  • I tried this with my cat and he kept focusing on the food... It took like fifty tries and he still wont do it! ? :(

  • So I notice some cats (including mine) don't like it when people grab their paws what should I do if she won't let me grab her paw??

  • my kitten scratches or bites me whenever i try to do this trick... wat to do?

  • great video but your cats are looking really obese, too many treats me thinks...

  • Omg im so excited that this is possible! Cant wait to start with my kitten :D

  • I taught my cat how to sit in 10 minutes. I did it the same way you teach a dog to sit. Now whenever i hold out my hand and say "sit", he sits, AMAZING!!

  • You don't need treats, just show the cat love and ignore it when it does something wrong. First teach it the meaning of bad and good and you are all set.

  • I just did this and in ten minutes my 4 year old, cranky cat was shaking! This is amazing! Thanks for the video, it worked and the whole family is enjoying the fun.

  • i luv the end LOL

  • Is it necessary for the cat you wanna teach to be a younger cat ? I mean is it working at any age ??

  • smartest cat in the world 10

Check it out !!! OMG !!! Unreal !!!

  • thank thank thank thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuu. your the best. now angy(my cat) can shake hands/paws yess

  • Gosh! 10 year-old cat! So nothing's lost, I could teach my 6 year-old one! :)

  • how long did this take ?? xx

  • Thanks for this great demonstration! I am having a lot of trouble getting my kitty to learn to give me her paw though.

I have been using this method of training her to shake for the past week and she still doesn't seem to be getting it. Now she at least lets me grasp her paw and then I will feed her the treat. I also click too, since clicker training has helped her learn to come, sit, stand, jump and spin. She learned those very fast.

Do you have any other tips for this method? Thanks!

  • what i did was i would let him smell my treat, then i would say "shake" and then take his paw and shake it then give him a treat. after a few days, now if i say to him "shake" and put my hand out he will put his paw in it and let me shake (then expect a treat)

but will only do the handshake if he smells a treat XD

  • can you teach an old cat new tricks? i want to try this on my 7 year old

  • Hi Jomemtum - yes YOU CAN teach an old cat new tricks! :0) The cat in this video was 10 years old when he learned this trick. The important thing is to be patient and gentle.

  • @Kathrine186347 How would you teach your cate to lie down?

  • thanks i'll try it ..

  • my stupid cAT dont get it

  • @MrDannenordin yea but he's cure right? :D

  • I managed to teach my mother's cat to do this. But it's not like a dog, if he decided he doesn't want to shake his paw, then he's just not going to shake his paw.

The other thing is that he sometimes can get a little exited about getting the treat, so the claws come out if you're not quick enough. He doesn't scratch or anything, he just places the paw in your hand with the claws extended.

  • That's a pretty cool process. It really makes use of a cat's natural desire to reach out an touch their food. There's someone on this site with a video of her Egyptian Mau who touches a "staples easy button" to get a treat XD

  • about how long does this process take?

P.S that was soooo cute ^^

  • Can you teach it to sit?

  • I like the last part, when all three of em gave ye a paw hehe

  • thank you very much for this video !

I`m gonna win 100 euros if I succeed in teaching our cat this trick :)

  • that is really cool !! good job

  • Thank you so much!! I've been trying to teach Cheesepuff (My cat) how to shake hands, so she could do it when there are guests! Now I gotta wait for her to come out of the clinic after getting neutered (Believe me, I didn't wanna neuter her!).

  • You did the right thing by neutering your cat gegirl9! There are too many unwanted cats out there. Let me know how your training with cheespuff goes! Will she take a treat from you hand?

  • its called getting spayed wen its a girl, just sos ya now

  • Actually wavelength, neutering is the collective name for males and females, and spaying is the gender-specific term, like you call male and female dogs, dogs, but then you would also call a female in specific a bitch.

  • good name ;DD

  • wow! what kind of treats do you give your cat??

  • He looks just like Dexter, My kitty

  • HES SOO CUTE!!!! i have a solid black kitty, but she's long hair which makes her fluffier then she really is.

  • The secret to cat training is PATIENCE. Most cats don't even like to take treats from you hand at first so start by hand feeding. Then gently touch cats paw before hand feeding. Then gently gras paw etc. Do the trick in small stages and it will work. It is also good because it will make it ez to trim nails later.

  • @Kathrine186347 How about this: teach it right from wrong and it will begin to understand you. f you start feeding it the cat may see it as dominance over the owner- many times leading to misbehavior. Tell me- can you get a cat to go to its bed every single time? How about lay down, sit, stay, stand, jump, come, go bathroom, or eat food without a treat? Probably not- this involves true understanding between cat and owner- something treats cannot accomplish. Best of luck!

