I am overwhelmed with an uncontrollable sense of adoration for Martha right now. She just makes me love the whole world of music so much it gives me the chills, and if someone told me I could study with her, I'd actually pinch myself. Her technique is brilliant. Everything she does is absolutely marvelous, even in her younger years. I shudder at the statement "Beautiful Interpretation" because it is such a gross understatement.

Thanks for posting this video - have heard it on CD many times & always wished I could see what the performance looked like. Like I imagined - electrifying. Her hands move like greased lightning across the keys. There is an electricity between her and the orchestra/conductor - perfectly matched. Horowitz may have been more elegant but Argerich gives the most energetic and dynamic interpretation of this great work than anyone I've ever heard...truly a moment in musical history.
@joeboomer69 Sorry, Argerich is not a product of luck. Thanks should be given to God for bestowing such unearthly talent on her and thanks should be bestowed to Argerich for cultivating and refining such tremendous talent that she was gifted with rather than squandering it. I will and can state this confidently as a fellow pianist.
She is a great artist, and I see no evidence that your imaginary friend god was involved in this production. Genetics, upbringing, hard work, skill, motivation and luck certainly played their part, but god; I don't think so.
I listened to quite a few of her reccordings and I cannot help thinking she sometimes tries to demonstrate some virtuose talent. In that case such a fast tempo is inapropriate and I'd even say she does not respect the phrase of the melody.
@LordDonAngelo No offense, but as a pianist I am sick of people thinking that just because you go faster than average, the pianist is trying to show off!
@ngpiano72 Agreed. Ignorant people. This piece is meant to be fast, and it also depends greatly on the orchestra and how well you can play it. Such pieces are taken with liberties, including timing, as with most contemporary and romantic music. Baroque and classical music however, is extremely specific.
Likelihood this is a true story. She take a flight to hear Horowitz's rendition in New York of RAK3. She was impressed. Later, in Argentina, she read RAK3 with her brother on the second piano for the orchestral part. The page tourner must change two bars before the end of each page. He said to me, "I can not play better this concerto in two years. What a genius". No long time later I see this performance on tv. A miracle?
Ever since I heard herplaying this I cant imagine this movement being played at any other tempo!!!!! it just is right, it fits, its genius! it give it such life and vitality! i cant even descirbe it!
I just finished listening to Olga Kern play this (and reading the "wonderful" youtube fight) and it thought THAT was good. This is absolutely fabulous! Martha has outdone herself again!
I love Chailly's facial expression at 1:50, he's almost laughing.
If you believe in God, whatever name He may be given by your priests and your enemies, you know He endowed Man with poetry, physics, literature, mathematics, music, painting and all earthly arts and sciences to create beauty and reach truth and eternity in heaven and in hell.
And if you don’t, you can still name “God” those talents of the gifted ones. And smile and sigh and laugh and cry.
Why does she play so fast? This is no speed contest, she perfoms it way too fast. I remember a performance with a swiss orchestra where she completely spoilt Tchaïkovsky's first piano concerto.
Thank you so very much!!! Surely one of the greatest musical experiences to be had on YT! A great moment for me is 8:02, at the timp roll, like she's digging the timpanist -- foxy! ;) then those Bill Evans-like jazzy chords with such perfect weighting and expression.......ne plus ultra!!
Inept video, mostly about watching Chailly -who the hell cares what he is doing?- and Argerich's transcendental playing completely minimized, after all, it's not important is it? Almost every single camera shot is embarrassing. The greatest exponent of this concerto since Horowitz is treated to this nonsense?
first off, thats not playing the piano... thats raping the piano :P (in a good way) and the way she moves from those big chaotic chords then those fast runs makes me stop breathing, just so i make sure i can here every single note, definitely a heavenly performanceand i love how she puts her own style and the on Chailly's mesmerized face :P
@Grisostomo06 hmm, martha argerich is proof that if you work hard enough at something and have the necessary resources, you can be brilliant at it, there is nothing about her that proves the existence of a god though, in my view!
@foxyjohnuk Listen to your average good pianist. They are proof that a life of hard work and resources will get you to a certain point. Then listen to Martha Argerich. God gives his gifts to whom He will. The bearer may develop it, squander it, invest it, do what they will, it is up to them; they will be rewarded according to what they have done. And see what Martha has done with her gift. But the one who gives is greater than the recipient, so thanks be to God, not thanks be to Martha. :-)
What she is doing almost seems physically impossible! This is one of the great Rach 3rds, no doubt about it. For me, Argerich is the last great living pianist.
Unfortunately, on youtube so many recordings are bad sound quality. I have listened to Argerich play this at least 20 times. I have also listened to 3 other good pianists play this. In my opinion, she is by far the best I have heard. Her colorings in tone, and accents are awesome. She gives the piece life, that the others don't. Beautiful interpretation Martha!!
@robertslistening I disagree. Her playing is beautiful and I must agree with you there about her playing being full of color, but she is playing all to herself, the orchestra is taking pains to follow and the accents are barely marked. I prefer Ashkenazi. Much clearer, more contrast. Its surprising but common to see someone as gifted as Argerich get carried away.
There will always be people better and worse than you in any endeavor.... that's just the way life is!! Each person has their own strong points, however, and NOBODY is "useless" - that's also the way life is!! You may not be as good a piano player as Martha Aegerich, but that most certainly doesn't make you of lesser value as a person - i'll bet there are plenty of areas of life where you come out on top when compared to most of the "talented folks" whom you wish to be more like.....
Lang Lang gives an interesting performance of the 3rd. When interviewed by CBS 60 minutes, he agreed that this Rachmaninoff concerto drives him crazy, like it has other performers.
Electrifying......this is the best. All aspects are there: emotion, musicality, technique, strength, and what so ever. A tribute to Argerich....... Long live the Queen!
I can finally here more of the notes that Rachmoninoff wrote when I listen to her. Sometimes people play it so fast that you loose some of the essence of what was written. I love how they played this in the movie "Shine" can't find who played that. No it was not David H. that played that in the movie. See the credits at the end. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of that?
I think Martha plays better now, I wish to find another interpretation of her at this days of this concerto... Have you saw her on Prokofiev in the 1998 performance? I mean... She´s almost almighty now... Something like "put the partiture in front of me, I can play it, no matter what it´s", je:P... (Sorry my english)
Argerich is one of the only pianists in the world that does NOT have to play "louder" and "faster" in order to prove her pianistic blilliance.......but she does anyway :)
This isn't too fast, it's just too fast for her. I have no problem with the tempo; I have a problem with the fact that she slows down selectively for certain parts.
I never said faster is better. And yes, some parts I'm sure she can play faster. Across the board, though, this tempo is too fast for her. She slows down in some spots not out of rubato or emotion, BUT BECAUSE SHE IS NOT CAPABLE OF PLAYING THAT FAST. This piece is difficult as hell. There are plenty of times when she lags behind not out of musicality but out of inability.
She carried out more than 97% of this movement PERFECTLY at this tempo. So we can safely say that It suits her just fine. you can consider the remaining 3% to be mistakes if you must (she almost makes none) :D
Hey don't get me wrong, I love Martha too. She is a great pianist. But I'm not talking about "mistakes," I'm talking about her tempo falling behind for a couple of beats at a time. She could have played this a bit more spot on like 10bpm slower or something like that.
