make sure your bow is parallel to the bridge while youre playing, and make sure youre not sliding the bow all over the strings i.e on top on the strings rather than firmly into them to get a good tone. im really bad at explaining things, but i hope that helps :) lol

theres also a video by eHow that talks about bowing techniques and how to get the right sound and such :)
