allowed for every single person who fires etc (rules etc), not to mention there is still the danger of the powder going bad and not working or worse hurting the person using it,

  • Friggin brilliant idea to use cavalry in urban combat. One squad of grenadiers would've made confetti out out of the riflemen

  • Considering that his budget was entirely based on taking over other countries and stealing their stuff, I'm thinking that Napoleon wasn't exactly an exemplar of sustainability.

  • The "Revolutionary" French were the Soviet Russia of their time. Failed ideas, failed nation. They still haven't recovered from executing their aristocracy.

  • take that science and reason!

  • Well, given that science and reason were represented by Napoleon, I'd take my chances with poetry and magic. But man, what a goofy ending. Yeah, yeah, I know the book isn't ever exactly like the movie, but they could've made it a little more convincing here.

  • You've got to give Napoleon some credit, man...

  • Hahaha, I agree entirely.

Napolean Vs Magic! I would take magic in a second.

I haven't read this novel, i only just found out that there were movie's.

But by God, Sean bean and Brian Cox... Its good enough.

  • Yeeeyy, the grannies have rissen and slaugterd the french...Hussa :o))))

  • In the book, the plot is way more complex and intriguing with a shocking climax. The video is too plain and simple minded. I wonder why they never stick to the story, the video gets 4/10 compared to to the book which 10/10.

  • Because a book always has to be simplified and adapted for film. The two media are very different. It's ridiculous and ignorant to always complain that a film "isn't like the books".

  • Also they had a tiny budget for such a bold production, this was afterall the first sharpe movie. they had to cut the number of scenes and locations to a minimum to get it done.

  • Sharpe is nothing less than a Napoleonic era commando! Absolutely love this series!!! :D

  • Ditto, 95th Rifles for the win, ;D.

Gotta love the Chosen showing respect in the chapel/church while they're fighting, xD.

  • I like how the people rise up after all the work has been done.

  • The electric rock guitar really adds to the mood of a 19th century movie.

  • I'm almost certain you're being sarcastic, but I agree :P Sharpe isn't a historical character he's a Napoleonic era rambo! The corny electric guitar just adds to his badassery..

  • Well the electric guitar is a nice touch but i think that its better than beating drums every episodes

  • lol

  • Entertaining but cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeesy

  • yeah its dripping with cheese.

  • Harper's a good Catholic

  • french helmets are stupid

  • ohmygawd! I love the accents!

  • Really good rifles they have.....nut when do they reload ??

  • lol@the flag of Santiago. Basically the English flag rolled up a bit so the cross of St. George is slightly to the left.

  • I counted over 20 deaths of French chevaliers, yet the courtyard seems strangely empty of bodies...

  • They probably only have about a dozen Froggy uniforms so the actors get "resurrected" very quickly

  • "cheeky bastard!"

    "which one cooper?"

    "left, 3 o'clock"

    BANG, BANG

    "that'll teach him"

    lol I love it

  • How great would a Sharpe video game be?!

  • that wud b amazing!

  • @tommytoxen A Sharpe game would suck, those guns take a long time to reload. Though, they do appear in many mods in Napoleon: total war

  • @ltflak id say a sharp video game if done properly would id say be like the game where you can control heros of the ancient world.

  • @tommytoxen There is a sharpe game out it's called Napoleon total war.

  • @tommytoxen it would be interesting they would have to find a way of making the slow guns work alongside the alot of melee combat but using the sabre would pone

  • @tommytoxen

What kind of game did you think of? I'm imagining something like Mass Effect maybe. Third Person, well done shoot-out/action gameplay mechanics and intriguing dialogues. Not so sure about the RPG elements though...

By the way: LOL @ 0:37 - gotta be the third or so Wilhelm Scream by now.

  • @tommytoxen yeah, if you can find a way around having to reload after every time you shoot your sodding rifle, and still survive.

  • @tommytoxen

    it's called napoleon total war

  • @tommytoxen It's called "Mount&Blade" with the 1805 Peninsula War mod.

  • @tommytoxen it would be great, just reloadinng would have to be sped up though, im not gonna wait a whole minute just for three rounds! :P

  • just stupid and dumb when at last raised that flag, then bunch of people came from nowhere showed up and "HURRAY", wow nice show....WTF. that's all the way just for this???

  • What does Cooper say at 2:05?

  • Thanks for posting!!!!!

Could you possiblely post Sharpe's Company? PLEASE!!!

  • sharpes gold would be sooo much better,i have all of the sharpe books and i think that is the best and would love to see it here!!!!

  • Well thank you, thank you and indeed thank you!