  • wow you really done well,

I did try to my kitten but she seems doesn't like when I touch her's paw.

  • Please DO make a clicker training video. You seem to be talented at training.

  • wow thats easy! thanks for the info!

  • nice! how long did it take your cat to learn this? :)

  • The video tape was 12 minutes long and I edited it down to about a minute. He is a very mellow cat and he LOVES those treats. He is very smart but easily distracted. I think most cats are the same. It just took some patience and doing it where there are no noises or distractions. They LOVE giving you their paw once they figure out what it is you want them to do and that there is a yummy treat in it for them. :0). I think they really like the attention too.

  • awesome, can't wait to try that with my cat, would they do the same if there was no treat afterwards?

  • Probably not LOL! :0). Cats are opportunists. They don't do anything unless there is something in it for them....and why should they?

  • Awesome video! Pavlov would be impressed.

  • yay! i have finally found a step by step helpful video for a cat which isnt a couple of months old!!! now...here to find Joey(my cat)...

  • sooo cute! XD

  • He has no idea what is going on.. exceptionally funny. Fat weasil.. I envy cats.. I wish someone would give me treats and pet me..

  • Don't we all! LOL

  • Thanks for the video! :)

  • Is it possible to train a cat to kill people in their sleep? What sort of motivation would one require? Would normal treats do or.. are we talking a rack of lamb?

  • Yeah, leave the cat hungry for too long.

    ;P

  • awesome!!

  • aqwesome i gonna go do that with my caT

  • lols... thats great...!!! lols the little black one was already readu be fore you did the shake thats tooo cute...!!

  • Cats are sooooo much smarter than people think!

  • are they smarter than dogs? (please say yes! lol)

  • In some ways yes, in others, no. There are many different parts of the brain, and in some areas cats trump dogs, in others dogs trump cats.

  • I tried to do that but my cat won't eat what's in my hand =[

  • lol the video at the end when they're all staring at you intently.

  • i'm gonna try and teach my cat to shake

  • This is soooooo cool! I am starting to teach my cat some tricks with the hope that I can bring him to the hospital to make other people happy. I just started today, and I was wondering if anyone had some advice or some websites I could go to? If you do, you can send a message.

  • see my cats think they are the rulers of the house..they wont take orders XD

  • hi im trying your technique and when i give him a treat he eats eat and half way through eating it he puts his paw down is that good? for the eat a give him some pork ^^

  • Love the captions, I am hard of hearing ;)

  • so cute! made me smile!

  • My cat doesn't like to give his paw, why? He moves away and he got like 20 pounds heavier by giving him treats lol.

  • Can you explain whats the reason of training a cat? Cats re self-trained animals/pets.

Dogs re training by people, cats re training people.

Thats what i learned after 20 years living with cats and dogs. I really dont understand why you re doing this. Probably you have no idea about this animal.

  • That is a very strong accusation to make - for all you know she could know a lot more than you! People train cats to form a bond between them - my kitten Jazz was very shy and after working with poritive reinforcement and love to teach her to jump through a hoop, her confidence has soared and we have become so close. It also improves their obedience and trust. I think that perhaps there are some things about cat-human relationships that you have to try out to understand them. :D

  • im teaching my cat right now [=

  • lol ..i thought this was an obama cat campaign,-) yes we can!!!

  • AW i like the last little bit whith all three of them ! Fantastic!

  • I'm going to teach my cat to shake paw too. My cat has learnt how to lie down but she doesn't get up again; lazy cat! Can you make a video on teching cats to open cabinet, use tv remotes and opening doors?

  • Nice you taught all your pets!

  • I just subscribed :D. Thanks for posting these videos!

  • very good video.

I will try this later today.

Thanks for the advice on how to acomplish this :)

  • Nice video! I personally tend to avoid modeling (physical manipulation). I find it encourages passivity - I want active learners - and some cats (and dogs) can react negatively to it. In those cases, targeting or shaping is probably a better idea.

  • I agree Asselange - modeling can be distracting to the animal and isn't always the best technique. I actually used targeting/shaping to teach a cat how to roll over....unfortunately most people do not have the timing or patience for that...but maybe I am underestimating them? I guess I need to make a clicker training video! Thank you for your kind comments on our boy - we think he's lovely too :0)

  • :D Wonderful!! So good to know there are smart, caring pet owners who use patience and rewards instead of the negative ways some owners do things. (hate saying "owner", but for lack of a better word/phrase) Post more, I think you'll get a pretty big following and be teaching with a gentle touch! :D Take Care

  • Thanks for your kind comment Greenleif. I will be posting some positive dog training techniques soon...

