How many of you, when you got older, found that the name "Dick Strong" was Hilarious?!? Didn't know anything when I was kid, but when I became a teen,.. Gigantor was funny just because of "Dick Strong"
I watched this when I was 3 - 4 years old in Nigeria. The only other cartoon was Felix the Cat and this rocked! When we came back to England, no one knew it at all. Disappointing, but so great to see it again even if there is only one episode in You Tube and the opening credits! Anyone know where other episodes can be found?
I seem to remember some sort of Hanna-Barbera knock off, that had a kid and a giant robot, that I think he kept in a closet. I think he had a similar flying technique.
They aired in America in black and white. A lot of changes were made and a lot of episodes left out but I think they would have kept it in color if it had been made that way.
This used to be shown a few years ago on Cartoon Network VERY early on weekday mornings, this and Astro Boy (as part of the final hour of "Adult Swim"). Nowadays, Cartoon Network actually has shows with no animation whatsoever, and absolutely none of the vintage stuff they used to show. Come to think of it, Boomerang doesn't show any of the vintage stuff either, except for The Flintstones, Jetsons and Scooby-Doo.
I was up at like 4 AM at a bro's house and they played the shit out of Wacky Races, Yogi Bear, A few of those other Hana Barbera ones, and Thundar The Barbarian.
@elc1960 Cartoon Network is now crap. I'm only 15, but "old" cartoons for me where things like Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Labratory, and the Powerpuff Girls. Now, what they show is crap. They don't even give Courage the Cowardly Dog anymore. Luckily, they give a lot of these cartoons on Boomerang, but not anything thay you described as "vintage." Sadly, cartoons are slowly wasting away.I feel sad for the generation after mine (like my 4 year old brother). Beiing raised on computer-animated shows. 8(
I subscribe to both Netflix and Blockbuster online. So this is not a random NF bashing post. But Blockbuster Online has real customer service you can email. Only reason I'm saying this is to encourage fans, even if you don't do BB online, to write into them and express how much you miss Retro toons like this and that it would be cool if they would get more in their inventory. Don't worry about telling them if you're a subscriber, just write in. Then one place will notice the other and follow.
Loved this as a kid!! We had some bad-assed cartoons, along with the 8th Man, Captain Scarlet, Johnny Quest, Speed Racer.........man we had it pretty good. Set the tone for all that is today!
For some reason I had this in my head tonight and of course YouTubed it. LIke studiosinger, I'm reeling from having heard it for the first time in, surely, 40 or more years. Still gives me shivers.

