  • I've seen better versions of this song. It is a VERY difficult piece, and it was done resonably well, however the tone quality is very off. The men are too much in their head voice in the beginning, the descant near the end sounded strained and screechy, and there was too much sliding. This is just my opinion, but I think if some of those things were done differently, this would be a truly spectacular performance

  • Yes, I would say that it is not the fault of the choir in the case of the missing tenor parts and the mistaken blend of the men, but the positioning of the microphones. I can be sure that this was just excellent live!

  • My Highschool choir is doing this :3 we're still not sure bout that little soprano solo piece yet thoughh he's still deciding :)

  • needs more tennor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @dommousai needs better tenors more likely

  • I love the end!

  • ive heard better

  • Needs more Tenor 1 and then overall a better men blend; because I all I hear is some weird drunk voice; second, basses: "that morning..." that is your special moment!; third tenors: your solo: more energy and together- because when you get to that joshua fit the battle on the high F u do a good job- keep that energy

  • my highschool did a better job in my opinion, and were from kentucky :D

  • @randomfrends14 I bet u did, these guys weren`t so great

  • 1:25 - 1:42 is the best part.

  • they kick azz

  • That gave me goosebumps!!! THAT WAS AMAZING!!! <3

Thats the song im going to state competitions doing!!! :) ON Next Saturday!!!

  • TOTALLY SWEEEET!!

  • we sang this in high-school, why dose it seam do much more intense in this video XD

  • @KananiChara learn how to spell....

  • 1:00 - Mark Zuckerburg! hahaha :)

  • LOVE IT!!

  • WON-DER-FUL!!!

  • Oh my god that was absolutley amazing!!!! <3 I wish my choir was this amazing when we sung it.

  • i love the high note!!(: my high skkool performed it..and i jsut love the high note! (im not in high skool..i just saw them perform) of course i cant sing tht hi!!!

  • this is NOT the most amazing version.... look to the left...find the Moses Hogan Chorale version

  • VERY out of tune through out ....and the blend wasnt great... especially in the tenor feature.....needs to have some soul in it...

  • this version sucked compared to others i've heard.. but its ok, non the less

  • The men...... =.- """"

    The women are superb.

  • some of the guys are really really off. So dissapointing

  • The best version I've heard

  • I do a better descant. ^_^

  • Couple things:

    1) What is with the country twang? Not meant for this piece.

    2) 1:18... hahaha!

    3) The women make this rendition. I'm a bit disappointed with the men :(

  • @DanielleJordan

I dont really see how you said country twang wasnt meant for this piece...... Its music.. Theres nothing that says you cant sing it how you want! :) Not trying to be mean... but This is an amazing version of this song... They all did amazinggg!!!

  • @Sierra0946

This song is a spiritual, not a country piece. Moses Hogan did not write this piece with the intentions of it being sung that way. And besides that, there are certain songs that don't song good with country twang added. Like if someone sang "May It Be" by Enya with a country twist on it... it'd be awful. Just saying, that wasn't the intention.

I still think they sang well. But the girls still out-sang the guys in volume and excellence by MANY miles, in my opinion.

  • @DanielleJordan

I know this is a spiritual song. Music doesnt have a guide to play it, Music comes from the heart, Yeah I know theres different symbols and markings in music, but it all comes from the heart. How do you think Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart came up with there music, It was from there heart. and The people singing are singing from there hearts. And FYI there are some spiritual songs that are also country songs.

  • @DanielleJordan

Well Im not going to agrue about something so dear to my heart. Music is my life, and it not something that has to be play a certain way. There is no rule book that says you have to play music a certain way! The way they did this piece was amazing, and it doesnt matter what, anyone or I say about it! So have a wonderful day!:) God bless you!

  • @Sierra0946 That's debatable. All I have to say.

  • @DanielleJordan I know! I am a tenor and if I had the chance to sing this, oh my I would put all my effort into this. I love this song.

  • @hannahbrandon1 I'm sure you'd do great! I had great tenors in my choir who rocked this song :)

  • @DanielleJordan the song is a gospel it's ment to have a little something in there it doesnt have to be perfect so the country twang kinda worked i think :)

  • this is the most amazing version I have heard. oh my goodness. this choir is amazing!

