back in 1972 , i bought a 45 record at a park n swap, the record was a reissue of sixteen candles, backed with BESIDE YOU, i loved that song and was hooked on doo wop and the voice of Johnny Maestro. may he rest in peace.
Great song. I talked to John out in Long Island at CW Post College. I took a doo wop course and Johnny was there and I talked to him about 20 minutes. He was very real and down to earth.
Aaahhhh...I remembered this gem! Johnny Maestro passed away yesterday....03/24/10. His voice and memory will live on throughout history!!! Thanks again for posting this PJ!
Aaahhhh....I just love JM & the Crests! 5 stars/favs! Definitely a KILLER DOO WOP ballad! I Thank The Moon for KILLER DOO WOP and great people like you PJ to share it with us!
This is considered a typo label (in one of my reference guides anyway) because it's the only record that refers to him as Mastro. You are absolutely correct though. Mastro would be the natural abbreviation.
John Mastrangelo was billed as Johnny Mastro on "Model Girl/We've Got To Tell Them" in 1961 and on "It Must Be Love" also in 1961 (this was a black label with multi-colored COED). In 1960, he was billed as Johnny Masters on "The Great Physician/Say It Isn't So".

This is true.. He was billed as Johnny Mastro on the "autograph" Coed labels.. It Must Be Love, Model Girl and What A Surprise are the ones I've seen with the autograph. Aside from this label, I've only seen one other type set Coed 45 that bills him as Johnny Mastro - In The Still Of The Night.
Typo was probably the wrong word, and I'll update the annotation. I did see this listed as a typo 45 in one of my books which is why I was calling it as such.
Thanks for the educational bit about the label variations, I never knew this, nor have I ever had any Crests' records on Co-ed. You noticed how the Joyce pressing I have has them listed as the Crest's,
The original pressing of I Thank The Moon is the only Coed I've seen that doesn't have thin black stripes inside the title font . It was rather strange looking when I first bought the record, and I still have a hard time getting used to it. It's a really cool oddity.
Luckily for you, this beauty was pressed on 78. It's even rarer than 16 Candles on 78 so it may take a little while to locate.
You have the early pressing of that JoYce 78.. It's a rare and beautiful record.
I just love this music. Too bad the kids today don't have stuff like this. Their sad loss.

I Tweeted this to my friends because the show we're obsessed with has a character named Howard Moon and The Moon is also a character.
Thanks!
Johnny was the man! May he RIP

R.I.P Johnny Maestro. I just found out about you, and GOD has called you home. Thanks, PJ, for the introduction. I love him now, too.

Love this song, and especially like J.T. Carter's bass voice at the very beginning. Looking forward to summer and a full moon in June.

I'm looking forward to June as well, but hoping for a few snowstorms in the interim. Don't yell at me, I like snow lol

Thanks again for the great post; I don't think it was a typo. Wasn't Johnny going from Mastroangelo to Mastro to Maestro?
It was a long time ago and my memory is not as good as it used to be
