for those on a budget: you could pick up a film SLR with a selection real cheap (I even found one in a bin) and get some really high quality pictures. I'm sure that the Canon Eos 400D is capable of getting superb result, and many professional photographers will have got great results with far less.

this camera is actually really gud, i use the same one myself, i only got a single little problem with it, its about the blur in low light or even in normal light without flash, the pictures get really blurry. and the only thing to solve it is to get an IS lens kit (image stablerliser ) which is sold separately, im planning to get on myself pretty, the pictures created from the 400D is really nice, very sharp..thats ONLY if you shoot with flash or using a tripod. hope this helps.. ciao

pixel is an abbreviation: pix (picture) el (element). each pixel is one dot that you have on your computer screen or your digital picture or whatever. for this camera, it is taking pictures with 10.1 million pixels. so the picture is made of 10.1 million little dots. it's hard for me to explain it in english cause i'm german, but i hope it's comprehensible;)

You may want to upgrade the lens too.

The better lenses cost more than the camera easily though.

Lenses I really liked the look of are 50mm 1.4, 70-200 L 2.8, 17-85 IS USM.

The 50mm is affordable just about and ideal for low light situations. It has fantastic reviews. You have to walk back and forth though to frame it exactly like and old camera.

That is because in your 100 dollar (pounds here :)) camera, there isn't a mirror that is constantly in the way of the light path while composing, as you use a separate viewfinder. Some dslr models like the Olympus E-510 have an option to lock up the mirror so you can compose the image on the screen, Disadvantage is autofocus is disabled because the autofocus mechanism on this camera is up where the mirror reflects the light for the viewfinder, so manual only in live preview.

Yeh it does, but to me live display isn't a feature that attracts me to a camera, mainly because I have been using analogue SLR cameras for so long, and I just love watching the image come into focus through the viewfinder. Even better on a medium format SLR :)