  • I sang this in our a capella chior as well, you guys sound great! accents though, they are very important!! we took it much faster, though.

    Wonderful!

  • I sang this song in my aCapella choir and can i just say you guys blend incredibly! wow amazing!

  • i love this song its so good Westlake Choir did this song and it was awesome

  • i remember my choir singing this! we did the ending different though.

    awesome choir! love the song!

  • Joshua was cool

  • Hiya,

It's a recording taken off the TV so unfortunatel;y most of the bass sound is lost, and a lot of the middle harmonies are heavily compressed - the radio broadcast was a whole lot better!

    All best

Jim - the conductor int he clip!

  • i think our high school freshan choir is doing this song for our spring concert

  • oh shut up cud u do any better (lameemo) no! thought so, they're amazing!"

  • I sang against them in that same competition with the inverclyde schools junior choir, this choir was absolutely fantastic and fully deserved the overall title xx

  • Wow. What a bright Chorus. Their tone was simply awful. Especially the tenors on "And the walls come a tumbling down" right before the Soprano's C solo ( which was late, mind you).

Altogether, the effect was achieved, but there were some problems.

  • Two words: LOVE IT.

  • Terrific. I was looking for ideas for the choir I run in France, but this is way beyond their means. Brought tears to my eyes. Well done guys.

  • Thanks FoulQ

  • ...Not the best choir I've heard. Okay job

  • the version i know goes

    thunder and lighting

    oh so very frightning

yes there was thunder and lighting strickin all around

    there was creepin and cryin

    ther was no denieing

that the walls of sherico they were a tummbelin down

when Jashua faced the battle of sherrico

sherrico sherricoooo Joshua faced the battle of shericoo and the walls a came a tummbeling down... and some more

    sorz bout the speeling

  • ALFRED'S PIANO SERIES FUCK YEAH BRO

  • Ahh....last note was flat.

  • I do think this is a very beautiful song;;

    and I am in LaVergne High School Choraliers; we are taking this song to festival with us. It should be wonderful;

There are just some parts in here that are awful; and I'm sorry. But especially how they say "baddle." Your vowels and consanants should be evenly acknowledged. Thanks; and nice job(:

  • i strongly disagree on what you said about "baddle". This piece represents fighting and gore and what not . And if you say every consonant it would sound very geeky. Not to be racist but it has to have an African American vibe going on. And if you say the "T" in Battle it just sounds really bad. I have experimented with this on my choir.

  • Hiya,

Just in case it's of interest, the Moses Hogan Choir (whose arrangement this is) sing battle (not baddle). I'd have made the same choice as you my friend, but then realised that I wasn't making an authentic choice.

    Hope that helps?

    All best

Jim - the conductor in the clip!

  • IDIOT It's supposed to soudn like that, MORON. Smalljoe understands.

  • 0:48 is not choppy enough it is supposed to be

    Jer-i-cho

  • From 1:22 to 1:24 was just horible.

  • totaly agree there

"an da wells came com tublin danw"

    kinda sloppy

  • the guy that creeps me out is at 0:06 on the right

  • hahahaha i read ur comment then saw him.

  • Our choir is singing this right now, and performing at Carnegie Hall next spring. I hope we take this one with us... its beautiful..

  • i think if you contextualize the piece as an afro-american spiritual..... baddle makes more sense than battle...

  • cuz the tale of the israelites taking over the holy city is an afro-american spiritual...right

  • fucking idiot you don't know anything about choir. So a poem written by an englishman can't be about somebody from India well fuck you dude you suck cock

  • Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait.

Where the FUCK did Indians come into play?

  • Hiya,

We did think about which it should be before opting for Battle (with 'tt' rather than 'dd') because I found a recording of the Moses Hogan Choir singing it (this arrangement was by the late Moses Hogan) and they sing a very clear (infact almost wet) 't' sound.

    Hope that helps

Jim - The conductor int he clip...

  • regin

  • dope song, but they're saying "baddle" instead of battle =/

  • same to you mothafucking idiot ITS SUPPOSED TO BE ARE YOU BATSHIT RETADRDED?

  • First of all, dope is a compliment, and there was nothing intelligent you added to the previous statement.