Need help. I remember a show when i was a kid i could swear was called "Gigantor". The show was in color though and the giant machine was blue with numbers on the side of its arm and a small boy controlled the robot with a controller on the ground. Anyone know of this show? Thanks
when i was in elementary school way back in the 70's this was my favorite show. tv was black and white then. i never realized until now how bad the theme song sounds...
When I started school in 1969 Gigantor was all I thought about for the whole day. Or if I did think about anything else it was how it related to Gigantor and Jimmy Sparks. I think I drove a lot of people mad; even Mum and I used to sing the song together when the show was on after school. Cordial, Tic-toc biscuits and Gigantor. Bliss. I still think he is the greatest.
@Poncho389 Sorry, I have to disagree with you. True, Gigantor is big, very strong and can fly but he has one great fault. He is not alive and can't think or reason. This would give any Transformer of equal size a huge advantage in a fight.
@Steve17010 you are right, but I have to stay with my sixties tech haha. Even though Im old, Ilike Transformers movies too. I used to run home from school to watch Gigantor @ 3 oclock. Good times as a kid in the sixties/seventies.
@cc527 Hahahaha your are probably right , it was my favorite show ever... but cut me a little slack. None of this is reality was just having a little fun.
@cc527 well C,that would be yes and no,yes u are right if "Gigantor" is not brought up to the standards of the short attention span and video game knuckle heads today, like u. and if they do No u are wrong,Gigantor would break his leg off in some "Transformer" azz.
people youtube "styles of beyond - gigantor" i had to look gigantor up from that song i thought it had to be from something, the song is great, sorry if im advertising but you people need to hear it :D
Oh I just got chills watching this. Like many of you I watched this in the afternoon as a child. The theme song brought back memories of being at my Grandparents after school and watching this on the sun porch. 44 years later this clip made it seem like it was just last month.
This and Speed Racer were my all time favorite cartoons!
This show's opening is burned into my brain.. and not because I liked it. I used to stay up late to watch Case Closed on Adult Swim when I was like... 11. They lost the license I guess to air it though, and replaced it with this..... *sigh*.
Great to see this again after 40-some years. Gigantor, 8thMan, Speed Racer, Jonny Quest, Bullwinkle, Popeye, Diver Dan, Clutch Cargo, Thunderbirds, et al., are why growing up in the '60s was the best time. TV got 6 channels then but one never lacked for entertainment. Today you can get 600 with little worth watching.
i love Gigantor with Jimmy Sparks,Dr Bob Brillant, Inpector Blopper and the Bad guys too were neat. But this robot destroy them all long live Gigantor. these kids dont know what they were mi9ssing back then. Today there is no shows that compare to Gigantor,Johnny Quest and many more,
Gigantor was the bomb. I can also remember coming home from elementary school looking foward to watching Gigantor. ccalman, I see we have something in common because this song has stuck out in my head for over 40 years also. I know all of you guys who watched Gigantor have to be between the ages of 45 to 55 right now. never the less, Gigantor and the winchell mahoney hour with knucklehead and jerry were my favorite 1960s cartoons!!!!!!
@77757891 I'm a 51 year old knucklehead and I used to get laughed at by my friends for running home from school to watch Gigantor. The series ran on cable a few years ago and it was funny because it was so corny, but when I was a kid I wanted to be the guy with the controls and kick the shit outta the "evil doers"! That song has been "burnin my brain" for over 40 years....that's a LONG TIME to have a CRAPPY song stuck in your head!
Excellent!! I've been hoping some kind soul would post this with such clarity... thanks to all the other guys, but this posting of this great old TV theme beats all contenders by a mile ~ smile!
@Allhallowsday Didn't they color this toon later? I thought there used to be a color version of this show. I was born in 75 so this was before my days.
@hootyhaha I'm sure it was always color. What you're seeing is an early black and white TV broadcast capture perhaps by video tape or worse, something like kinescope...? I had a very hard time responding to you as YouTube wants us all to link our accounts with Google and change our passwords... I got an email in my yahoo mail today about your question... it's sad they want to block and grab and interfere and divert...
This is my favorite old cartoon opening theme and my favorite part Gigantor the space age robot he's at your command, Gigantor the space age robot his power is in your hands!
Gigantor was the shit when I was in elementary school. All the kids in the neighborhood ran home after school to make sure we catch Gigantor It used to come on right after Mr. Magoo on channel 9. The
creators of the Transformers movie should make a Gigantor movie..THAT WILL BE HOT
@JovonTLC They're resurrecting Green Hornet (who?) and Green Lantern (Who??) when right in front of them is Gigantor! Hell, even Astro Boy got a shot...
@JovonTLC That will be hot? thanks paris hilton, nd they wouldnt make a gigantor film because who the fuck is gunna watch it? A few adults who watched it in there youth? i swear nobody on youtube possesses any marketing intelligence...
@JovonTLC Question would it be wise to release it as Gigantor when Tetsujin 28 has the better opening song. There was a remake with the original names intact too, the only way it would work is if there was 2 versions of the movie with choosable names.
I think that was called "The New Gigantor". Known in Japan as "Taiyo no Shisha: Tetsujin 28 Go." It was actually from the 80s and it was based on the original show.
@akathelegend2007 This was the original I grew up with in the 60's. One of my earliest memories was my father calling my brother & I to breakfast. We just ignored him and kept watching Gigantor. He finally turned the t.v. off and carried both of us to the table kicking and screaming! Man, were we pissed!
i'm 22 and i saw this when i was about 5 or 6 and it will never leave me this show game me my love for all that is mecha :) and my first glimps of anime :) thank you
What does it say in the very first "verse" (I guess you would call it a verse)" It sounds like "Gigantor in the street say roh-hah, hee-than-" and so on...it seems incoherent, making me really want to find out.
Gigantor was created to win World War II, but they couldn't make a working robot fast enough. That's a little fact they omitted from the U.S. version.
While I'm happy for the 52 episodes Mr. Fred Ladd gave us, I wish he'd bought ALL the episodes, no matter how bad the animation or how bad the Americans looked in the early episodes. I'm sure those "lost" episodes are out there somewhere and will eventually come out, so we can all see what the REAL "Gigantor" was really like!
gigantor! as a kid, this was my favorite & the very first japanese anime I ever watched. I think this started the style of animation that japan is known for...
the rap version of this song is fuckin sweet, look up superstars by styles of beyond at the end of the song theres like a minute and a half pause and then the rap version starts
ahahahahahahahahahahahah xD

This was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Fuck the Power Rangers and the Transformers. Gigantor was the original.

Why has no one made a remix of this song yet? >.>

Don't know of any remix either, but Helmet made a kickass cover version back in the 90's.

Behold, Gigantor, the father of the mecha genre!
toradrow777 2 years ago
Really? He was the first giant robot in anime or.. ever?
Dmasterman 2 years ago
Well, he's the oldest one I know of; I could be wrong.

i was searching for something like this but now im really confused it was a show from the 90s that looked like that but with colour lol
akathelegend2007 2 years ago
I think that was called "The New Gigantor". Known in Japan as "Taiyo no Shisha: Tetsujin 28 Go." It was actually from the 80s and it was based on the original show.

@akathelegend2007 This was the original I grew up with in the 60's. One of my earliest memories was my father calling my brother & I to breakfast. We just ignored him and kept watching Gigantor. He finally turned the t.v. off and carried both of us to the table kicking and screaming! Man, were we pissed!

What does it say in the very first "verse" (I guess you would call it a verse)" It sounds like "Gigantor in the street say roh-hah, hee-than-" and so on...it seems incoherent, making me really want to find out.

it goes:
Gigantor, Gigantor, Gigantor.
Gigantor the space aged robot,
He is at your command.
Gigantor the space aged robot,
His power is in your hand.
Bigger than big, taller than tall,
Quicker than quick, stronger than strong.
Ready to fight for right, against wrong.
Gigantor, Gigantor, Gigantor.

About two months ago, Tokyo completed construction of a 59 foot tall Gundam robot that lit up at night.
A week ago, in Kobe, Japan, construction finished on a 59 1/2 foot tall Gigantor robot as well.
So long as scientists in Kyoto aren't experimenting on lizards with large doses of radiation, I think we're ok for now.

I grew up watching Gigantor. Watching the video makes me think that the best part is the opening theme. (well, almost, maybe) Nice catchy Rumba beat.

Gigantor was created to win World War II, but they couldn't make a working robot fast enough. That's a little fact they omitted from the U.S. version.

@reivenlocke

I would watch this when I was a kid and the theme song would freak me out... I don't know why.
It was pretty cool to watch a kid fly a really huge iron robot with a modified toaster though! xD