  • cool i tried teaching my cat that - shes only 3 months old she got it! ty but ima work on it more , plz tape more ways to teach tricks (search googoo120)

  • that is so cute ill bet he got really full before he learned that trick....very smart cat lol

  • wow, i can't believe you trained him in such a litle amount of time, for dogs though, I prefer to hold the treat in my hand, let them sniff it, and continue to hold it in front of them, eventualy they start to paw at it in attempt to get it, at which point you praise and reward.

  • Hi CrazyCat - yup that works too...but...it can also encourage a 'pushy' dog...who paws at whatever he wants. The technique I use is kinda like

tag teaching' (google it if youre interested - it's cool.. This video was edited down from a 7 minute tape - still pretty quick learning.

  • ya, I actualy tried it with my cat, just for fun. He's 9 and the only "trick" I ever taught him was "kiss" and to come when he's called. It didn't matter how gently I lifted his leg, he just pulled away and then walked off. Eventualy I got him interested again and decided it would be best to start just touching his paw and maybe work up to it.

  • That's the 'pawfect' thing to do :0)you've got the idea for sure! One step at a time and patience patience patience...but they're worth it arent they! Also make sure you've got a really high value treat - I use Whiskas temptations...all the 4 foots love em.

  • lol, that's EXACTLY what I was using, but he seems to think the humility of it isn't worth it, so I was thinking of stepping it up to some balogne or turkey cold cuts.

  • LOL!! I feed the dogs the treats - the cats see me doing this and seem to say 'hey whaddabout me?' Sneaky huh!

  • guy cats seem to be smarter and more trainable than girl cats =/

  • ur cat looks like mine

  • i like both cats and dogs but i like cats a bit more

  • i tried this to my dog yesterday and it worked! He is still a puppy and very hyper and was jumping everywhere when i first did it but he did calm down after a couple of minutes and he got the hang of it. I was so glad i found this! thank you :))))

  • You are very welcome Betty! If you want to learn some more positive effective training techniques check out my website chewberdotcom It is for a dog toy I developed for my hyper crazy dog!:0) you can also view some other videos I've posted here on YouTube if you click on the 'More from this user' tab

What kind of dog do you have?

    Cheers

    The Chewberlady

  • Its a GSP and he will begin training for hunting in october. Is the chewber ok for a GSP? I don't want him to get hard mouth cause he will be hunting in the future.

  • Dogs are pretty smart and can be trained to tell the difference between 'play time' and 'work time'. A great way to stop a dog from tugging inappropriate objects (like dead birds and rabbits) is to solidly teach him the rules of tug! Teaching them a solid 'out' or 'drop' with a toy is great practise for the field and playing fetch is also good for physical conditioning. We have a Weimaraner - very similar to a GSP. He catches frogs from our pond and drops them on command at our feet unhurt.

  • my dog gets mad and tries to bite me...

  • that`s really cool.

  • wow this is cool i didnt think cats were that interactive as most of them spend most of their time out of the house guarding their patch unless its raining or they're hungry/thirsty/sleepy.

  • lol lol lol that was cute

  • that was so cute ^^ i already thought this to my dog

  • if you want a pet with psych issues about food, go ahead and do this. any profesional will tell you to never train a dog or cat with food.

  • I personally know MANY Professional dog trainers and they ALL use food ...I am a member of several Professional Training associations...I am curious tacomablack25... what methods do YOU and the Professional trainers you know use to train cats and dogs?

Do you know what a 'clicker' is?

  • i love that last scene - that is so funny

  • my cat doesn't seem too keen on the treats i get him, do you have any recommendations?

  • I use Whiskas Temptations...both cats LOVE em! The dog will eat anything...

  • LOL omg, same here! (: my cats goes crazy over Whiskias Temptations.

  • Lots and lots of positive feedback.

  • Hahaha that last bit was amazing with the three of them! Good stuff!

  • Gee thanks! We rescued the little grey cat from a feral situation...since teaching him trix he has become soooo much more friendly and social. All three will give 'high 5 and sit up and beg too - its a hoot!

  • wah I should try this on my cat and dog. are you a pet trainer?

  • Why you should try this? If you want to teach your cat or dog something new -then yes - try it! It's fun and They LIKE learning - especially when rewarded for it. Yes I am a trainer. I am an associate member of the CAAPDT .

  • Oh Im sorry I ment to put " woah I should try this" haha sorry about that.

I will definetly teach this to my dog and cat.