  • you're a bit rude now, aren't you?

and yes, dope is a compliment. are you angry? well, you should try calming down because otherwise, you leave stupid comments on people's videos =/

  • The man at 0:44-0:49 creeps me out.

  • Singing this tonight @ our chorale concert

  • this is amazing!

singing this at our school's chorus concert tomorrow night!

  • Absolutely fabulous.

The only way it can be improved (in my opinion) if more uniform vowels. They'd get an even more mature and pleasing sound if they all payed attention to what shape their mouth is making.

  • I agree

  • I sang this in district honor choir when I was high school. great piece to sing.

  • does anyone know the top note the female soloist sings?

    thanks =)

  • hi C

    C6

  • thanks :3

  • they look so angry

  • Well it is a battle isn't it?

  • Woooo! Brings back memories!

  • Great Performance! The recording is a little distorted, but you tell this is a great choir. No wonder they won!

  • Wow, the men are very very out of tune

  • Haha yea alot like just one guy messin it all up

  • horribly

  • you are very right! ugh its horrible

  • That's how it goes. I've sang this before. The guys part is a little bit wonky. At a few points it sounds like the audio goes a bit off due to low quality.

  • mmm that was pretty painful.

  • ive heard way better, but this was pretty good

  • Really? Is it on Youtube? This one is pretty much as flawless as this arrangement gets. I've heard the demo tape that comes with the musical, and as I recall, it doesn't sound much different if at all.

  • Comment removed

  • watch?v=Ks7fLAwzVxY&NR=1

Ok, I take it back. Here above is the FLAWLESS performance of this particular arrangement. I doubt it gets any better.

And anyone who said this version is horrible must just not like this type of music.

  • very good! Who's the conduct?

  • James Davey is the conductor.

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • Thanks.

  • WOW!!!!!!!! No coments. ¿Some body know who´s the arranger of theese beautiful song?

  • arr. by Moses Hogan

  • another comment..... 1:14 "hands" is off.....about 1:23 they slurred TOO much... and 1:45 they sounded like they were lassoing with their words.... and moses hogan wanted the T's by the men and the S's by the women to be articulated. I hear hardly any T's from the men. wtf. Our high school choir is doing this piece this year and we could sing it better.

  • Comment removed

  • it is good but i personally think that the northville choir does a better version of this song...

  • OMG THAT WAS AWESOMEEEEE!! :D

  • that is one of the greatest versions of this epic song !!!! love it

  • I think that the vowels need to be neutralized a little more. It sounds distinctly regionalized.

  • i really didnt think that was a very good version of this song. It seemed to be a little sloppy to me

  • i concur.

  • ahhhhhh, the female solo.

    that was AMAZING.

and god i love how they blend so well together

i listening to the verison and i JIZZED IN MY PANTS

  • That boy know he is DIRECTIN' that song!!

  • This is choir is amazing. This is the best version i have heard except the one by The Nathaniel Dett Chorale. They are a little better. I wish to have a chorus that sings that good with I become a chorus conductor! Keep up the good work.

  • Moses Hogan is boss!

  • Best version i have heard :)

  • i love how well the girls blend together

  • Oh my Lord, the intensity in these singers is AMAZING!!!!! Our choir doesn't have any. THATS AWESOME!

  • CLASS!!!

  • Ah! James Davey! He's conducted me before!

    Win.

  • the basses aren't emphasizing the T in battle enough

  • in Moses Hogan's arrangement, the T's aren't supposed to be emphasized as much.

  • when i performed this, i was told the same thing. so, i agree.

  • yup it's somewhere between a dental t and a pronounced t

  • they actually are if you haven't heard his latest interview. all of Moses' hogan's pieces are based on emphasis

  • eh the basses coulda been a bit stronger the sapranos were ok, and the tenors had some nice spots.. it was ok i guess.. ehh

  • Terrific dynamics! I love the intrepretation! The soprano solo's entrance was a little flat but I just love this song. Fantastic job!

  • there was talk of pitch issues at the end, i wanted to say that the soprano's on their slide up are like a semi tone flat, but they resolve it fine, so i don't know if that is intensional or not, but sounds good. you should listen to my choir sing it for some reference! montclair state university singers! great job guys, great job soprano soloist on the descant!

  • the guys have great expression. :)

  • i sang the high note in my hs choir. so fun!