i wasn't talking about mistakes either. What i meant to say is that you can consider the tempo fluctuations as mistakes that all other pianists make during their performances.
I don't think there can be a "perfect" performance anyway.
Martha Argerich is one of my favorite pianists alive, but anyone who gave gozhn a thumbs down isn't being realistic. She clearly does slow down once or twice, but that doesn't mean that this isn't still an amazing performance.
@jamietrhcp17 I don't understand all the thumbs down to your comment, nobody's perfect, neither Martha. That doesn't mean the perfomance is bad, it's great, moreover, the subtleties or the variability of the perfomance(not counting errors) is what sometimes makes it interesting, in front of a constant repetition of the same formula or interpretation scheme
I tried to stress as much as I could that I think that Martha is an incredible pianist, yet I still am getting so much negative feedback. I suppose that people just like to believe that because they like somebody, they can do nothing wrong. Once again, I think that Martha is an amazing piano player, and I love this interpretation, but it isn't played technically perfectly. Thank you for agreeing with me.
but are you sure that she does slow down by mistake? isn't it her choice, maybe to underline the passage with more cleanliness? I don't know if I could express what I meant: my english is not so refined...
Somehow i doubt she couldn't keep up with the tempo. She has so many recordings where she completely blazes through much more complicated pieces than what's in this section. This is not overwhelming for her by any stretch.
Wow, amazing performance! And listening to 0:41 ... that theme just totally gets stuck in my head. Awesome to see the emotion in both the conductor and Argerich
...la profonda passione che,si dice, legasse la pianista al direttore ha prodotto questa superba interpretazione di questo concerto di Rachmaninoff, forse la migliore di sempre...
While I appreciate your desire for authenticity, I think it is artists' prerogative to render a work in their own unique ways. If everyone performed a work the way the composer would, then we would end up having renditions resembling each other.
Of course, admittedly, while it is artists' prerogative to render a work however they want, it is the audience's prerogative to like or dislike the them. (which is why we have different opinions about a particular performance :P)
And artists' prerogative? Sure, everyone will have their own interpretations but as a composer I'd feel pretty offended if the players weren't able to follow something as simple as a tempo marking.
I think people (especially in solo works) give too much credit to the musicians- saying how beautifully they conveyed emotions and such. But it's the composer thats created this to begin with and respect ought to be given to them.
She's one natural talent. Too natural and spontaneous for being criticized. We can stay here talking about speed, pedal, and so many other things. But is a reality that there's no one in the word that can be like her. She's unic, determinated, original.. lovely.
I can only dream of having a so great and fantastic woman like teacher.
@HAMBONE0PENOS - don't see how you can possibly say that since horrowitz was rachmaninov's protege, widely accredited to be the best player of rachmaninov music, an incredibly talented pianist technically and in terms of musicianship.
Horowitz was indeed one of the all-time best interpreters of Rach.....perhaps even coming out on top overall: but Martha most certainly gives him a run for his money, especially in such performances as this one!!
The arrogance of people who listen to classical music is astounding. Some people need to find something more worth while to do in this world than criticize folks over innocent remarks they make on Youtube. Embarrassing. Embarrassing and idiotic. Please find something that is more constructive.
This performance is for eternity. Look with how much passion, desire, energy and tenderness Argerich performes Rachmanninoff and how she communicates with the orchestra. Unbeliveable, wonderfull, brilliant!
Listening to Martha play Rachmaninov or Chopin is like listening to Heaven. It takes my breath away and makes me wonder in awe how humans can be so creative. I watch her hands on the keyboard and think of a spider weaving it's web and she is such a spider! Her passion is what sets her apart from the ordinary genius technician in my humble opinion.
The best performance of the Rach 3 I have seen yet, topping the live performance of Leif Ande Ovsnes (Think that's right) a couple of months ago at the barbican.
Is it sexist to say that this is an inspiration to women, considering the huge demand of technical virtuosity and pure passion required to play this piece so spot on?
Also given that Rachmaninoff's hand span can reach a 13th on a standard piano?
The best performance I have seen or heard. Superb.
Liebromeista, Argerich breathes every note. Would YOU please give us "a deeper insight" of this composition? Who YOU are without a vita to comment on this?
Let the man give whatever comment he wants. This is exceptionall well performed, but when you compare it to Kissin and Kern who seem to play it more musically, this one (great though it is) seems a little matter of fact. And I AM an Argerich fan.
mindless banging does NOT equal musical... It really irritated my ears. Much prefer Van Cliburn for this concerto, eventually though he doesn't play as quickly and as loudly...
I am more than sure that you really don't know what are you talking about. With your 20 years you don't have the experience and competence to criticize one of the greatest musicians who is sure of what she performes. Thinking fast like Argerich is not equal to playing "mindless". Become a mature male and go studiying compositions and learn to use your ears, please.
@ Liebromeistal, if you where not to young, I'd like to start an discussion but in your case I can accept what you've declared. I will not ask you what's the meaning of "agressive style" concerning Argerich. Just do some studies and explore and develop benath the art of composition your ears and at least even more your heart.
While "mindless banging" is too harsh, your attack against Liebromeistal is even more so. If you're going to advise him to be mature, make sure you're being mature yourself by respecting others' opinions, not dismissing them solely due to their age. Are you going to dismiss Yundi Li's victory at the Chopin International because he was 18? Age doesn't matter as much as you claim it to matter. Let go of your pompous elitist attitude because you haven't provided anything all too insightful as well.
@Liebromeistal, I noticed that you gave merely destructive comments of Argerich and how she performed Rachmanninoff. I feel more than sure that your face would appear in a red coulour standing face to face to her and beeing unable to show what she'd missed in your very cheap and counterproductive - so called- "opinion". What's your urge to give bad comments on her? Who YOU are? Do you play it more with passion, knowledge on the composition and more matured? Please tell us!
there should be a movie of this women's life, how she burst into the limelight as a youngster, how she was so recluse in her performances, and now how she is gifting the world with all her recent performances. Her musical talent is beyond incredible, I could not imagine a world without her. BTW, meryl streep looks like her and could star as lead in the movie lol
maybe this sounds silly... but I think the orchestra and conductor are used to playing this piece with a less profound soloist... the strings constantly are dragging. She on the otherhand is incredible. Granted my knowledge on this piece is limited, but if taken at this tempo, you must stay more "on top" of the beat.. so to speak..
but notice... the brass (especially) are much closer to her interpretation it seems (though.. I would guess because of the nature of their instruments). Overall, I love her... she constantly anticipates the next section of music which I think propels the music and dramatizes beyond what's actually written on the page.
Martha Argerich is always breath taking in her performance. Damn! Awesome technical skills - unbelievable. This girl doesnt' mess around! I luv her!!! I learned the first movement of the Rach 3 and it totally blew me away. Wasn't ready. So seeing her master this piece is mind blowing.
She has a very direct way of play. This is what is on the score, and this is exactly what I play. Very direct. Many modern performers are more subjective in their approaches.
where is the applauses button? just one thumbs up isn't enough

