Another song that I love to crank up when I'm driving the Cobra with the top down ! What's even better is when some moron pulls up next to me with that hip-hop crap and I just drown it out.
i remember her being discovered on the Gong Show........absolutely beautiful voice and her octave range is up there with Julie Andrews, Mariah Carey, Yma Sumac....
@snoopatomicdog ...to put it nicely{lol},they sound so similar it's more like a "jack".rap was based on a great majority of soul, funk & disco songs of the early 70s up to the early 80's as well.
She DID have a set of pipes !!!! People say Chaka Kahn and Patti LaBelle were the best, but Cheryl Lynn had a richer vocal quality I thought. Got To Be Real was a big hit record , but Starlove was her greatest song !!!!
OMG, I love this song. However, it reminds me of how OLD I am because I remember when it was being played on the radio. I was driving on the freeway listening to the new station on sirius radio, the new Studio 54 station and suddenly this song came on and I about ran into a hospital parking deck.
Vocally, Donna Summer couldn't hold a candle to Ms. Lynn. I danced to both of them in the late 70's and 80's at clubs on both coasts. Cheryl's singing was bursting with feelings and emotion. Just sit back and listen to her sing " Day After Day " on her Got to Be Real album. Nuff said.
I agree believe it or not Bobby Debarge had a five octave range also. RIP he's a fallen soldier. This song is so fierce. I miss talents like Cheryl Lynn that's missing in the current state of music.
Better than Chaka Khan..She has a five octave vocal range..Only a handful of singers can claim that distinction. It's almost impossible to possess. Cheryl Lynn, Minnie Riperton & Mariah Carey are the only three in recent music history to be able to hit notes in five octaves. Much more versatile than Chaka. Not that I don't like her, but Cheryl blows her away!!
@taralo16 Cheryl Lynn actually looks up to Chaka Khan. Cheryl has an out of this world voice but is in NO way more versatile than Chaka. Have you heard Chaka's catalog of R&B, Funk, Rock, Jazz, Disco, Dance, and Gospel tunes? Better ask somebody...LOL!
Everybody had that ONE song that made you stop whatever it was you were doing in the club and RUN to the dance floor, the moment you heard the opening notes. If you had a drink, you put it down. If you were trying to "close the deal," you grabbed that trick's hand and took them to the floor WITH you. For me, THIS was that song!
I'm remember this song during the disco era. I used to go to Disco 9000 in West Hollywood, The Starwood on Santa Monica, and Osko's on La Cienega, and Dillion's in Westwood. Those were some fun times
Her vocals at 5:33 are the only thing ive seen a popular artist do that comes close to what yma sumac did in chunco with her famous whistle register trills. Cheryl displays awesome technique here.
i absolutely love her rang on this song its hypmotizing...but does this song remind anyone of the song from the movie "prom night" starring jamie leigh curtis. the actual song is called prom night just like the movie check it out let me know if its just my imagination.
i remember dancing to this song at marilyns backstreet in pasadena, boris used to kick total butt at that time and was a trend setter riding a mix on oid school techniks beltdrive tables, yes that was before the 1200 was ever thought of and the ciub had string lights in the floor baggies were in harbor light shoes were thing.thanx for taking the kidd back.
i use to do the splits to this song. o.k. i was 20 something. the bar was the "Bistro" in chicago. met my first lover there. o.k. i was 17, he was 35. what a great time!
This was the first song I ever heard that was disco music. It got me hooked on disco music and I still am. I have been searching for a 1983, 'This Diamond Ring' disco version. Have any of you heard that one? I don't remember who sang it, but it has to be out there some place.
this shit was great.when u hear this kind of music it always make me think of what i was doing wnen the record came out. my daddy used to be playing this while were we ridin in his 1977 grand prix
Okay Cash, this is the REAL Cheryl Lynn, Sherry Turner made this song famous at the old George's on Marshall..........put on your dancing shoes and get ready to twirlllllllllll..............
This IS the BEST DISCO song that was ever performed! Cheryl Lynn you freaking ROCK!!! I danced more to this song than any other song in my life! The minute it started in the clubs, everyone was waiting for me to hit the dance floor and dance my ass off! Can't get enough of this song. BTW, MUST PLAY EXTREMELY LOUD!