  • REALLY GOOD

  • i'm singing this, this year

  • dude... I love it. Moses Hogan R.I.P.

  • I absolutely love this version. It's awesome! Gives me chills.

  • I would've prefered a voice with a bit more force to do the soprano Obligato(sp?), but, overall, probably the BEST version I've heard of this version. Really, amazing.

  • That Bass II kicks some major ass...

  • Is that a male alto?! YES.

This is fantastic. I'm now performing this for the second time in a choir... Moses Hogan is pure genius.

  • dude... my ninth grade choir is singing this at school...

  • I sang this at school

  • Best version i have heard :)

  • Hey! James Davey!

He conducted on one of my TC courses =D

  • yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    y la conchetumare

  • Well, compared to the other garbage out there this is the best version I have heard thus far.

  • This may well be the ON OF THE best performances of this song I have ever heard (and I have heard MANY).

  • vibrato aside....

    the rhythm.........

(a major staple of this song)...

    is almost dead on......

  • I LOVE the vibrato. I think it makes it sound really cool :D

  • i hate it when they use loads of vibrato because you can't tell what chords are being sung, and i love the half diminished chords in this piece and you really can't hear them in this interpretations

  • the choir in my school sang this but they only did the girls part..:S

  • this is a nice piece i love IT!!!!

  • Where are the tenors?!

  • Very good up until the descant. It's so FLAT.

  • No, it is not. Sounded right on pitch to me and the othe 10 people that I have played it for, all of wich have degrees in music, as I do.........

  • i love this song. But my jr.high can sing this song better than they can.

  • yeah my youth choir sings this better than this choir. this choir uses far too much vibrato, and you just CAN'T use vibrato when singing choral music!

  • I agree.

  • it`s really amazing!!!!

  • UGH!!! Wheres the "T" in battle!!! That sounds horrible!! My high school can sing this SOOOOOOoooo much better!!

  • That's the whole point - spirituals are often sung without glottlas. Eg Ba'le, tumbli'

  • REALLY great intonation but i have to be honest, i hate what they did with the sliding and all... ugggh and the lack of a 't' in battle.. i know it's all for effect and i suppose they were successful in what they were trying to do but looord. i'm doing this piece right now and perhaps i'm j ust narrow minded, but i think this choir could have done better (they certainly have the talent!)

  • i love the tenor part

    in this song. its great.

  • I love Moses Hogans' arrangements

  • Well I Thought They were really good as I was The There At The Time They Sang As I Was In A Cometing Choir !

  • Do You Speak in Book Titles or is There Just Some Glitch on Your Computer that Automatically Capitalizes the First Letter of Each Word?

  • hehehe

  • bad cord on tumble at the end.. other than that and the dynamics it was really good!!!

  • with all due respect.... you're wrong ^_^.

    the last tumble was wunnaful

  • this doesnt show ANYTHING like what it was really like! i was there and it was INCREDIBLE.. this doesnt make it seem anything like as AMAZING as it was when you're watching it right there live

  • Nothing ever is. am i right?

  • TUBAPLAYER you obviously have never read this piece. Yes she was supposed to slide. Its a good preformance they brought the intensity of the song and they actually did it in the right time signature. The mens voices are very prominant. I cant wait to preform this piece i think its amazing. Even being a soprano 2.=]

  • i like it a lot!

    =P

  • I think that the style of this interpretation is far too classical! It needs to be a lot more free!

  • diction?

  • wow.... it was full of life.. but the soloists.... err.... -no comment- but overall it was ok... i've seen better though ;) keep on working on it!

  • i acctually did not like this at all. The saprano one soloist was horrible. i dont know if she was taught or told to slide up to that high note but it took to long to get in tune and made my spine cringe! I love the fact that you can see how much punch and diction they are putting in to the words.

(and were there guys singing on the girls parts? i've sung this song many times and i know when the guys cut out yet there were people in tux's singing....confuses me)

  • Yeah they had a couple of countertenors, so some guys singing alto.

  • Wow, this choral group has the makings of a great world champion someday. I'd love to see this group pair up or go up against the best choral group in the world today, the PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS grand prize winner of the 1997 and 2007 European Grand Prix. God bless you guys!
