Afghanistan, is being wound down. We want to leave Afghanistan a far better place when we leave. The shadow of Vietnam is a tragedy no one wanted. Millions died in the ensuing months and years. Afghanistan was incapable of, and or not inclined to deal with Al Quaida. There are countries on a list. Many can't wait for freedom to come, which at least means roads and schools. Where basic security and democracy breaks what ever tyranny they live under. I hope they get there.
I have served along side American soldiers, and they are different then the other soldiers in NATO's members. Most soldiers have a "shot back" mentality, while American soldiers tend to be more "shot first" in their mentality. American soldiers are also, for lack of a better term, xenophobic towards anything that's not all 100% American, even when it comes to their allies. The wars would probably be better if they understood how a hearts-and-minds campaign works.
Brutal. Why would any sane civilian be in Fallujah? They were given ample warning to move out. What we also don't know, is what was really happening on the ground. It is impossible to tell whether these people were a mob of fighters. Until evidence is seen to the contrary, eyes on the ground has to be considered... I am not trying to justify this. What if it were Berlin, and those were German civilians with guns would Russia have halted its artillery bombardment?
War is war, people die. The only reason many people in Iraq and Afghanistan die, is because the fucking Taliban use guerilla tactics instead of following the rules of traditional warfare. So basically, they dress as civilians, conceal their weapons until it's time to fight and hide in houses. There are lots of best countries in world. Depends what you look for. USA is not one of them. Even having never served in the military it is obvious that this "crowd of people" are moving in a specific direction in a formation, in a situation where people are fleeing or seeking cover they scatter or have people straggling behind or go in wrong direction. The pilot should have landed on the street, asked them if any of them were insurgents. Then had a lengthy discussion with them to really see if they were ok. Then if all of them were innocent, based on their word, sent the ground troops in with orders to not shoot until they are shot at. But only after getting written confirmation from Al Quieda that the people shooting were insurgents, and not just some one cleaning their gun. British press, a twisted bunch of morons.

How in hell do they know if the JTAC saw the target or not? They have no idea!!! Here's the deal, a JTAC can't call for fire unless he has eyes on the target. Not because it's against regulations (it is but that is not the point), he can't because he has to designate the target with an infrared laser. The pilot doesn't "lock the guidance system on the target", the JTAC designates it, the pilot pushes a button and a GPS guides the bomb to the target. That is the way it works!

I have served along side American soldiers, and they are different then the other soldiers in NATO's members. Most soldiers have a "shot back" mentality, while American soldiers tend to be more "shot first" in their mentality. American soldiers are also, for lack of a better term, xenophobic towards anything that's not all 100% American, even when it comes to their allies. The wars would probably be better if they understood how a hearts-and-minds campaign works.

Brutal. Why would any sane civilian be in Fallujah? They were given ample warning to move out. What we also don't know, is what was really happening on the ground. It is impossible to tell whether these people were a mob of fighters. Until evidence is seen to the contrary, eyes on the ground has to be considered... I am not trying to justify this. What if it were Berlin, and those were German civilians with guns would Russia have halted its artillery bombardment?

The pilot should have landed on the street, asked them if any of them were insurgents. Then had a lengthy discussion with them to really see if they were ok. Then if all of them were innocent, based on their word, sent the ground troops in with orders to not shoot until they are shot at. But only after getting written confirmation from Al Quieda that the people shooting were insurgents, and not just some one cleaning their gun. British press, a twisted bunch of morons.

This video depicts a large group of insurgents in IRAQ en route to a downed Kiowna helicopter that they shot down with an RPG. This was Sep 04, 2004 not April as stated in this video. It involved troops with the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Scout Platoon, and B Company of the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, as they fought off heavy fire in a rescue mission launched after Iraqi insurgents shot down the helicopter and swarmed to capture it and the two pilots. A defensive necessity.

How in hell do they know if the JTAC saw the target or not? They have no idea!!! Here's the deal, a JTAC can't call for fire unless he has eyes on the target. Not because it's against regulations (it is but that is not the point), he can't because he has to designate the target with an infrared laser. The pilot doesn't "lock the guidance system on the target", the JTAC designates it, the pilot pushes a button and a GPS guides the bomb to the target. That is the way it works!