@ajb0215 Is that true? Or was that Gloria Gaynor? I mean Cheryl WAS gonna be a big hit. I love her as much today as 1979, when I stood in line to buy this album!
Actually there was no disco version as opossed to a ballad version. This was the one and only original as far as I know. I could be wrong but I had the album.
Sure does bring back some fun dance memories 1979! I ran right out and had to have this album, that Woman stole my heart! I remember hearing she started on the " gong show", no not my Sexy Cheryl, yep it was a fact!
Great way of putting this song!! Ha! It did feel like we were soaring thru the cosmos w/ Cheryl. meet behind Mars, this song and "Zodiac", Roberta Kelly were like that. JoJo58
@LADYSEASTAR awesome comment to such a classic tune...love the 70's disco boogie era also. Nice to see/hear that old school folks still got what it takes. Peace & 1 love
Every Thur. nite for years we went out dancing -and when this song played Everyone helped rock the house down - no matter where we went or what the crowd - Everyone dances to Starlove!
This song gives me the chills. You know its on at 1:16. I was too through at 5:22. The song is full of nice surprises, supoerior arrangement. Everytime you think its going to settle down she gets wild again.
This woman, is EXTREMELY talented, vocally speaking. In my opinion, she ranks right up there, with Patti Labelle & only a "few" select other talents, that had her vocal range & ability. Coming from a singer, as i am one myself, her range is NOT easily reached. More impportantly, performed flawlessly, and without much effort, which to Cheryl Lynn's credit is a massive god-given gift. Her "pipes", are just that damn good folks......!!!!
You are SO right, "tomtalker2000". She is one of the most unrecognized talents EVER!! What a set of pipes she had!! And a vocal range beyond compare. She's up there with the greatest, like Chaka Khan. Just listen to the vocal range she displays here...absolutely amazing!!!!
Yeah Cheyl Lynn is not the only one who's "unrecognized" talents or for that matter who was seriously very underrated that came out that great period for music between the years of 1977-1979:
Evelyn Champaign King
Teena Marie
Betty Wright
Patti Brooks
To be honest, I think Donna Summer pretty much eclipse a lot of these great singers like Cheyl Lynn during that period, because she put out so much material back to back at that time. Plus she had a big marketing machine as well.
Oh yeah! I cant believe it - I heard a version of this in the horror movie "Prom Night" 1980 and loved it never knew it was this!! Great job Cheryl!! and tinocco for postin...
Brings back the memories; my disco partner, Art Parra and I won many a contests dancing this. Also appeared on TV in El Paso, TX. Those were the days.
I absolutely love this song. This song is experiencing a comeback it seems, check out the video response to this. That girl dances the house down to this song.
It really would they have very similar voices, and it doesn't seem that Jennifer is aware of that. I think there is already a great fan base looking for someone to fill the void left by a real belter like Cheryl Lynn. Jenn doesn't seem to have tapped into that yet. She definitely has the vocal power to do so.
i do believe Jennifer could cover the song in a tribute fashion. My friend just worked with Jennifer the other day -I'm going to pitch the idea to her as she's working on her new project. I think Cheryl could guest on the remake.
You ain't kidding. At the clubs here in Chicago, this song and others like it blew the doors clean off of the hinges. How many of today's songs can you say that about?

E L Krackers Charleston Il. That's when I first heard Star Love. Became my all time #1 favorite. Brings back memories of driving from Terre Haute In. with my boys every Fri and Sat. (120 miles roundtrip) Getting in at only 17.
Great voice and beat .Back in the day in Detroit @ Harpos the glass dance floor would be packed when this song was played. If this song doesnt make you want to get up and dance you should get your pulse checked.
Man I feel those vocal's excellent song, reminds me of back in the days partying at Third World nightclub, The Great Gaspy, Hot patoto, Rudy's pasta house in ELA and Circus Circus in Hollywood. We would learn the dancing step's in Hollywood and take it to the Barrio's everyone would watch and learn the step's Hot! Hot! Hot! baby, really had a great time, best time in my life. Thank you so much keep it going.
...Whoo, hooo, wouldn't that be great? ThaankGod, we have our memories of dancin' the night away. We can still do it int he privacy of our homes but the bones creak 'ever'so--o slightly- it'a a Little disturbing, isn't it...? lol