Uh... It's called rubato for a reason...
TheCrazyHairPianist 2 years ago
What I'm talking about is not rubato. I'd be happy to point out which spots I'm talking about if you're too deaf to hear them for yourself.
gozhn 2 years ago
Are u kidding? Argherich is one of the best pianists out there. Faster tempo is not better quality. She can play it faster if she likes.
SebaRasta 2 years ago
I never said faster is better. And yes, some parts I'm sure she can play faster. Across the board, though, this tempo is too fast for her. She slows down in some spots not out of rubato or emotion, BUT BECAUSE SHE IS NOT CAPABLE OF PLAYING THAT FAST. This piece is difficult as hell. There are plenty of times when she lags behind not out of musicality but out of inability.
gozhn 2 years ago
She carried out more than 97% of this movement PERFECTLY at this tempo. So we can safely say that It suits her just fine. you can consider the remaining 3% to be mistakes if you must (she almost makes none) :D
fionasapple 2 years ago 2
Hey don't get me wrong, I love Martha too. She is a great pianist. But I'm not talking about "mistakes," I'm talking about her tempo falling behind for a couple of beats at a time. She could have played this a bit more spot on like 10bpm slower or something like that.
gozhn 2 years ago
i wasn't talking about mistakes either. What i meant to say is that you can consider the tempo fluctuations as mistakes that all other pianists make during their performances.
I don't think there can be a "perfect" performance anyway.
fionasapple 2 years ago
Can you state precisely where she slows down because she is not able to play that fast ?
rigel48 2 years ago
My God !!!
You're so stupid....!!!
OnurbEniatnof 2 years ago
Martha Argerich is one of my favorite pianists alive, but anyone who gave gozhn a thumbs down isn't being realistic. She clearly does slow down once or twice, but that doesn't mean that this isn't still an amazing performance.
jamietrhcp17 2 years ago
@jamietrhcp17 I don't understand all the thumbs down to your comment, nobody's perfect, neither Martha. That doesn't mean the perfomance is bad, it's great, moreover, the subtleties or the variability of the perfomance(not counting errors) is what sometimes makes it interesting, in front of a constant repetition of the same formula or interpretation scheme
Edside0 2 years ago
I tried to stress as much as I could that I think that Martha is an incredible pianist, yet I still am getting so much negative feedback. I suppose that people just like to believe that because they like somebody, they can do nothing wrong. Once again, I think that Martha is an amazing piano player, and I love this interpretation, but it isn't played technically perfectly. Thank you for agreeing with me.
jamietrhcp17 2 years ago 3
@jamietrhcp17 You're welcome!
Edside0 2 years ago
@jamietrhcp17
but are you sure that she does slow down by mistake? isn't it her choice, maybe to underline the passage with more cleanliness? I don't know if I could express what I meant: my english is not so refined...
;-)
sabsaka 2 years ago
I suppose that could be true, but to my ear she slowed down a bit. I guess it's all just a matter of interpretation.
jamietrhcp17 2 years ago
Somehow i doubt she couldn't keep up with the tempo. She has so many recordings where she completely blazes through much more complicated pieces than what's in this section. This is not overwhelming for her by any stretch.

