Actually, he is being consistent and is not talking against the mandate. In the new law there is a CHOICE, not a mandate. Have good insurance or opt to pay a tax for being uninsured. Medicaid is substantially expanded and subsidized by the federal government so it puts very little pressure on the States. Even relatively well off can get affordability subsidies. So the poor don't get poorer but get good insurance at an affordable price.

There is no govt control, there isn't even a public insurance option, just very light regulations. The govt mandated PRIVATE health insurance, and the Obama plan currently enacted, is nearly identical to the republican proposal in the 1990s

Research before you comment. The fees attached to the individual mandates are much different, because they are UNENFORCEABLE. Excerpt: "The penalty [for not purchasing insurance]is not subject to...enforcement. The use of liens and seizures otherwise authorized for collection of taxes does not apply to the collection of this penalty. Non-compliance...is not subject to criminal or civil penalties...and interest does not accrue for failure to pay such assessments in a timely manner."

I think it is smart to learn from your opponents and incorporate the best ideas instead of being 'I'm always right'. I told someone about this last summer. The very mandates that Barack flamed Hillary for in 2008 are now law. They didn't believe me. I'm still wondering why people that were so desperate for health care are going to have to waith 4 years for the coverage in this bill to actually begin. That's going to make some excellent sob stories. I can see it now "Person X dies from X disease while waiting 4 years for Obamacare to kick in."
