Shaun works hard, doesn't take steroids and is gracious to other competitors, can't say that about our NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL players!! Shaun wins gold and is an awesome athlete, the US needs more people like Shaun and less Kobe and Tiger Woods! I felt proud watching Shaun on the medal stand in 2010 but i was ashamed of the thugs Lebron, Carmelo and Kobe on the basketball court in 2008! How embarrassing they were jumping around like idiots! Shaun's air guitar was funny and subtle, leave him alon
That was it!?! I hadn't seen the Air guitar thing because I was at school. The way every one was going on about I thought it was some huge horrible thing! That was nothing!!
I thought he was adorable here.I didn't see the harm in this.He was just enjoying the moment. If people didn't know,he was actually learning how to play the anthem on his guitar before the event which is the reason why he did that.I love his free spirit and I don't think he should change or regret what he did here.He just won a gold.He was obviously really excited and as he should be.
Geez guys, lighten up. Shaun said so himself in an interview that it's big being on the olympic team because he's representing the entire country. He knows to be respectful, and he wasn't being disrespectful in this video. Everyone just calm. down.
people who are offended need to check themselves. He was enjoying the moment. Since when did patriotism and love for country and respect become bland and boring and prescribed and conformist? Ok. maybe it always has been , but I'll pass on Sieg Heil and take Air Guitar Anthems any day of the week
~a USAF vet and spouse of a still-serving US serviceman
Anyone who thinks Shaun White was disrespectful for playing the air guitar at the end of the national anthem has something wrong with their brain. Shaun is proud of winning the gold medal for the USA, and the joy of winning a gold medal is a feeling few can imagine. For those idiots who think he was disrespectful, did they happen to notice he had his hand on his heart before and after the air guitar. In my opinion, Shaun White showed respect for the USA in the medal ceremony.
i hate how he's getting so much flack for this... the man was ELATED; he just won an olympic gold medal for Christ's sake!! he's allowed to be happy. in no way what he did was "disrespectful." by doing an air guitar, he was actually showing pride for his country.... people can be so fucking annoying and petty sometimes; like get over it, seriously.
I watched it on NBC and it was the highlight of the night for me. I was serving in the Army when the Hendrix performance at Woodstock was making the rounds. It was a nice tribute to those days. Shaun White's little take was spontaneous, in the moment, and great fun. This has been the most enjoyable Olympics since I was young - less jingoistic, more Olympic spirit, and athletes who are free spirits. That, to me, is real patriotism. They win too.
finally, a U.S. servicemen that doesn't find Shaun's air guitar "disprespectful". It was his subtle homage to Hendrix. I don't know how people can miss that.
@Cyndane -They don't kniow who Hendrix is, that's why. Hell, most people don't even know the lyrics. He is in his elemental character, nothing but expected.
Well, subtle homage... I don't know if today's marketing is very subtle, as opposed to IN YOUR FACE, so yes-- its too bad folks don't follow his patriotic and sensible, respectable style. You dont see SW on TMZ.....
- in the moment and great fun: yes, it was short, and he rolled his tongue behind his cheek, sucking it up a bit, for those who may not have followed that spirit.
I am glad you found these Olympics in spirit, I was there (many vids on BOARDERAMA) and the Medal Ceremonies too--I met & spoke with Shaun's parents after the win. A special event for many, fairly judged.
@SmittyBaGitty The news wouldn't shut up about Obama bowing for a month. Fox News ran with it. What majority-minority planet are you living on?
And in keeping with the Olympics, the news channels kept on after the all black relay team celebrated their victory by jumping around (while carrying the flag) and not being stoic. That story was kept alive by newspapers and magazines for at least half a year.
Funny how people (like you) talk about playing the "black card" but never the "white card."
Bahahaha im shocked i didnt hear anyone complain about this. I thought it would make it onto yahoo's home page for sure. Too funny. I didnt think it was disrespectful, i thought it was hilarious. Especially because there is no guitar in the national anthem hahaha.
Wow, I heard them talking about how disrespectful this was on the radio. From how they were talking I expected much much worse. Nothing wrong with that, guy is just excited.
How is that offensive? He's just havin a little fun with the anthem, no harm in that(: I think he's very proud of his country and meant no disrespect in that
The 2010 Olympic Snowboarding events and all the excitement around it made for an epic showing of talent and USA pride! Thanks for making us feel proud Shaun!!
I heard some "Sports" talk radio show talking bad about this. They are a bunch of jackass's, this Rocked. I would have done the same thing if I landed the toughest trick in the winter games and took home the gold.
@crfranchises1 Not just land it but CREATED it! He is a God, and everyone that is making this a big deal is pathetic! He is the best snowboarder ever! Go Shaun White! You're amazing!♥