Very strange performance. Why such rush? And mess with the piano. Is it too modern Rach3 performance or I am too old for such alteration?
I do appreciate her technique, background but it is NOT Rachmaninov (see Rach plays Rach), besides orchestra, I think.
EciekPeciek 2 years ago
While I appreciate your desire for authenticity, I think it is artists' prerogative to render a work in their own unique ways. If everyone performed a work the way the composer would, then we would end up having renditions resembling each other.
Of course, admittedly, while it is artists' prerogative to render a work however they want, it is the audience's prerogative to like or dislike the them. (which is why we have different opinions about a particular performance :P)
pydbl 2 years ago
Indeed My Dear, indeed :P
EciekPeciek 2 years ago
And artists' prerogative? Sure, everyone will have their own interpretations but as a composer I'd feel pretty offended if the players weren't able to follow something as simple as a tempo marking.
I think people (especially in solo works) give too much credit to the musicians- saying how beautifully they conveyed emotions and such. But it's the composer thats created this to begin with and respect ought to be given to them.
Clenella 2 years ago
Why so fast??? Because she CAN. And does it beautifuly. Absolutely phenomenal recording,
Goldenweiser 2 years ago 2
Believe me, she's able to play much faster but this is too fast for this concerto... in my very own opinion of course :)

It doesn't matter that she can play in very very fast tempo or not however this is too fast and make the sound not appealing.

