If they miss their target and get the animal in the wrong place, the tranquilizer drugs could cause the cats internal problems. I've heard of many big cats getting kidney disease because of incompetents thinking they're helping them out.

Maybe they should make a rule not to dart an animal when it is in danger of falling or hurting itself in any other way. The vet seemed sure that her cubs would be ok, I would go with his opinion as he works with these cats. The collar wont affect her or her cubs, soon enough she'll get used to it (same way a dog does) and it gives useful information that can help to conserve these beautiful cats.
I was also bothered by the dogs, must have been terrifying for her. Though you must be blinkered to not see that a lot of good can come from this. I think also it was important to get the local people involved and interested the jaguars, changing their attitudes will help to change the jaguars fate, they need to see it as an animal that is important not just a cattle killer to be destroyed.

@EGOdecoder I agree its a shame she was pregnant, but they weren't to know that. Maybe they should make a rule not to dart an animal when it is in danger of falling or hurting itself in any other way. The vet seemed sure that her cubs would be ok, I would go with his opinion as he works with these cats. The collar wont affect her or her cubs, soon enough she'll get used to it (same way a dog does) and it gives useful information that can help to conserve these beautiful cats.

I was also bothered by the dogs, must have been terrifying for her. Though you must be blinkered to not see that a lot of good can come from this. I think also it was important to get the local people involved and interested the jaguars, changing their attitudes will help to change the jaguars fate, they need to see it as an animal that is important not just a cattle killer to be destroyed.

they could have caught her in a bungee. That's being too unprepared to do what they did. Not a great example of a cautious team. Better this than no monitoring at all in a time of growing black market trade and increased encroachment in the species' territory. poachers build a landing strip every year on my land and still they keep appearing so we blow them up again and again. If I find a plane out there one day they'll be leave with the federal soldiers.

Those guys seem to be pretty good scientist. It sounds right to me to drug a pregnant jaguar and let it fall down about 30 or 40 feet. What the hell should happen? And of course it's ok to hurt an animal an probably kill it's cuffs as long as those important measurements prevent the species from dying out.

Can't bear to watch this. Right after they released the hounds, I had to look away. And just began reading comments. Hope what they're doing is helping and not harming, but it doesn't seem very gentle. The stress, trauma, fall and drugs can't be good for the animals, especially the unborn.