FERMAT0123 2 years ago 5
because she's a great artist, doesn't mean other people aren't allowed to criticize her, or compare her performance with another artist...
Personally I prefer her performance of the 3rd movement instead of eg. Horrowtz's

horowitz sucks shit
HAMBONE0PENOS 2 years ago

kangcason 2 years ago
@HAMBONE0PENOS - don't see how you can possibly say that since horrowitz was rachmaninov's protege, widely accredited to be the best player of rachmaninov music, an incredibly talented pianist technically and in terms of musicianship.
nbambi1990 2 years ago

Her passion is what sets her apart from the ordinary genius technician in my humble opinion.
hiredguns1 2 years ago
Brilliant...just perfect.

1hakon 2 years ago 2
Let the man give whatever comment he wants. This is exceptionall well performed, but when you compare it to Kissin and Kern who seem to play it more musically, this one (great though it is) seems a little matter of fact. And I AM an Argerich fan.
GeorgeMaxwellDuPre 2 years ago 2
mindless banging does NOT equal musical... It really irritated my ears. Much prefer Van Cliburn for this concerto, eventually though he doesn't play as quickly and as loudly...
Liebromeistal 2 years ago
@Liebromeistal
1hakon 2 years ago 2
why can't you just accept that some people don't like Argerich's overly aggressive style of playing?
Liebromeistal 2 years ago
@ Liebromeistal, if you where not to young, I'd like to start an discussion but in your case I can accept what you've declared. I will not ask you what's the meaning of "agressive style" concerning Argerich. Just do some studies and explore and develop benath the art of composition your ears and at least even more your heart.
1hakon 2 years ago
I agree with 1 hakon....i think , that you call / in her case/ passion.......agression.....
I wish we can have more pianists like her in entire world...
Only a few can be mentioned together with her as great pianists of our time ....
krecikgosinka 2 years ago
While "mindless banging" is too harsh, your attack against Liebromeistal is even more so. If you're going to advise him to be mature, make sure you're being mature yourself by respecting others' opinions, not dismissing them solely due to their age. Are you going to dismiss Yundi Li's victory at the Chopin International because he was 18? Age doesn't matter as much as you claim it to matter. Let go of your pompous elitist attitude because you haven't provided anything all too insightful as well.
DrParkMD517 2 years ago
@Liebromeistal, I noticed that you gave merely destructive comments of Argerich and how she performed Rachmanninoff. I feel more than sure that your face would appear in a red coulour standing face to face to her and beeing unable to show what she'd missed in your very cheap and counterproductive - so called- "opinion". What's your urge to give bad comments on her? Who YOU are? Do you play it more with passion, knowledge on the composition and more matured? Please tell us!

this is actually one of the best performances but you don't have to like it of course.

there should be a movie of this women's life, how she burst into the limelight as a youngster, how she was so recluse in her performances, and now how she is gifting the world with all her recent performances. GeorgeMaxwellDuPre 2 years ago
She is playing a little faster than other performances I've heard, at least in the beginning. The orchestra is struggling to keep up with her.
But at some points, she seems to be flying through the measures, though not un-beautifully. I like this interpretation of the music better.
verythoreau 2 years ago
maybe this sounds silly... but I think the orchestra and conductor are used to playing this piece with a less profound soloist... the strings constantly are dragging. She on the otherhand is incredible. Granted my knowledge on this piece is limited, but if taken at this tempo, you must stay more "on top" of the beat.. so to speak..
KingsleyBand 2 years ago 2
but notice... the brass (especially) are much closer to her interpretation it seems (though.. I would guess because of the nature of their instruments). Overall, I love her... she constantly anticipates the next section of music which I think propels the music and dramatizes beyond what's actually written on the page.
KingsleyBand 2 years ago 2
Martha Argerich is always breath taking in her performance. Damn! Awesome technical skills - unbelievable. This girl doesnt' mess around! I luv her!!! I learned the first movement of the Rach 3 and it totally blew me away. Wasn't ready. So seeing her master this piece is mind blowing.
